A weird black ring appeared in the sky in England and then disappeared

This is bizarre. A 16-year-old girl saw a giant black ring in the sky above England and captured it on video. After three minutes of floating around like a cloud, the black ring disappeared completely. So far, experts have no idea what it was.

I wish stars really left these mesmerizing star trails in the night sky

It’s not fair. Time lapses and fancy cameras get these fantastic images of star trails that paint a starry night onto the sky and yet when we look up, we see nothing. Even when the stars are glistening, we don’t get to see the mesmerizing hook of its trail spinning around us. Wouldn’t it be awesome if night looked like this?

Sky Is Sole UK Provider For Game Of Thrones Until 2020

sky-hbo-2020Whenever someone happens to be a sole provider or owns exclusive rights to something, you know for sure that such a company or party would have rather extensive clout in the marketplace, and would more often than not be rolling in plenty of money. I guess you can more or less say that Sky has netted a coup after expanding their partnership with HBO. This means that shows such as ‘Game of Thrones’ alongside other HBO shows will be offered by Sky in the UK – and Sky alone, at least until the year 2020 rolls around.

The incredibly huge size of Andromeda next to the Moon

This is how the Great Spiral Galaxy of Andromeda would look in the sky if it were bright enough. Sadly, its light is too faint. But imagine seeing that every night. Would you get tired of it? I know I wouldn’t.

Xbox One owners report compatibility problems with UK TV providers

Nothing tests a stiff upper lip like a next-gen console launch. Having already been spooked by inaccurate pricing on the PlayStation Network, some Brits are now discovering that the Xbox One‘s heavily promoted TV functions aren’t readily compatible with their set-top boxes. Whether on Freeview, Virgin or Sky, users’ efforts to route TV output through the Xbox One’s HDMI passthrough port are apparently resulting in “juddery” and unwatchable video — perhaps because the Xbox One defaults to 60 frames per second while most UK hardware sticks to the PAL standard of 50Hz. In turn, if they’re forced to give on using passthrough, they also have to miss out on the use of Kinect voice control to start watching TV, change the volume or “snap” TV side-by-side with an app.

Ironically, one UK service that has made a particular point of never supporting the Xbox One — namely, YouView — may now offer the smoothest experience of the lot (albeit without any EPG integration), as its box seems to be more comfortable outputting a compatible signal. That won’t be much help to others, however, so we’ve asked Microsoft’s PR if there’s any progress towards a fix, and in the meantime you might want to try a possible workaround from a reader at HDTVTest.

Sky Go boosts its TV lineup with 14 new channels

    Sky Go Extra

Sky’s mission to boost its roster of mobile TV content has today seen it add no fewer than 14 new entertainment channels to its Sky Go streaming service. Available on iOS and a number of Android devices, Sky Go now counts a total of 57 channels after Comedy Central, MTV, Dave, Watch, Gold, Discovery, Nat Geo, History, Alibi, Nat Geo Wild, TLC, Animal Planet, Good Food and Eden all went live earlier today. It comes just weeks after the company expanded Now TV with the launch of its contract-free Entertainment Month Pass, which moved to overlap content with the sister service. In addition to the new channels, Sky Go users can access the box-set catalog of older ABC TV on-demand shows, letting you binge-watch Grey’s Anatomy a-la-Netflix when you’re out and about.

Sky+ receiver upgrade brings as-you-type TV search with unified results

Sky upgrade brings unified, asyoutype show searches

Sky+ viewers have had advanced search through the TV service’s mobile app for a while. Starting today, they’ll get that experience through their set-top boxes. Sky is rolling out an update to Sky+HD receivers that introduces as-you-type search, with unified results that include both live and on-demand shows. The upgrade will take a few months to reach all subscribers, but the days of slow searches may soon be at an end.

Sky adds ‘The Wire’ and other high-profile TV box-sets to its VOD collection

Sky adds 'The Wire' and other highprofile TV boxsets to its VOD collection

With the news that Netflix is being brought to Virgin Media’s TiVo boxes, Sky needs to cook up some sort of response. That’s why the broadcaster has thrown some money around to offer those premium US dramas everyone raved about before Breaking Bad (The Wire, The Sopranos and Mad Men). If you own a Sky+HD box and use Sky Go, you can now binge down on those shows, plus offerings like Seinfeld and Boardwalk Empire. The new collections will be added from tomorrow, nestled alongside existing domestic fare like I’m Alan Partridge and The Inbetweeners. At the same time, Sky has let slip that more channels will be coming to its Catch-Up TV service including Discovery, Star, Watch, G.O.L.D. and E! — hopefully meaning we’ll never again miss an episode of The Soup ever again.
