Microsoft lands NFL partnerships for Xbox One and the football field (video)

Microsoft lands NFL partnership

Microsoft is clearly determined to sew up some of the best content for the Xbox One: it just revealed a special, multi-year partnership with the NFL. The two are working on an optimized experience that better integrates fantasy football, including score displays, onscreen updates and Skype. They also promise exclusive content, naturally, including a lock on translating many of these experiences to tablets. The partnership will extend to the real arenas, too — among other technologies, Microsoft will bring Surface tablets to coaches and players to improve their communication and play calling. There aren’t many more details so far, but it’s evident that Microsoft wants to cater to football fans with a lot more than just its existing ESPN app.

Microsoft announces Skype integration for Xbox One, leverages Kinect enhancements

It may have taken two years and a new console generation, but Microsoft is finally making good on an old promise: Skype is coming to Xbox. Microsoft has been planning to port the internet telephony service to its home console since it purchased Skype back in 2011, but it never surfaced on the Xbox 360. Now, the service is poised to make the most of the next generation, leveraging the refreshed Kinect and voice enhancements for a higher-quality experience than its predecessor was capable of. Gamers can receive calls even while watching movies, and they can open them up side-by-side other apps in Snap Mode. Naturally, Skype can be controlled via voice, with commands to shut off the mic or camera, end the call and go full screen. Group video chat is also available, but it’s still not clear just how many folks can be looped in.

Skype arrives on BlackBerry Z10 as 10.1 update is on the way

Today, Skype has announced that its popular video calling service is available as a preview for BlackBerry Z10 users. The app first rolled out onto BlackBerry Q10 devices last month as a preview, and now the Z10 is getting it’s moment of video-chat glory. However, it seems a lot of the features in the app requires the BlackBerry 10.1 update, which will begin rolling out later this month.

slide1

The app includes all of the same features that you’ll find on other platforms with Skype running on them, but on the BlackBerry Z10, the Skype app seamlessly integrates with the phone book and BlackBerry Hub, making it the process a bit easier to make a video call to a friend or family member.

The app is available now to download from BlackBerry World, but unless you have the new BlackBerry 10.1 update, you won’t be able to download the free app, which is a little puzzling at this point, but it seems Skype simply wants to get the app out there beforehand, so that it’s ready once the first batch of 10.1 updates starts rolling out to users. The 10.1 update will mostly come with tweaks and performance enhancements to the OS, but there will also be a few new features, such as an HDR mode for the camera, PIN-to-PIN messaging and email, as well as improvements to notifications.

Skype reiterates that this is simply a preview version of the app, so there may be bugs and there may be some features that will be taken away or added by the time the final version releases. The company said that they’ll be working closely with BlackBerry over the next few months on the app, to make sure it’s up to standards.

Along with the release of Skype for the BlackBerry Z10, BlackBerry also announced this morning that there now 120,000 apps in BlackBerry World. The company also announced the new BlackBerry Q5 QWERTY smartphone that will release later this year in emerging markets across the world. It’s essentially the cheaper brother of the Q10, but still comes with the 3.1-inch touchscreen and the full physical keyboard, along with BlackBerry 10 running the software show.

Comcast reportedly axing Skype on Xfinity June 1st

Comcast reportedly axing Skype on Xfinity from June 1st

Well, Comcast’s idea to charge users $10 a month for set-top Skype hardware went as well as you could have expected. If DSLReports’ sources are correct, the offering will be quietly retired on June 1st due to, surprise surprise, “low adoption.” If you were one of the few triple-play customers who ponied up for the gear, fear not, as the leaked internal e-mail says that existing users will continue to be supported. Given that you can snag subscription-free gear from Logitech, Biscotti and others, it’s no surprise to see Skype on Xfinity joining Cisco’s Umi on the island of misfit telepresence devices.

Video Messaging Comes To Skype For Windows 8

Video Messaging Comes To Skype For Windows 8

Skype has been on a roll recently. They are making a lot of improvements to the service in order to make it easier for users to connect with people that they need to. Just last week, Skype was integrated with Outlook.com, allowing users to make calls directly from their email inbox. This integration with Outlook.com is due to the fact that Microsoft now owns Skype. Recently the video messaging feature was added to Skype’s desktop application for Windows, today an update brings the same feature to the Skype app for Windows 8. The Windows desktop version which brought this feature to PCs running Windows 7 or higher is actually the latest beta build of Skype, whereas the Windows 8 app is the consumer build.

The service has been testing this particular feature on a number of platforms such as iOS and Android, and is now available in preview form for them. Its very easy to send a video message through the app. Simply click on the + located under a contact’s picture and there’ll be an option to send them a video message. Once it is recorded and sent, it will be visible in that contact’s chat feed. The update app can now be downloaded from Windows Store.
