Microsoft launches four-year, $80 Office 365 University subscription for students

DNP Microsoft launches $80 Office 365 University fouryear subscription for highereducation students

Microsoft’s given Xbox love to PC-buying students recently, and it’s just announced that it’ll carry on that tradition with Office 365 University, by offering a special four-year, $80 subscription to higher-education students. For that sum, you’ll get four years of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher and Access if you’re seeking a sheepskin scroll, which Redmond says works out to $1.67 per month. Also included are 60 Skype world minutes per month and 27GB of Premium SkyDrive storage, along with free upgrades and the ability to install on two separate computers, to boot. That should take some of the sting out of those scholarly expenses if you need a copy, so check the source to see how to grab it.

Skype hits 280 million plus user mark

The giant that is Skype continues moving forward without showing any signs of slowing down, where some say that this is a good thing. After getting acquired by Microsoft, Skype continued to claim new users that number in the millions, and Microsoft has revealed that the VoIP software that they own has now crossed the 280 million users threshold. Of course, it did take some poring through Microsoft’s first quarter fiscal 2013 earnings report to arrive at this figure, where Microsoft claims that Skype saw their user base swell by over 30 million users since late May.

As we all well know, having a large amount of users does not necessarily translate to a huge earnings base, and Microsoft did not reveal the amount of revenue generated by Skype in their earnings report, although they did mention that 120 billion minutes of Skype calls were included in the quarter, which represented a year-over-year increase of 58%. Are you still rocking on to Skype even today, or have you moved on to other VoIP software?

Logitech announces $200 Broadcaster WiFi webcam for iPhone, iPad and Mac (video)

DNP Logitech announces Broadcaster webcam for Mac with live streaming, multiangle talents

After trying (and failing) to surreptitiously shepherd it through the FCC, then seeing it leak out anyway, Logitech has formally outed the HD WiFi Broadcaster webcam. The 720P shooter (not 1080p as we hoped) allows wireless transmission from 50 feet away to any Mac computer, iPhone or iPad, instant broadcasting on Ustream and the ability to toggle between your device or computer’s built in camera with a button push. The hard plastic carrying case with a magnetic lid doubles as a stand to elevate the cam, which Logitech says will “play nicely” with apps like iMovie, Final Cut Pro and FaceTime. Broadcaster is already up for preorder for $200 in the US and 180 in Europe, so if you want to show that you’re doubly beautiful with a multi-cam Skype call, the PR and video are after the break.

ForcePhone from Nokia Research, HIIT sends positive vibes with a squeeze

ForcePhone from Nokia, HIIT sends positive vibes with a squeeze

Most device vibration technology is used as pure feedback — either confirmation that you’ve pressed something or that you’ve come across an obstacle. If a prototype developed by Nokia Research and the Helsinki Institute of Information Technology ever translates to production, however, it’ll be as much a part of personal phone conversations as a soft voice or a cheeky text message. The modified N900 attaches a resistor that responds to a squeeze at four different pressure levels, and doles that out during a traditional or Skype-based call as a vibration on the other end. As you’d imagine, the aim is to give family, friends and lovers the closest they’ll get to a hug (or the occasional frustration) when the distance is just too great for an in-person visit. Don’t hold your breath for an extra-lovable Lumia anytime soon: there’s no mention of any near-term production plans, and any adoption would require a platform switch just to get started. But if we ever see “reach out and touch someone” become a lot more than a slogan, we’ll know where it came from.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 9, 2012

Welcome to Tuesday evening, everyone. Earlier today, we found out that Samsung may be planning a Nexus 10 tablet, complete with a resolution to give the third-gen iPad a run for its money. ZTE gave its response to yesterday’s allegations that it may be helping the Chinese government spy on the US, and Apple started shipping the fifth-generation iPod Touch to the first customers today. We heard that the rumored 32GB Nexus 7 variant might be replacing the 16GB model, and speaking of the Nexus 7, it received Android 4.1.2 today, which adds a much-needed landscape mode.

NASA’s Curiosity rover has scooped up its first “handful” of Martian soil, while Verizon announced today that it will have 4G LTE in 418 US markets by the end of the day on October 16. Not only did Samsung announce the Galaxy Music smartphone today, but it also started teasing a “groundbreaking” Windows 8 device reveal for October 15. Microsoft has released a Windows 8 update ahead of its launch at the end of this month, while we heard that Windows Phone 8 pre-orders might open up on October 21.

Despite Apple’s best efforts, its Lightning chip has been cloned, and today the company was said to be in a long-running relationship with a carbon fiber manufacturer. We got to take a look at some snazzy new iPad Mini renders today, and were told that BlackBerry 10 might not launch until sometime in March 2013. Today was the day that Felix Baumgartner was supposed to attempt his record-breaking skydive, but at the last minute Red Bull had to pull the plug on the mission due to bad weather, with tomorrow’s jump called off for the same reason. Firefox 16 was released today, and Amazon filed a new patent for an online haggling system.

Ice Cream Sandwich finally hit the Motorola Atrix 2 today, while Jelly Bean was arriving on Galaxy S IIIs in Korea. Tens of thousands of Chrome users have fallen victim to a bogus adware app claiming to be Rovio’s Bad Piggies, and Valve has invited players to fill out playtest surveys for a chance to come into the studio to test new games and hardware. Gearbox released the Mechromancer DLC for Borderlands 2 a week early today, and the Humble Bundle is back, only this time it doesn’t feature any games. Skype users are being plagued by a trojan, so if you use the service a lot, it’s probably a good idea to check out our post to see what you can do to stop it from infecting your computer.

Finally tonight, we have a pair of original posts for your to read through. Chris Davies tells us why a Nexus 10 won’t solve Google’s problem with getting developers to make apps aimed at Android tablets, while Chris Burns has given us a review of the Acer TravelMate P243 notebook. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Skype ‘worm’ malware infects Windows PCs

Skype logoToday would be the day where Mac users are able to poke fun at Windows users, as Skype, the VoIP software of choice for many, is the platform that hackers used to distribute a “worm” which will infect only Windows-powered computers. How do you know that this is a “worm” and not a legit question from a friend? Remember, when you see an instant message that says “lol is this your new profile pic?”, and clicking on it, you would have then downloaded a file that holds a Trojan horse malware file.

Once the malware gets to work, a backdoor will be opened, enabling hackers to hijack infected PCs, making sure they are part of a “botnet army” afterwards. Not only that, if the hacker wants to, you can be locked out of your machine – a digital ransom, so to speak. This is a variant of the well-known “Dorkbot” worm, so you might want to think thrice before simply clicking on any link, even if it comes from an apparently trusted source.

Skype users stalked by ransom trojan

Skype has warned users to update to the latest version of the VoIP and video calling app, as well as to check their computer security settings, after a fast-spreading worm was spotted targeting the software. The worm, “Dorkbot,” is being distributed via masked links sent out via Skype’s instant messaging system, Trend Micro reports, co-opting the PC into a botnet and eventually demanding $200 from users in order to unlock their files else see them permanently deleted.

According to the security researchers, various types of social-engineering are being used to encourage Skype IM users to click on the links. Most common appears to be a question along the lines of “lol is this your new profile pic?” which resolves to a file called “Skype_todaysupdate.zip” that downloads the trojan itself.

Trend Micro says that it has observed “upwards of 400 detections in less than 12 hours” from those using its security products, according to TechCrunch, though the actual number is likely to be greater. Both it and Skype point out that users should be wary about clicking links that they’re not expecting and from people that they don’t know.

There’s more information at the Skype forums, and Skype has instructions here on how you can clean your system if you’ve inadvertently been infected.

Skype statement:

“Skype takes the user experience very seriously, particularly when it comes to security. We are aware of this malicious activity and are working quickly to mitigate its impact. We strongly recommend upgrading to the newest Skype version and applying updated security features on your computer. Additionally, following links – even when from your contacts – that look strange or are unexpected is not advisable”

Lumia 810 brings Nokia Windows Phone 8 magic to T-Mobile

The T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 810 has been introduced as an exclusive release on the carrier here in the USA with Windows Phone 8 at its side. This device will be working with a lovely 4.3-inch OLED WVGA Clear Black display as well as interchangeable shells on its back in both cyan and black – rather similar to the Nokia Lumia 820 with changeable shell for wireless charging as well. The difference between that device and this one appears to be slight – mostly a name-change, as it were.

Users will be able to work with the Lumia 810′s high-powered 8-megapixel camera on the back of this device with Carl Zeiss optics and HD video as well. This device also has a 1.2-megapixel camera up front that Microsoft notes is Skype HD certified. The Lumia 810 brings with it a collection of photo-friendly features such as Cinemagraph which will let you make animated GIFs – strange stuff! Another back-shooter-ready feature on this device is Group Shoot, allowing you to pick the best faces and smiles from a set of quickly shot photos of a group of people (or just one person, if you prefer.)

Of course you’ll also have Nokia Music with a lovely collection of advertisement-free, registration and subscription-free music tracks. You’ve got offline play and playlist availability as well – also free – and the ability to access playlists created by “an expert team of global and regional musicologists.” Sounds pretty nice right out of the box!

This device also works with Nokia City Lens, a GPS and camera-utilizing service which has you actually looking at the world around you with tags on businesses that you can access with a tap. This feature has been in the works along with Nokia Drive (for voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation) and Nokia Transit (for all the guides you could possibly need) for a very long time now – it’s time for action! The Nokia Lumia 810 is set to release “in the coming weeks” from T-Mobile with a pricing structure attached – it’ll also be working with T-Mobile’s Unlimited plans – 4G to get pumped up!

Polycom announces RealPresence CloudAXIS Suite for easier access to third-party video chat apps

Polycom has been a dominate figure when it comes to video conferencing in the enterprise market. However, the company is looking to shake things up with a suite of products that will make it easier and more affordable to communicate with other people. Polycom’s new RealPresence CloudAXIS Suite allows users to connect with anyone using a selection of different video chat applications, like Skype, Facebook, and Google Talk.

One of the coolest features of the new suite is its cloud-based platform that allows users to chat with others right through a web browser, so there’s no need for both parties to have anything more installed on their computers. This not only makes it easier for businesses to communicate with one another, but it also removes a lot of the hassle associated with video conferencing,

The CloudAXIS Suite will be available for both large enterprises and service providers, and will offer what Polycom calls Video Collaboration as a Service (VCaaS) on private or public clouds. Overall, the new suite revolves around better user-friendliness and improved support for other video chat programs to make it easier to communicate with more people.

While Polycom’s CloudAXIS Suite will only be available in the corporate sphere, the included features would be excellent for regular consumers as well, and if or when a time comes when a company creates an easy, no-hassle solution like this for consumers, it would definitely be a big hit.
