Skype Twitter Account Hacked, Group Posts Anti-Microsoft Sentiments

Skype Twitter Account Hacked, Group Posts Anti Microsoft SentimentsIt looks like 2014 is off to a series of hacks, with our report earlier claiming that Snapchat was hacked, compromising some 4.6 million user names and phone numbers in the process, and now it looks like Microsoft’s Skype Twitter and Facebook accounts have been hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army, who have in the past successfully hacked Twitter, The Financial Times, and The Washington Post just to name a few. The group took the opportunity to tweet out some anti-Microsoft sentiments, and advised the followers to stop using Microsoft’s services due to monitoring, which we can only assume has to be related to the recent bout of accusations leveled at the NSA.

According to the tweet, “Don’t use Microsoft emails(hotmail, outlook), they are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments. More details soon #SEA.” The tweets have since been deleted which we can only assume means that Microsoft has managed to regain control of their accounts. Thankfully unlike the Snapchat hack, this was only the hack of Microsoft’s Twitter and Facebook pages, meaning that as far as user information is concerned, it appears to be still intact. Microsoft has yet to respond to the hack.

Skype For Android 4.5 Rolls Out

Skype For Android 4.5 Rolls OutJust the other day, we read about how Microsoft rolled out a Skype for Windows Phone 8 update to the masses, and this time around, we have a little bit of something for Android device owners who cannot help but sneak in some Skype goodness into their everyday routine. We are looking at Skype for Android version 4.5 now, where there will be a couple of totally new features which will cater for Android tablet owners, in addition to general improvements across the board.

Skype happens to be the first Android application that will be able to deliver a picture in picture window, letting you check out your video call never mind the fact that you have already switched away to other applications. I guess some might say that this is an experience which would not be too different from Windows 8′s Snap View, albeit it comes with a touch of Android this time around, letting you multitask even when you are attending to a Skype video call. While this feature is available only on tablets, those using Skype 4.5 on your Android smartphone will still be able to catch out a message that performs a permission request to draw on top of other apps. Other bug fixes and quality improvements in Skype 4.5 would include better Video Instant Messaging functionality, compatibility for the Hudl tablet, crash issues on the Nexus 5 would be no more, as well as persistent drop down filter selections on the people tab. Microsoft Updates Skype For Windows Phone 8

Microsoft Updates Skype For Windows Phone 8Skype for Windows Phone 8 has just received an update, where it ought to come with upgraded features, while the version number of the app will be knocked up to 2.13. According to Microsoft, the new Windows Phone 8 Skype app will see the inclusion of a feature that most instant messaging (IM) users have been waiting for a long time, that is, the ability for one to copy as well as paste messages. Microsoft shared, “You can now press and hold an IM message, select copy and paste it to where you need it.”

Apart from that, this particular new version is also tipped to hasten the load time whenever you want to kick off the Skype app from the Windows Phone live tile. Not only that, your eyes will also be pleased to hear that there is a new high contrast mode which can be enabled whenever a Windows Phone display has its settings set to high contrast. Do bear in mind that Microsoft has already stopped support for the Windows Phone 7 Skype app because they want to concentrate on the existing Windows Phone 8 version. We also hope to see that the future Windows Phone 8.1 version of Skype that is tipped to roll out sometime next year, will be a whole lot of fun as well. Looks like Windows Phone 8 is a platform that is getting more and more social! [Press Release]

Skype for China now talks directly to Microsoft, may reduce government snooping (updated)

Skype in China passes censorship tests

Skype use in China was especially risky for a while — when a local company (TOM Online) was processing data with no real safeguards, it virtually guaranteed the presence of government monitoring. Now that Microsoft has teamed with Guangming Founder on a new China-specific Skype build, there’s a chance that your chats are more secure. GreatFire.org has noticed that the updated app encrypts all data and sends it directly to Microsoft, making it harder to censor or spy on any communications. Don’t be too quick to discuss taboo topics, though. It’s not clear that the Chinese software is free of back doors; Microsoft says it’s following local regulations, which aren’t exactly open-minded. Even so, anyone already using Skype in mainland China will likely want to upgrade if they value some semblance of privacy.

Update: Guangming Founder was created by Guangming Daily, a government-backed newspaper; while Skype’s new approach is still more secure, the association casts extra doubt on the privacy that users can expect.

Excessive Swearing In Xbox Live Upload Studio Videos Could Get You Banned

Excessive Swearing In Xbox Live Upload Studio Videos Could Get You BannedOne of things Xbox One users were worried about was the Kinect, which they felt was sort of like an invasion of privacy especially if its camera and microphone were always on. Of course some gamers don’t care, but it seems that a recent bug in the system had some gamers paranoid. According to reports, there have been several Xbox One gamers who have claim that they have been banned due to using excessive profanity during their Skype calls and during Xbox Live Upload Studio videos. The latter is understandable since it is public, but the former does seem as though Microsoft might be listening in and banning gamers for swearing during what are supposed to be private calls.

Microsoft has since issued a statement and claimed that those who got banned from Skype was due to a bug, and not because Microsoft was listening in on their conversations. However for those who got banned due to Xbox Live Upload Studio video, Microsoft states, “We want a clean, safe and fun environment for all users. Excessive profanity as well as other Code of Conduct violations will be enforced upon and result in suspension of some or all privileges on Xbox Live.” Any of our readers experience similar bans themselves? More importantly, has Microsoft unbanned you since, especially if the Skype bans were considered a bug?

Fixes coming for Skype Messaging on Windows Phone; improved device syncing also in the works

If you’ve used Skype on Windows Phone, chances are you’ve dealt with out-of-sync and missed messages. Luckily, a fix is on the horizon: according to Skype product manager Jeff Kunins, who spoke with The Verge, Microsoft is aware of the issues and working to resolve them. Part of the problem, it seems, stems from Microsoft’s move from peer-to-peer networks for Skype to cloud-based servers.

Once the hiccups are fixed, users can expect syncing across devices to avoid any random bursts of old, already-read messages. Kunins also said that continuous notifications will run only on the device you’re currently using, as opposed to every Skype-running gadget you own. Few things are more headache-inducing than five different devices ringing at once, after all. Finally, Kunins hinted that the Skype app for Windows 8.1 will have “a lot of fun things” to offer. Stay tuned.

There’s Nothing Wrong With a FaceTime Thanksgiving

There's Nothing Wrong With a FaceTime Thanksgiving

This will be the first Thanksgiving I’ve ever spent away from family. I really couldn’t take another round of traveling on the worst travel day of the year. And although I’m looking forward to a jolly, boozy holiday with my friends, in the back of the mind I will miss gorging myself on turkey in close proximity to the people with whom I share genetic material.

Skype To End Desktop APIs In December

Skype To End Desktop APIs In DecemberMicrosoft’s Skype messaging and VOIP platform used to be a desktop application, but has since moved on to other platforms, such as mobile, and thanks to Microsoft making the Skype API available, there have been a number of apps and software that allows users to connect to Skype without having to turn to the official Skype program. Well it looks like all of that will soon be coming to an end as Microsoft has announced that they will be discontinuing the Skype Desktop API in order to deliver a more consistent experience across all platforms.

According to the Skype blog, “We’ve been working hard to develop new technologies and make improvements that will benefit Skype users across all platforms, especially on mobile devices. These changes will significantly improve the call quality and speed of delivery of instant messages, while retaining excellent battery life of mobile devices.” The blog goes on to state that they will be retiring the Desktop API come December 2013, “The Desktop API was created in 2004 and it doesn’t support mobile application development. We have, therefore, decided to retire the Desktop API in December 2013.” We understand there are some apps out there that allows users to connect to Skype along with a host of other messaging platforms, so if you’re using those programs, perhaps it’s time to give the official app a try.
