Skype to end all third-party app activity in December

Skype will no longer support third-party desktop application development beginning in December, the company has announced. This includes all recording, broadcasting, and other kinds of apps, but it also includes third-party hardware such as headphones with on-board call controls. Skype is offering no exceptions to the rule, as far as SlashGear can tell, and its […]

Native Skype App For BlackBerry 10 Could Be On Its Way

Native Skype App For BlackBerry 10 Could Be On Its WayEarlier this year it was revealed that Skype would be making its way onto BlackBerry 10 devices, which is good news especially since the BlackBerry 10 platform could use more big name apps. However the downside is that the app, at that time, turned out to be a port of the Android version of Skype. While there is nothing wrong with ports, the fact of the matter is that they are not optimized for the BlackBerry 10 platform, meaning that it is not as integrated and smooth as it could be compared to a native app, but we guess given that BlackBerry 10 users have no other choice, it will have to do.

The good news is that if you’re a heavy Skype user on the BlackBerry 10, you might be pleased to learn that a native BlackBerry 10 Skype app could be on its way. This is according to a tweet by Brian Zubert, the Manager of Developer Relations at BlackBerry, who in his tweet wrote, “Nice update today to the @Skype #BlackBerry app. Huge improvement, but still looking forward to the full on native app! Might be 10.2 only!” Given his status and role at BlackBerry, presumably what he said was not made in mistake, although the downside is the the app might only be for OS 10.2, so if your carrier has yet to roll out the 10.2 update for your BlackBerry 10 device, you could be out of luck.

Skype Looking To Improve Message Syncing Across Devices

Skype Looking To Improve Message Syncing Across DevicesIf you have ever used Skype on multiple devices, you are probably acutely aware of how frustrating and annoying it is to have to wait for older messages to load and play catchup, especially if you have not used it on a different device for a long period of time. This is especially painfully slow for mobile devices, but thankfully Skype is hoping to change all of that in the future. The team at Skype has announced on their blog that they are working on improving the Skype experience and one of the ways they are doing that is by introducing a more reliable and efficient way to sync messages across platforms.

According to the Skype team, these changes are expected to begin rolling out across various Skype clients in the upcoming months, so those who use Skype often might be able to notice the difference in the foreseeable future. Not only can users expect their messages to be synced, but missed call notifications as well, just in case you received one on your home computer but it does not show up at your work computer and etc. There will be a host of new features and improvements that Skype will be making over time, so if you’d like to learn more, hit up Skype’s blog for the details, but in the meantime who else is looking forward to better syncing across devices? I know I am!

Microsoft outlines 66,539 account requests from law enforcement during first half of 2013

We’ve covered various transparency reports before, but now the whole notion takes on a different feel in our post-PRISM world. Microsoft’s latest report details that it received 37,196 requests from law enforcement agencies between this January and June, which impacted 66,539 of its accounts. Seventy-seven percent of those requests were for data like a user’s name, IP history and billing address, and with 21 percent of requests, no data was disclosed at all. However, in 2.19 percent of queries by law enforcement, Redmond disclosed “at least some” customer content. What does that mean? Well, the company’s definition includes the subject or body of an email, photos stored in SkyDrive and address book info. According to the document, the info was all obtained via lawful warrants and court orders.

While National Security Letters also fall under the guise of law enforcement requests — which primarily come from the FBI in order to obtain records such as phone numbers and email addresses — Microsoft is only allowed to publish these statistics on an annual basis. Hence, they’re absent this time around, and will be published in the company’s next Law Enforcement Requests Report. To see just how deep the rabbit hole goes, do check out the source. We suggest putting on a pot of coffee, though — it’s not a quick read.

Skype for Mac version 6.9 is out, brings more specific screen sharing options

Skype for Mac version 6.9 is out, brings more specific screen sharing options

Not a major overhaul by any means, but good news for anyone who’s been using Skype for Mac and has been frustrated by a few lingering limitations. The latest build, version 6.9, corrects an annoying bug that caused the name field to overlap with mood messages on certain profile pages. The Skype team also changed the way screen sharing works, so that you can share just a specific window if you want, and not the whole screen. Other changes: when you do a search from the toolbar, phone numbers for Mac contacts now appear in the results. If you hover your cursor over links, it’ll now look like a hand. Finally, Skype added support for three more European languages: Swedish, Finnish and European Portuguese. And that’s all she wrote! Hit up that second source link below to download the latest version.

Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 buyers get 200GB SkyDrive storage for two years, free international Skype calls for one year (updated)

Need another reason to pick up Microsoft’s latest iteration of the Surface tablet, the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2? How’s 200GB of free SkyDrive storage for the first two years, plus what Microsoft’s calling “the best of Skype” (free international calling and WiFi hotspot access) for the first year? Because that’s exactly what you’ll get when you plunk down the $450 / $900 for the new Windows tablet line later this year.

Both of Microsoft’s services — SkyDrive for cloud file saving and Skype for online phone / text / video chat — are part of the purchase price apparently, though that comes with a limited time plan. But is it enough to entice consumers who were already burned once by the first Surface line? That’s a question that only time can answer, but we sure don’t mind the bonus stuff!

Update: Microsoft’s official PR says the deal applies to both versions of the new Surface (RT and Pro) and we’ve updated our post accordingly. Additionally, that free Skype international calling works for “calling to landlines in more than 60 countries,” and the Skype WiFi deal offers unlimited access for that first year.

Update 2: Oh, and should you decide you want to keep that capacious storage in the cloud past two years, or don’t want to buy a Surface to get it in the first place, Microsoft’s announced that users can add 200GB to their SkyDrives for just $100 a year.
