Smart TV Could Spy On You

Smart TV Could Spy On YouDo you think that with the massive jumps that technology has made over the past years, we seem to live in a world where there is less and less privacy? So much so that anything that comes with a built-in camera could possibly be exploited in a manner where it could be recording whatever it sees without you commanding it to. Similar to smartphones, Smart TVs can also be hacked and compromised. In fact, at the Black Hat security conference, researchers Aaron Grattafiori and Josh Yavor showed the masses how various 2012 models of Samsung Smart TVs had vulnerabilities within which could be taken advantage of, including turning on the camera, controlling of social media apps such as Facebook or Skype, and accessing the slew of files and app on the Smart TV itself.

Grattafiori said, “Because the TV only has a single user, any type of compromise into an application or into Smart Hub, which is the operating system — the smarts of the TV — has the same permission as every user, which is, you can do everything and anything.” n a nutshell, the hacker would have gained full control of your TV. The weak link to cause all this? Javascript or HTML5 which remains vulnerable to traditional unsophisticated, and just in case you want to remain safe and sound from your Smart TV’s camera, just place a piece of non-transparent tape over it.

Alibaba develops Smart TV OS, will use it to sell you things

    Image

As much as we enjoyed the decade we spent vegging out in front of the shopping channel, we had hoped that the internet had put such days behind us. Not so, thanks to Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, which has developed its own Smart TV OS, separate to Aliyun, in the hope of pumping even more cash out of our wallets. Developed in collaboration with Wasu Media, the duo will launch a set-top box later in the year, and are in talks with companies like Cisco, Haier and Allwinner to produce compatible devices. While customers will be able to use smartphones to stream media and control their TVs, they’ll probably be strong-armed into buying apps, shopping at the Alibaba-owned Juhuasuan and even making utility payments via the company’s Alipay platform. Looks like we’ve got no choice but to finally buy that noiseless karaoke microphone we’ve been avoiding all these years.

Panasonic Smart TV snub sees Japanese broadcasters under fire

Panasonic has slammed Japanese TV networks for allegedly blacklisting Smart TV commercials, accusing them of inappropriately trying to waylay the growth of on-demand and IPTV services. The TV manufacturer claims broadcasters in Japan refused to air its Smart VIERA TV adverts showing the sets’ split-screen functionality, AFP reports, with suggestions that the networks argued viewers would find them “confusing”.

    panasonic_viera_smart_tv

The thirty-second commercial, which you can see below, shows a voice-activated Smart TV with face recognition and a touchpad-navigated remote. The set is capable of showing live TV, on-demand services like YouTube, and internet pages simultaneously.

It’s that potential hit to live broadcasts that the Japanese networks are accused of being afraid of, to the point where they’re unwilling to air anything promoting the technology.

Panasonic, however, isn’t willing to criticize the broadcasters too vocally. “IPTV, or smart television, is a new area of service, and we are in talks to create new rules for broadcasting” the company said. “We refrain from making further comments.”

None of the networks themselves have commented on the decision not to air the commercials, which was made available on YouTube instead. There, Japanese viewers have weighed in with their own conclusions, however, generally arguing that broadcasters are waging an impossible battle against the inescapable rise of IPTV.

Instead, broadcasters would seemingly prefer a hybrid model of Smart TV where their own input is more valued. Sets offering NHK “hybridcast” support went on sale in June, with the service itself launching as a trial later this year. As well as showing more program information on-screen, along with interactive content to go with the currently watched program, it will support second-screen content on smartphones and tablets.
