BlackBerry ousts marketing and operations chiefs, replaces CFO

Kristian Tear and Frank Boulben

The high-level shakeups aren’t over at BlackBerry just because the company has a new CEO. The company has just let go of Chief Operating Officer Kristian Tear (pictured at left) and Chief Marketing Officer Frank Boulben (right), both of whom had assumed their roles roughly one year ago. There’s no mention of immediate replacements. The Waterloo firm is also replacing Chief Financial Officer Brian Bidulka with the company’s Compliance head James Yersh; Bidulka will stay on as an advisor for the rest of the fiscal year to ease the transition. CEO John Chen hasn’t provided explanations for the individual departures, but he describes the executive shuffle as necessary for focusing on BlackBerry’s “core strength” in mobile device management. Let’s just hope that Chen is better at engineering a turnaround than his predecessors.

Gold HTC One smartphone gets official

HTC reveals another gold-colored One, this time without the 18-carat finish

It seems a limited edition 18 carat gold One just isn’t enough for HTC. Today, the Taiwanese smartphone maker unveiled another golden variant of its Android flagship, swapping the soft and expensive exterior of its MOBO-themed One for a familiar aluminum chassis. We first saw the front half of HTC’s latest variant in September, suggesting the company would make a fifth color available alongside its silver, black, blue and red designs. As for specs, there’s no change internally, which means it’s still powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 processor and features the same 4-megapixel UltraPixel sensor. The latest variant does come late to the game, with Apple’s gold iPhone 5s enjoying huge demand and Samsung launching the Galaxy S 4 gold edition, albeit in limited markets. HTC says the device will be available across Europe with a number of partners — when we hear more, we’ll let you know.

Google+ for iOS gets full-res photo backups, lets you share your location

Google+ for iOS with photos and location

After nearly a month, Google is delivering on its promise of bringing full-size photo and video backups to Google+ on iOS. The app’s version 4.6 update now lets iOS 7 users upload imagery at its original resolution as long as there’s enough available cloud storage. Photographers aren’t the only ones who benefit from the new software, though. It also introduces the location-sharing option from the Android release, translates posts in-line and unifies search. Socialites eager for more detail in their pictures (or their whereabouts) just need to visit the App Store for an upgrade.

Moto G makes its North American debut at Telus and Koodo

Moto G hands-on

The Moto G may not reach the US until January, but that doesn’t mean it will be unavailable on North American shores until then. Motorola’s budget wunderkind has just reached the continent through Canada’s Telus and its low-cost Koodo brand. Both carriers are selling the 8GB smartphone for $200 CAD ($189 US) off-contract; thriftier shoppers can get the Moto G for free on a two-year Telus agreement, or $50 at Koodo with a $150 use tab. Other local carriers aren’t expected to offer the Moto G in the near future, so this may represent the best chance of getting the handset for both Canucks and eager American importers.
