AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile Will Not Charge Customers For Spam SMS

AT&T, Sprint, T Mobile Will Not Charge Customers For Spam SMS

Receiving spam SMS is just a way of life as we’re sure many of you have inadvertently given your number out to a company, not realizing they’d be texting you on an hourly basis with special discounts you can receive if you reply to their offer. The annoying part of these spam SMS is the fact that they counted against your allowance of texts, that is, if you don’t already have an unlimited texting plan. Today, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint are making sure these kinds of texts don’t count against your monthly text allowance. (more…)

US carriers no longer let premium text message services bill customers

    Facebook girl is mad!

Among the many surprise costs that annoy cellphone owners, unwanted text message service fees can be the worst; they’re hard to stop, and not always worth the effort. Those fees may not irk many US subscribers after today, though — AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile now stop “problematic” premium SMS services from billing their customers. Donations and those all-important talent show votes will still go through. Verizon isn’t part of today’s announcements, although the company’s General Counsel William Petersen tells us that Big Red is already “winding down” premium SMS services. There’s a good chance that these shady messagers will simply change tactics, but they’ll at least have a tougher time scamming phone owners.

Google Hangouts adds SMS support but KitKat keyboard prompts typist fury

Google has released Hangouts 2.0 for Android, adding in SMS and MMS support in addition to enabling group MMS conversations and embedding animated GIFs. Promised when the incoming update was first revealed late last month, the new app also drops alongside an update to the Android keyboard, also bringing it to version 2.0, though that […]

Hangouts SMS support doesn’t work with Google Voice

Earlier this week, Google announced a Hangouts update that brings SMS functionality, which is nice but unfortunately comes with a snafu. According to Nikhyl Singhal, who took to Google+ today, there are some issues to be ironed out with Google Voice, and for the time being neither of the two aforementioned Google services will be […]

Google Hangouts SMS support added alongside GPS and Gifs

There’s now one single location users need to work with to talk with video, text, and images in the Google Android experience. Here with Hangouts, Google has made clear that they’re updating the system with three new features, the first – and most important – of these being SMS support. This means that the Hangouts […]

Best Google Voice Apps for iPhone

This article was written on November 16, 2011 by CyberNet.

Google Voice is a great service for having a single phone number ring multiple phones, plus you also get unlimited text messaging for free. A deal like that is pretty hard to beat, but iOS users aren’t able to get the integrated experience without jailbreaking their iPhone. There are some apps, however, that try to make using Google Voice a little more seamless.

The commonality I found between most iOS Google Voice apps is that since there is no public API for Google Voice many of them can feel sluggish if you don’t have a good network connection. This is because they are essentially loading and parsing the desktop version of the Google Voice site with each operation. When you’re trying to send or receive a simple text message the last thing you want to do is wait a minute for the app to finish what it’s doing.

The developer of Think Messenger ($2.99 on iTunes) and Think Dialer ($1.99 on iTunes) decided to take a different route. Instead of using the desktop version he went with the mobile version, which meant everything would be a lot faster, but some limitations would also be imposed. The speed improvements over some of the other apps like GV Mobile+ is rather noticeable to me. It even feels faster than the official Google Voice app released by Google themselves.

You may be wondering why there are two apps instead of just one, but I think that’s what makes me love this integration even more than the others. By separating out the calling and SMS text messaging it feels more like the native iPhone experience, and overall the apps feel a lot more polished than the others I’ve bought. The only thing that feels a little out of place is that the voicemail retrieval is done through the Think Messenger app, which I suspect is because the Think Dialer does not yet support push notifications. With Think Messenger you get native push notifications without any subscription fees, and it works very well.

Texting Before You Sleep Might Be Detrimental To Your Health

Texting Before You Sleep Might Be Detrimental To Your HealthIn a survey which was conducted on 83 college students, it was discovered that the higher the number of text messages that they sent out before bedtime, the more difficult it was to end up with a good night’s sleep after that. Does it sound like a whole lot of hogwash? Perhaps, or perhaps not. This particular study was written up in the Psychology of Popular Media Culture, and it was done before majority of people tend to go to bed with their handsets right beside them. Hence, it would be no surprise that late night texting sessions tend to end up with responses sent to you by your fellow night owls, which would make it disruptive to your sleep. Imagine yourself about to enter dreamland when the buzz or alert tone plays, jolting you awake. It is common sense as well as probability, really, to arrive at the conclusion of such a study.

According to the authors of the study, they suggested one way that would give you an improved quality of sleep. Before you hit the bed, put your phone on silent (and not vibrate), in addition to flipping the phone screen side down, unless you are willing to have a night light beside you. Alternatively, since doing so would mean you would not be woken up by any means via text or an incoming call, why not go the whole nine yards and just turn off the phone?

Android 4.4 KitKat will allow users to select default SMS app

Presently, those who aren’t keen on Android‘s Messaging app have a variety of different options to choose from via the Play Store, some that function better than others. One of the reasons some apps have their share of issues is because of how the developers have to go about creating them — with hidden APIs, […]

    Get Rain Notifications Using IFTTT

This article was written on September 05, 2012 by CyberNet.

    Rain alert alarm notification

It’s not a lot of fun when you’re caught outside in a storm without an umbrella, but the awesome If This Then That (IFTTT) service can be used as an advanced warning system for rain and thunderstorms. For those of you not familiar with IFTTT it’s basically a website that is able to tie multiple online services together. For example, you can have any image you’re tagged in on Facebook automatically saved to your Dropbox account. Or you can save any starred Google Reader items to Evernote. It’s a free and unbelievably awesome service that I have come to rely on.

IFTTT is also capable of sending you a notification via email or SMS based on the weather conditions. You can have it send out the weather conditions every morning if that’s what you want, or you can just have it give you alerts when it is about to rain. IFTTT checks the weather condition every 15-minutes, and if it finds that it is raining in your area it can send an email or SMS message so that you’re aware of the impending downpour. Alternatively you can have it push out a notification to you if tomorrow’s forecast calls for rain.

So how do you set these up? If you’re already familiar with IFTTT I’m sure you’ll be able to create “recipes” for these actions in just a few seconds. The good news is that IFTTT also lets users share recipes that have been created so that you don’t have to go through the hassle. Here are some pre-made recipes for getting notifications based on whether it is currently raining or whether it is supposed to rain tomorrow:

Personally I set up alerts for both situations. I find that the notification about whether it is currently raining gives you about a 10-15 minute heads up which in some situations just isn’t enough. That’s where the daily notification comes in… each night IFTTT will send me an alert if it thinks it is supposed to rain tomorrow based on the forecast. That way I know whether I should grab an umbrella before I walk out the door in the morning.

Want even more weather alerts? IFTTT can handle any of the following conditions:

    • Current temperature drops below…
This Trigger monitors your local temperature and fires whenever the temperature drops below the value you provide.
    • Current temperature rises above…
This Trigger monitors your local temperature and fires whenever the temperature rises above the value you provide.
    • Current condition changes to…
This Trigger monitors changes in the current weather condition. When one of those conditions is met the Trigger fires. Currently only these simple conditions are supported: Rain, Snow, Cloudy, Clear.
    • Tomorrow’s low drops below…
This Trigger fires every time tomorrow’s forecasted low temperature drops below a value you provide.
    • Tomorrow’s high rises above…
This Trigger fires every time tomorrow’s forecasted high temperature rises above a value you provide.
    • Tomorrow’s forecast calls for…
This Trigger monitors changes in tomorrow’s forecasted weather condition.
    • Sunrise…
This Trigger fires within 15 minutes of the sunrise in your location.
    • Sunset…
This Trigger fires within 15 minutes of the sunset in your location.
    • Wind speed rises above…
This Trigger fires every time the wind speed rises above a value you specify in your location.
    • Current pollen count rises above…
This Trigger monitors your local pollen levels and fires every time the pollen count rises above the value you provide (1-12).
