BlackBerry PlayBook 2.1 update goes live with SMS, portrait email

BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 with Bold 9930

RIM’s attention around its QNX-based platforms might revolve around BlackBerry 10 as of late, but don’t think that it’s leaving BlackBerry PlayBook users behind. A PlayBook 2.1 update is rolling out today that fills in some of the gaps left by 2.0 earlier this year. Habitual messagers can now start SMS text messages directly from the tablet when tethered through BlackBerry Bridge; they also get overdue support for a portrait view in email, calendars and contacts. If communication isn’t the cornerstone of your life, you’ll still find a few niceties such as Android App Player support for the camera and in-app purchases, device encryption that extends to personal data and wireless printing beyond the local network. For now, you’ll have to be an owner of the original, WiFi-only PlayBook to leap on the 2.1 train today — those who sprang for the usually carrier-bound PlayBook 4G LTE should get their upgrade within a month.

Swimming coach jailed due to oversight in SMS recipients

I am quite sure that some of us have ended up doing some absent minded things in the past, where among them include locking our car keys in the car itself, doing the same for house keys, and perhaps even walking into a room to take something only to forget what we had come in for originally. Well, I am quite sure that the last thing on swimming coach Craig Evans’ mind when he sent out a sultry text message to his girlfriend, was to end up in jail. Unfortunately for the 24-year-old swimming coach from Birmingham, UK, that is exactly what happened to him when he messaged his entire address book in his BlackBerry, asking for “skin on skin” sex.

Since most of his contacts are his students in their early teens, the UK laws concerning the solicitation of sex from minors kicked in, where he was promptly arrested for criminal mass text on charges of inciting a child to engage in sex, been sentenced to 18 months in jail in the process. Good thing the presiding judge over the case had a clearer mind on things, stating, “The facts of this case are rather unusual. Messages…were sent to every single contact in his phone, including members of his own family.” Evans walked out of court a free man, but I am quite sure he sure as heck knows how to use his BlackBerry well from now on.

Why Breaking Up With Someone Via Text Sucks [Rant]

Probably the worst part about all the great technology we use to communicate with one another is the ability it gives us not to communicate with one another. Rarely will a text message accomplish what a conversation can. Which is why you should never, ever, not ever break up with somebody via text message. (There are a few possible exceptions to this rule.) More »

Before Sexting, There Was Polaroid [Polaroid]

Long before cell phones gave us the ability to share pictures with the tap of a button, Polaroid was synonymous with instant photography. In his new book Instant: The Story of Polaroid, Christopher Bonanos explains how that little one step camera paved the way for sexting as we know it: More »

Facebook Messenger updated for iPhone 5

The Facebook environment on iOS for iPhone has been bumped upward once again with the Messenger app grabbing an update with a whole new user interface. If you’re the type of person who loves to message back and forth with friend via Facebook and have never tried the stand-alone app for iOS, now’s a better time than ever before! You’ll be getting favorites integration, better performance than with any version that’s come before, and the whole thing just looks a bit better – as it always does each time it’s updated.

This update brings both the iPhone and the iPod touch up to a new generation while the iPad will just have to wait a bit longer. On that note, you might also want to note that this version still does not include one of the only plusses that the Android version has over iOS: in-app SMS messaging integration from the rest of your phone. You’ve got a fully updated user interface here that does bring the app up to the already lovely looking Android version of the app, but SMS integration still does not exist.

It’s odd then that recent reports have Facebook developers being forced to use Android devices until their main Android app is up to snuff – or at least up to the quality that the iPhone version is. It would appear that the Messenger app does not live in the same universe. This version of the app is optimized for iOS 6 as well, and will be making full use of your iPhone 5 screen size.

The favorites list will more than likely be your most-loved feature here, with everyone’s massive cross-section of friends, colleagues, and business contacts quite often lending itself to a less than optimal friend-finding experience. Add your buddies to a smaller list and make the whole thing streamlined! This app is available for download or update in the iTunes app store right this minute – grab it now!

Woman texted her way down a cliff in Alaska

Have you ever texted or played a game on your smartphone while walking? If you have answered in the affirmative, then you would do well to take heed the moral of this story. Apparently, a lady was too busy texting on her handset, and when she tried to discard her cigarette butt in Kodiak, Alaska at a nearby cliff, she lost her balance and bearings, slipping on the wet grass in her garden (yes, her garden is right on the side of a cliff that plunges 60-feet below) and getting a free gravity ride all the way down.

Thankfully, she ended up just a few feet away from the tide and suffered from multiple injuries. Her recovery is well underway, and she should be back to normal soon. One thing’s for sure though, I don’t think that she will be walking around and texting any more in the future. It was rather fortunate that her friend heard her screams and managed to summon help in good time. Needless to say, there is no need to ‘test’ out this theory unless you love adrenaline pumping moments.

Facebook revamps Messenger for Android with friendlier chats, teases core app update soon (update 2: iOS refresh as well)

Facebook revamps Messenger for Android with friendlier chats, teases core app update soon

Facebook has already been making its mea culpas for the state of its main Android app, and it’s showing further atonement through an Android-first update to its Facebook Messenger companion release. The new app is imbued with a “more conversational” (if fairly familiar-looking) bubble-driven layout for chats. Likewise, it’s easier to see if a conversation is needed in the first place: a friend status list is always available with a swipe, while fresh support for texting directly from Messenger can keep the discussion flowing when SMS comes into play. Android users can get the Messenger upgrade today, with promise of an iOS equivalent soon. The regular Android app is getting an update as well, although we wouldn’t cry with joy just yet: it’s more of a parallel to the Messenger update than the speed-up that some of us crave.

Update: The company’s Christian Legnitto has posted a lengthy explanation that the Messenger rework and the core Facebook update (already available) are part of a new strategy that brings Android and iOS updates at regular intervals, rather than waiting solely for major features. If all goes well, the social network can provide speed upgrades and bug fixes at a much quicker pace.

Update 2: And the hits just keep on coming — although today is mostly about Android, Facebook has tweaked its main app’s iOS version (App Store) for iPhone 5 and iOS 6 support.

Apple patent application has iPhones text when calls don’t reach spotty coverage areas

Apple patent application has iPhones text when calls don't reach spotty coverage areas

If you’re already using Android 4.0 or iOS 6, you’re likely familiar with the option to send a pre-made text reply to incoming calls you can’t take. But what if it’s your own call that won’t go through, at no fault of your own? Apple may have that covered through a patent application that could keep the accusations to a minimum. If flaky reception at the destination prevents your call from connecting, the proposed idea has your iPhone automatically send a text message indicating that you’ve at least tried to get in touch. Recipients with Apple’s hardware contribute to their own solution in this world: the message code is a cue to measure the signal strength and flag the location as a weak point in the carrier’s network. Whether or not Apple acts on its concept is as much of a mystery as with most other patents, although we’re hoping it becomes real. If anything’s going to strain a relationship, it shouldn’t be dodgy coverage.

You Can’t Spoof SMS Messages on Your iPhone Anymore [Security]

The SMS protocol on iOS has had an issue wherein you’re able to manipulate the little-used “Reply To” field in a text message to make it look like it was coming from anyone you wanted it to. But with the proper release of iOS 6 the days of pulling that stunt on an iPhone are over. More »

How would you change SMS Audio Sync by 50

Rap singer, philanthropist, actor and high-end sound designer, truly Curtis Jackson is the Aristotle of our day. Of course, it’s his latter profession that brings him to the coveted pages of How Would You Change, as we delve into his SMS Audio Sync by 50 wireless headphones. When our in-house audio maven strapped them to his head, he found that $400 price tag to be a little steep given how messy the overall experience was — with features like “Thumpp” bass boost only available when connected via dongle and other features absent unless you buy more accessories. Our reviewer hoped that Version 2.0 would iron out all of those creases, but how about you? What suggestions would you like to send to the venerable 50 Cent about how he can improve these high-end cans?
