Facebook event to reveal “real” Android app (not a phone)

If you’ve been following the Facebook press events that have occurred over the past couple of years, you know one thing is rather apparent: they love to hold press conferences. Zuckerberg and the Facebook crew have held press conferences for everything from the opening bell on their IPO top an announcement about possible Facebook couponing. Here’s the long and short it, it being the April 4th Facebook event: if Facebook wanted to make a Facebook phone, they wouldn’t do it like this.

homeandroid

We’ve seen the Facebook phone already. It’s been released by HTC more than once, and rumors of a phone such as this have been swirling for years. The reason people are pumped up about discussing such a device isn’t because they want one, it’s because the idea is so absurd. Why in god’s name would someone create a smartphone dedicated to one single service?

“Anyone for an HTC ChaCha?

Instead you’ve got a Facebook event coming up that will address the fact that there’s been no acceptably solid release of a Facebook app for Android thus far in the social network’s history. What we’ll see is a presentation about 1 hour long with several top Facebook developers talking about how this version of Facebook for Android will be a real, dedicated, just as good as iOS release. And we’ll all go home wondering why Facebook didn’t just send out a press release instead.

Have a peek at the iOS version of Facebook today, then have a look at the Android version of Facebook, then you’ll know what’s being released at the upcoming event. Let us know if you think otherwise!

Myriad Social TV brings social networking to your cable box (hands-on video)

Myriad Social TV brings social networking to your cable box hands on video

The marriage of social networking and television is nothing new, but Myriad recently launched Social TV, a white label solution which allows TV service providers to roll out their own custom social networking platform on your cable box. It complements services like Twitter, Facebook and Google+ by offering a more contextual way for viewers to interact with their friends while watching TV. Social TV provides an integrated HTML5 experience that’s consistent across both television and companion devices (phones and tablets). Viewers can chose between receiving alerts on their TVs, mobile devices or both and can create show- or series-specific virtual communities that automatically expire when the program ends. The system is even mindful of time zones and time-shifts messages to prevent spoilers. More after the break.

Picturelife Gives You a Truly Photographic Memory

Pictures speak a thousand words. A couple more hundred, if they’re really good. When arranged one after the other chronologically, you could even use them to tell your life’s story. Doing so, however, will take a lot of time and patience that you may not have.

Lucky for you, you can get Picturelife to do it all for you.

picturelife

Picturelife is an app that you can use to sync all your photos from various social networking platforms to your computer. The app can grab images from numerous popular sites including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, and Dropbox. After the images are synced, organized and de-duped, you can access and browse through all your life’s shots on your desktop, browser, or on your mobile device via their iOS and Android apps.

Memories are free to make. Unfortunately, they may not be free to organize in this case, because you’ll have to purchase a storage plan in order to start using Picturelife to back up your pictures – unless your life can be summed up in less than about 1700 photos (or 5GB.)

Motorola hype advisor tips Custom-order Smartphone Hardware

In a single post to a Google+ community, the newest Motorola “advisor” Guy Kawasaki has stoked a wildfire of suggestions for the upcoming so-called X Phone. This Kawasaki fellow was for many, many years an Apple/Macintosh evangelist, having “switched” to Android just this past year – and just this past month (February 27th, to be exact) – he joined Motorola as an advisor, focusing on, as he puts it: “product design, user interface, marketing, and social media.” He’s made a post today asking whether it’d be amazing to be able to custom-order a smartphone the way Porsche allows with their “Exclusive” series.

xphone1

Of course as this suggestion was posted to Kawasaki’s own “Mobile Devices” Google+ community, it could simply be that the man is just asking interesting questions about the future in smartphones in general. If on the other hand he’s a social media specialist and doesn’t know that creating a post such as this with his current title would create a bit of heat for Motorola in the near future, then he’s no social media specialist at all.

So what’ve we got? The still very, very hypothetical Motorola X Phone, a mystical unicorn of a device that’s supposedly going to be Motorola’s first Google Nexus smartphone. This device will, it’s said, work with the following:

littlemoto

• Motorola Ruggedness (metal, kevlar, splashproof innards)
• Google’s next-generation Vanilla (Google-only) Android software
• Next-generation display
• Next-generation processor
• Next-generation camera
• Innovations in back-facing touch panels

And that’s it. Really, there’s no confirmation on what this device will be, and we’re truly going on threads that lead to nowhere at the moment. But with Kawasaki’s suggestive post, we can add the following to the list:

• Custom-order casing and features

At the moment you’re already able to get many smartphones in several different colors – the Samsung Galaxy S III comes in blue, black, white, red, brown, and sometimes pink! You’ve also got a choice of what size internal storage you’ll be working with for most of the major smartphone releases. So what’s left? Maybe some Apple-esque back-facing casing etching – fun!

Facebook introduces cleaner look to Timeline

Facebook may have finally ignored the Timeline at the company’s most recent press event when they unveiled the new News Feed that’ll be coming shortly, but that doesn’t mean they’re not making changes. Facebook has introduced a cleaner look to Timeline, and they’ll be slowly rolling out the new design over the coming weeks.

new-fb-timeline

One of the biggest differences you’ll notice right away are the elimination of the “Friends,” “Photos,” and “Likes” thumbnails, which are now compressed into simple text links toward the top. The “About” section also looks different this time around, as it now sits vertically on the left side of the Timeline.

Overall, though, your various Likes are organized much more neatly, and you can manage your favorite movies, books, TV shows, etc. in a more orderly fashion, including the ability to not only add your favorites, but also add movies and books that you want to read. These are separated from your favorites using tabs.

Apps also are more integrated into your Timeline, meaning that certain apps can have dedicated sections. For instance, if you use Instagram a lot, you can dedicate a section of your Timeline to strictly Instagram photos that you’ve taken. And now, all of your likes on the left side of your Timeline, with all recent activity being posted on the right side, allowing for easier browsing and scanning.

Netflix introduces Netflix Social to share favorite movies and shows with friends

I bet you wish you could share all the fascinating things you’re watching on Netflix with friends, and thanks to a new feature that Netflix announced today, you finally can. Netflix Social is the company’s first attempt at getting in on the social networking buzz with Facebook, and it allows you to see what’s popular among your friends.

netflix-social

Netflix uses Facebook to connect you with all of your friends that use Netflix, so once you connect your Netflix account to Facebook and agree to share the content you’re watching, you’ll see two new rows show up on the Netflix homepage, one of which is “Friends’ Favorites,” where you can browse through the movies and shows that your friends enjoy.

The other row is called “Watched By Your Friends,” and it consists of movies and shows that your friends have recently watched. It provides a list of all your Facebook friends who are on Netflix, and you can cycle through individual friends to see what they recently watched. This is an unfiltered list, meaning that it shows all the movies and TV shows that your friends have agreed to share.

Of course, you can control what you share and what you don’t want to share, so if there’s a movie or TV show that you watch, but you don’t want to share it with your friends, you can simply click on the “Don’t Share This” button under each item. Netflix is rolling out the feature over the next couple of days, and the company says that all US members will have access to Netflix social by the end of the week.

SociaLink Makes Social Network Connections a Snap

If you’ve ever met someone at a party or meeting and wanted to exchange social networking information, you know it can be kind of a pain. Sure, you can hand them a business card – even one with a QR code on it – but that exchange of info still isn’t instantaneous, and requires the other party to follow up later. Now, there’s a new app which makes it easy for you to trade information – assuming you both have the app installed, of course.

socialink

SociaLink provides users with a fast way to share their Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram info, instantly adding both you and your new connection to each others networks. Simply start up the app, let it search for nearby phones or tablets, and then choose the networks you want to request access connect to. The other party then accepts, and you’re connected. You can also send social network info via email, but what fun would that be? Check out how SociaLink works in the video below:

You can download SociaLink over on the iTunes App Store for free. There’s not an Android version yet, but there should be one coming in the not-too-distant future.

Socialmatic Camera Going from Concept to Reality

Remember the Socialmatic camera concept by ADR-Studio? It’s been almost a year since they unveiled the instant camera basically takes Instagram to a whole new level. It took a while, but they’re going ahead with production for the Socialmatic, which is expected to launch early next year.

polaroid socialmatic cameras 2

That said, a few changes are in order. The Socialmatic will no longer be exclusively linked to Instagram (for obvious reasons), but will instead allow users to share their snaps on Socialmatic’s own network or on the usual social media channels, like Twitter, Facebook, and of course, Instagram. What sets the camera apart is that it’ll come with an internal printer, so you can print your favorite photos instantly and wherever you want to.

polaroid socialmatic cameras 3

The Socialmatic camera will will run on Android and come with 16GB of internal storage. It will also be equipped with Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth connectivity, GPS, as well as have an SC-HD slot for external storage. It’s also expected to have a large 4:3 ratio LCD viewfinder which takes up almost the entire back of the camera, and offer true optical zoom.

In case you were wondering about the branding, the Socialmatic team is currently working with Polaroid to help bring the camera to market, though there’s currently no final agreement for them to produce the camera. No pricing information has been made available yet.

Facebook acquires Social-Blogging group Storylane

This week the folks at Facebook have both revealed a brand new set of features for their News Feed – for you and I – and have acquired a platform for social blogging by the name of Storylane. The acquisition of this group has been announced by Facebook as a key acquisition that’ll bring their ability to showcase “real identity through sincere and meaningful content” up to the forefront, per the previous work done by the acquired group. This acquisition moves the team of five employees that make up Storylane into the fold – the Facebook fold.

storylane

Storylane takes what you’ve always been sharing to Facebook and makes it bigger – not just in a literal pixel-size sense, but in a way that’s personable and professional at the same time. Those of you that’ve been using Storylane for the past several weeks or months – you’ll be given tools to migrate your work over to new services in the near future. Of course Facebook will be on that list, but from what we’re seeing from Storylane’s announcement, you’ll be running forward with services of all types as well.

As it has been with a large collection of acquisitions over the past several years in the technology universe, we’re seeing Storylane give a message that appears both sincerely written and ready to be more than excited about the purchase. With Facebook owning Storylane, we can expect the work they’ve done over their relatively short past to be integrated into the Facebook user interface quickly. Of course in this case that means Facebook quick – which could mean anything when it comes to actual real-world show for everyday users.

Have a peek at the timeline below for additional recent acquisitions done by various companies in high power and see if you can detect any recent patterns. It’s time to pick up your favorite group and make them your own! Have at it!
