SwiftKey Cloud syncs your keyboard profile, includes trending phrases (video)

SwiftKey Cloud syncs your keyboard profile, includes trending phrases video

Here’s something we’ve all been wanting for some time. SwiftKey Cloud is launching today with a bunch of new functionality including — you guessed it — cloud backup and synchronization across multiple devices. By keeping your keyboard profile and settings online, you no longer have to re-teach Swiftkey your typing habits if you upgrade to a new tablet or lose your phone. Trending phrases is another new feature which analyzes relevant and localized phrases that are trending on social networks and other media and adds them daily to the keyboard’s vocabulary. It supports US / UK English and eleven other languages at launch, with more coming in the future. Finally, SwiftKey Cloud makes its easier than before to personalize your keyboard by connecting it with your GMail, Facebook, Twitter and now Yahoo! mail accounts. We’ve been using the beta for about a day now and everything’s working as advertised. Check out the gallery below, then it the break for the promo video and PR.

Moto X Android software features confirmed by DROID lineup

If you’re anxiously anticipating the release of Motorola’s common hero smartphone Moto X and like the idea of confirming specifications before the device itself is revealed in full, today is your lucky day. What we’ve seen today in the reveal of three new Motorola smartphones with DROID branding for Verizon is the re-appearance of a few features that’d previously been tipped for the Moto X. They’ll carry ever-so-slightly different user interfaces, but will they keep the same Android-deep features?

imaga

Gesture to Launch Camera

As we saw in a leaked video earlier this month and as indicated by Motorola’s own Dennis Woodside back in May, Moto X will be able to detect when you take it out of your pocket, then will be able to activate its built-in camera with a flick of your wrist.

“The [Moto X] knows when it is in my pocket, it knows when I take it out of my pocket. I might want to do something, I might want to take a picture, so it fires up the camera.” Dennis Woodside for Motorola

Today Verizon’s new DROID line hints at a similar bit of functionality. They suggest that you’ll be able to “quickly launch the 10-megapixel camera with a simple gesture”, just the same. This indicates that there are two possibilities, the first being Google adding this flick feature to Android itself, therefor moving it to their Nexus line not too far into the future. The second possibility is that this feature will be Motorola’s own, and will only appear on Motorola smartphone (until hacking can commence.)

Camera Interface

This morning we saw a leak of what was called a Moto X camera interface. There we saw what very well could appear on a Nexus device and not look out of place in the least. Many of these same images appeared on-screen at this week’s Verizon event introducing the phones, shown as Motorola’s new UI for cameras on all devices.

It’s shown again on Verizon’s purchase page for the DROID MINI in short. They’ve also reminded us there that the device “helps you take better photos in low-light environments” – that kind of power comes from the device’s processor, but it’s very possible the same claims will be made of the Moto X.

Always On Voice Commands

Back in June of 2013, Qualcomm (with LG) revealed that they’d be bringing on “Always On Voice Commands” in their next-generation processing architecture. We’ve heard from Qualcomm earlier in the year that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 brought this ability natively, then we heard about Android’s Open Mic.

goodmorning

It was leaked as part of the hands-on video shown earlier this month of the Moto X, and here once again we’re seeing the exact same user interface appearing on the new DROID lineup.

“When Droid Mini is on, it’s ready. Command this smartphone without touching it, even when it’s asleep. Use voice commands to get directions or open a Mobile Hotspot.” – Verizon

So don’t expect that bit of functionality to be limited to Moto X, not by any measure. Instead we may very well see not one whole heck of a lot of Motorola-centric software appearing on the Moto X when it’s formally revealed on August 1st at all. Not unless Google has something up their sleeves for reveal tomorrow morning!

And don’t forget that fancy super-minimal notifications screen while the device is sleeping, either.

“The low-power notification system displays alerts so you can avoid constantly waking your phone.” – Verizon

We’re to understand that Motorola has formulated a way to only light up a portion of the display to show these notes, saving energy as they do so. Stay tuned!

‘OK Google Now’ comes to Verizon’s 2013 Droid trio

'OK Google Now' comes to Verizon's 2013 Droid trio

If you’re anything like us, you’ve been wringing your hands jealously at the few thousand Google Glass-enabled humans wandering around commanding “OK Glass” as their bidding is done. We’d like to say that the solution we’ve found is to give everyone a free set of Google’s latest indulgence, Oprah-style, but that’s not the case — instead, Verizon’s new trio of Droid phones enables very similar voice-powered functionality on its Droid Mini, Ultra and Maxx handsets.

Employing Google’s popular (and delightful) Now app, Droid owners can enact a variety of (unnamed) operations, including waking up the Droid by saying “OK Google Now.” It’s also targeted at folks who are prone to losing their mobiles, as the command, “OK Google Now, call my Droid” will do just that. It’s also possible that people nearby will think you’re a crazy person, but perhaps they already did considering you’re prone to losing such an expensive and important device to your life, eh?

The Verizon-created software enhancements don’t stop there, with the trio also getting “Touchless Controls” and “Active Display”; the duo apparently work together to “let users make calls, send texts, get directions, play music, set a reminder and preview notifications hands-free without having to unlock the phone, giving Droid users a whole new way of interacting with their phones.” All three phones are available for pre-order starting today and arrive at Verizon starting on August 20th (the Mini lands August 29th).

IndieCade teams with Oculus Rift for ‘VR Jam,’ a game dev competition culminating this October

The Oculus Rift sure is super, super neat, but outside of mods to existing games, it’s still a bit light in the custom-made software department. And that’s exactly why Oculus is ponying up $50K in prizes and teaming up with IndieCade this October for a game jam competition specifically meant to bolster that software support. One lucky dev / team will snag the grand prize of $10K and a chance to debut their game at this October’s IndieCade Festival in Los Angeles — they’ll also head out to Orange County to meet with the team at Oculus, including wunderkind Palmer Luckey.

Should you wish to get in on the VR-centric action, you’ve got the following three weeks to get things going (starting August 2nd and ending on August 25th). And if you don’t have one of Oculus’ Rift dev kits just yet, you’ll have access to playtesting at various “playtest hubs” set up worldwide (NYC and LA locations are the only two confirmed thus far, with “more locations to be announced soon”). For the full stipulations on the contest, head below.

Google’s Street View takes you up Mount Fuji, crampon free

Mount Fuji is the next stop on Google's Street View tour of touristic sites

In contrast to its happy visits to the Eiffel Tower and Burj Khalifa, Street View’s exploration of Dead Island may have given you the wrong impression of Japan. Luckily, one of the country’s most picturesque symbols, Mount Fuji, was recently scaled by what must be some of Mountain View’s most athletic trekkers. The fruits of the 12,400-foot climb and incessant photo stops are 14,000 separate panoramas, including many sunrise shots only available to diligent night climbers. They’re now live on Maps, so hit the source or panorama after the break for a far less taxing peek.

Alibaba develops Smart TV OS, will use it to sell you things

Image

As much as we enjoyed the decade we spent vegging out in front of the shopping channel, we had hoped that the internet had put such days behind us. Not so, thanks to Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, which has developed its own Smart TV OS, separate to Aliyun, in the hope of pumping even more cash out of our wallets. Developed in collaboration with Wasu Media, the duo will launch a set-top box later in the year, and are in talks with companies like Cisco, Haier and Allwinner to produce compatible devices. While customers will be able to use smartphones to stream media and control their TVs, they’ll probably be strong-armed into buying apps, shopping at the Alibaba-owned Juhuasuan and even making utility payments via the company’s Alipay platform. Looks like we’ve got no choice but to finally buy that noiseless karaoke microphone we’ve been avoiding all these years.

Flipboard brings magazines to the web, launches ‘Big Ideas’

Flipboard brings magazines to the web, launches 'Big Ideas'

By now you’re probably familiar with user-created magazines on Flipboard, a feature that was introduced for iOS back in March and added to Android in May. Starting today, you’ll be able to enjoy Flipboard magazines on the web, including access to the By Our Readers section. This web edition even lets users with Flipboard accounts subscribe to magazines and “flip” stories right from within the browser. While the mobile app is still the best way to fully experience Flipboard, the web edition supports Chrome, Firefox, Safari and IE9+ in 11 languages. Moreover, the company is introducing “Big Ideas”, a new category in the Flipboard Content Guide which “celebrates innovative ideas, great speeches, industry thought leaders and inspirational organizations.” Take a look the gallery below and find the PR after the break.

Fresh Paint finds its way to Windows Phone 8 devices

DNP Fresh Paint finds its way to Windows Phone 8

Fresh Paint, the digital art app born on Windows 8, has finally migrated to mobile devices, and starting today, aspiring artists running Windows Phone 8 can fiddle with its brushes to their hearts’ content. This new, simplified version doesn’t make any major departures from the Windows 8 application; you can still mix pigments to create custom hues, share your creations via text, e-mail and SkyDrive and add filters to your photos to make them look like paintings or sketches. It’s worth noting that WP8 doesn’t support styluses, so you’ll have to make do with finger painting or a capacitive stylus without pressure sensitivity. To download the free app, head over to Windows Phone store, linked below.

SkyDrive brings offline file access in Windows 8.1 update

SkyDrive brings offline functionality in Windows 81 update

Tired of needing the pesky internet for all your cloud-related, Microsoft-hosted files? Tire no more, as SkyDrive in Windows 8.1 adds the ability to make files available offline across your SkyDrive-enabled devices by simply clicking a button. After enabling said functionality, those files will become available across your devices even when you’re away from the information superhighway (perhaps in the rural roads of Maine, per our recent experiences).

We took a deep dive into Windows 8.1 in late June, exploring the SkyDrive functionality as well as a whole mess of other features — you can find that piece right here. Windows 8.1 will arrive for the Windows 8 loyalists in the coming months (starting in August), but a preview version is available right now.

Aereo bringing online TV to Utah on August 19th

Aereo bringing online TV to Utah on August 19th

Online TV streaming service Aereo is going Manifest Destiny and headed westward, specifically to the fine state of Utah. The service is set to launch statewide on August 19th, just ahead of its September launch in Chicago. “Whether you live in Salt Lake City, St. George or Ogden,” the company’s PR announcement reads, indicating that the service isn’t localized to any one major metropolitan area (like with previous rollouts).

Should you self-identify as a “Utahn” and have interest in getting signed up, you can pre-register at Aereo’s main site and get “priority access” when the service launches next month. For a look at which networks will be offered, head below for the official word from Aereo.
