The Engadget Interview: Mozilla Firefox VP Johnathan Nightingale

The Engadget Interview Mozilla Firefox VP Johnathan Nightingale

Talk to those high up at Mozilla and they’ll tell you that the platform war for third place is a waste of time; that Windows Phone and BlackBerry are as doomed as each other, because developers will never, ever be interested in the “five percent”. That’s not to say there isn’t room for a rebellious alternative, but the way Mozilla sees it, such an option has already been available since the beginning. It’s not another proprietary ecosystem, but something that spans all ecosystems: namely, the web itself, in all its open and hackable glory.

On the other hand, Johnathan Nightingale, VP of Firefox Engineering, acknowledges that most of his estimated 450 million users don’t care a jot for this type of sermonizing. All they want is a good browser, which means Nightingale is in a constant “fight” with Chrome and IE over market share and new features. With Firefox OS barely off the ground (and full of uncertainty), and with no iOS relationship to speak of either, it falls to Firefox for Windows, Mac and Android to wage this war, and if you read on you’ll discover why Nightingale thinks these browsers will win — even when they may appear to be losing.

Apple’s WWDC 2013 keynote to be streamed live on Apple TV (update: now on Apple’s Events page, too)

Apple's WWDC 2013 keynote livestream makes appearance on Apple TV

A new channel has just popped up on Apple TV for its WWDC 2013 Keynote, meaning that a livestream of the big event will be available for viewing there — just like last time. The HD stream will kick off at 10AM Pacific time, and there’s a chance you’ll see it on Apple’s Events page as well, if history repeats itself. You can also catch past extravaganzas at either spot (see the More Coverage link), and naturally, we’ll have a full liveblog of our own — so there’s no chance you’ll miss any of the fun.

Update: The WWDC 2013 Keynote livestream link has now arrived to Apple’s Events page as well (at the source, below), though you’ll need to be on Safari 4 with OS X 10.6 or Safari on iOS 4.2 at a minimum to watch it.

Intel’s supposed ‘Obsidian’ UI for Tizen gets leaked, swiped and doubted

obsidian

The pure version of Tizen 2.0 is far from finalized, yet there already seems to be an alternative skin designed to sit on top of it. While Intel’s chips are currently capable of powering the new open source OS, the chip company is reportedly working on its own overlaid UI, known as Obsidian. Ars Technica got its hands on two videos of it in action, featuring notably flat and square icons compared to the circular ones we’ve seen in the pure version. There’s a consistent bottom strip of three soft keys for calls, messaging and contacts, and a tilt action for icons and contacts when a notification in an app is received. According to Ars, Intel may also bring the aesthetic to Android, surprising as that may sound. You can get a detailed look at its present state at the source link, while we scratch our heads asking “really?” and “why?”

iOS 7 leak details flatter, matte graphics ahead of WWDC 2013 reveal

Apple’s “flat” iOS 7 refresh has been previewed, with reportedly eyes-on leaks tipping a more matte finish to the iconography along with the potential for two different color schemes. The new interface, apparently demonstrated in early beta form to 9to5Mac and then mocked-up to bypass Apple’s watermarking, uses the same slimline font as we’ve already

Mac- and Windows-based shutterbugs can download the completed image management app today, either at no extra charge through a Creative Cloud subscription or $149 for a stand-alone version ($79 for an upgrade). Buyers get the same core updates no matter how much they spend, including an Advanced Healing Brush for removing objects and Smart Previews that let travelers leave their original files at home. Behance publishing is also part of the revision.
