Adobe to Release “Light” Online Version of Photoshop

This article was written on March 01, 2007 by CyberNet.

AdobephotoshopAdobe recently announced their plans to release an online version of Photoshop, their popular image editing application.  It will be a “light version” made using Flex, and is expected in the next six months.

Because it is a “light” version, I’m assuming that it will be no different that some of the online photo editors already available.  People like Photoshop because of the range of editing options that it offers.  A lighter version certainly wouldn’t be able to handle all of the complex things that people turn to Photoshop to do.

Instead of aiming this product towards the people who already use the application, it’s aimed towards the home/casual user who wants to touch up a picture before uploading it to a social network, or sending it off via email to friends and family.

The online version will be free, and Adobe plans on supporting it with ads to make money.  This sends up a red flag to photo-editing startups. With everything going online nowadays, this is definitely a smart move for Adobe. While the daily, professional users will stick to the stand alone option, it will be opened to new users.

Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen says that while it’s a lighter, lower-end product, they still expect it to be of better quality than other free alternatives (Picasa?). They’re hoping that the brand they’ve already established will help them out. Chizen says:

“If we offered a host-based version of Photoshop that’s Photoshop-branded (and is) potentially better than Picasa, you’d probably go the Photoshop route because of your belief in the Photoshop brand and the quality associated with the brand,”

There’s certainly issues to think about with any online photo editing service like dealing with the download/upload speeds for high resolution photos.  Also, would you be able to keep your photos private? Access to the Internet is not always there, so there’d be no editing on the road.

With this announcement, I’m sure many companies and startups are feeling the pressure. Microsoft is probably one of them. Everybody around them is taking applications online, which makes me wonder if/when will Microsoft take some of their applications online?

Real-Time Tab Previews in Firefox

This article was written on September 14, 2007 by CyberNet.

Tab Scope Firefox Extension I just came across a Firefox extension that is one of the coolest I’ve seen in quite awhile. It’s called Tab Scope and it brings real-time tab previews to the Firefox browser. Well, it’s actually a step beyond just a preview because you can fully interact with the page (click links, scroll, etc…).

After using this for just 10-minutes I feel that it has made me more productive, and I now consider it to be a must-have extension. Here are the features that Tab Scope brings to the table:

  • Real-time tab previews of the page contents — you can watch the page load right from the preview!
  • Navigate (Back/Forward/Reload/Stop) directly through the tab preview
  • Scroll pages or frames in preview with mouse wheel
  • Use the magnifying glass to enlarge the tab preview for easier navigation
  • Click links or buttons directly in preview

In the options you can configure things such as the size for the tab preview for both before and after you click the magnifying glass. Depending on the preview size that you choose this can drastically keep you from switching back and forth between tabs! Throw on the ReloadEvery extension and you’ve got a killer combination!

FileSeek: Use Regular Expressions to Search File Contents

This article was written on November 04, 2010 by CyberNet.

search file contents-1.png

Most current operating systems include some sort of indexed file searching functionality, and with that you can often get instant results back on any query you perform. As I pointed out a few weeks ago those tools still leave some things to be desired… especially when dealing with searching the contents of files for some particular text.

FileSeek falls in line with the MariusSoft File Searcher in that it does a great job searching the contents of any file you desire. Both are free utilities that don’t require any files to be indexed prior to kicking off a search, and they are pretty fast at getting results. Both also let you use regular expressions to search for text in a file, but FileSeek is the only one that has Windows Explorer context menu integration. If you regularly perform file searches that can become quite useful.

Here are some of the features highlighted by the developer:

  • Search for text string matches inside any kind of file
  • Match Regular Expressions inside any kind of file
  • Search a folder and all of it’s sub-folders
  • Match 1 or more file patterns, like *.jpg, file?.txt or anything else you can imagine
  • Exclude 1 or more file patterns from your search, like *.exe or *.dll
  • Filter results by the last modified date
  • Never indexes files in the background

When you go to grab the download you may overlook the tiny text underneath the download button that offers a version without an installer. That’s the version I tend to lean towards, but you can always grab the installer version if you want all the shortcuts and stuff to be created for you. It’s free either way you decide to go.
