Facebook‘s got a fresh update for its main iOS app, and version 5.4 has some pleasant additions coming your way. The social network is throwing in the ability to send voice messages (which has been available on Android for a little over a week, and on iOS through Messenger) and share video recordings directly through the app, and it’s also enhanced functionality in the Nearby tab as well. We’re still all waiting impatiently for Graph Search on the mobile front, but we can at least enjoy some new ways of showing the world what we’re up to. Head to the source to download the update.

YouView software update adds surround-sound, faster boot times and grouped recording

Rocking a YouView box? You’ll shortly be in line for a software bump that’ll give you a few handy tweaks. The update will speed up the device’s boot-from-standby time, let you group recordings by series so you can watch ’em box-set style and pump out surround-sound audio if you’ve got the right gear. It’ll also provide a few useful UI tweaks, like offering the option to hide BBC red button prompts, letting you roll live TV backwards by 15 seconds or forwards by 60 seconds. It’ll be available on Humax-branded boxes over the next few weeks, followed by the TalkTalk branded units shortly afterward.

Apple updates Final Cut Pro X with slew of new features, now available for download

Amidst all the announcements made at the California Theatre earlier today, Apple very quietly pushed out a fresh version of its famed (and at times controversial) video editing software, Final Cut Pro. Inside v10.0.6 users can find an array of new additions and improvements that will most certainly be welcomed with open arms by the FCPX crowd, making this the most notable update since bundling in those multicam and broadcast monitoring features. Among these new traits are RED camera support for native REDCODE RAW editing, the ability to add freeze frames to the timeline with a simple keystroke, novel audio controls for use while tinkering with multicam clips and a revamped “Share” interface for exporting projects. The Final Cut Pro update can be downloaded now from the usual spot, and, of course, it comes at no extra cost for those who’ve already shelled out the $300. Apple says no Java for you, removes plugin from browsers on OS X 10.7 and up

Apple has recently released a Mac update for OS X Lion and Mountain Lion that removes its Java plugin from all OS X browsers. If you install the update, you’ll find a region labeled “Missing plug-in” in place of a Java applet; of course, Apple can’t stop you from clicking on it to download a Java plug-in directly from Oracle. The Cupertino-based company had previously halted pre-installing Java in OS X partially due to the exploitable factors of the platform, so this update signifies further distancing from Larry Ellison’s pride and joy.

If you’re a social media junkie and TweetDeck is your pusherman, you may or may not be happy to know that the Twitter-owned application has received a cosmetic update — one which inches the platform further away from the post-buyout product that power users once knew and loved. While subtle, the latest software bump brings enhanced, adjustable fonts and a brand new “lighter theme” that features dark text against a light background. The update is now available for Windows, Chrome and Mac web users. As for you app fans, Chrome and Windows requires a restart, while Mac users will need to visit the App Store. Those looking to keep it retro can always get their download on at OldApps.

Sony starts delivering Ice Cream Sandwich update to Xperia go, Xperia U and Xperia sola

Well, it looks like Sony’s in-house software developers have decided this is the perfect week to deliver delicious treats to a large portion of the company’s mobile lineup. Not long after outing updates for the Tablet S and Xperia Ion (in the US), the electronics giant is now bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to handsets such as the Xperia go, Xperia U and Xperia sola. The refresh itself brings a slew of novel traits to the trio of Xperia slabs, including a “new way to experience” music, photos and video, improvements to the lockscreen, the ability to resize widgets and the addition of a “multitasking” button. While the standout features remain the same across the board, the Xperia sola does get an added bonus in the form of a so-called, self-explanatory glove mode — which is made possible by the device’s “floating touch” technology. Sony does note that availability of the 4.0 upgrade will vary by market and, not surprisingly, carrier requirements. Let’s just hope you get to enjoy the changes soon.

Sony Tablet S gets chunky update: better multi-tasking and IR, ‘guest mode’, new media apps (correction)

The original Tablet S has already absorbed a few interesting updates and now it’s getting one more: devices are waking up to an Android 4.0.3 update that brings significant additions like a Guest Mode for creating restricted user accounts, revamped media and social aggregation apps, and six assignable macro buttons on the IR Remote Control app. Sony has also bolstered its Small Apps function, allowing you to overlay a browser, IR remote and other utilities in a window on top of another app. What this update isn’t is Jelly Bean, which is headed to the Tablet S’s similarly-named replacement, the Xperia Tablet S.
Correction: We originally confused the Tablet S with the newer Xperia-branded model. Thanks to all who spotted the error.
