Nintendo’s pushing out version 4.0 of its Wii U system software, and it’s bringing a few unexpected — yet welcome — changes. Ironically, tweaks to how the hardware handles titles from The Big N’s last home console headline the update. Folks taking Wii games for a spin will now be able to do so using just the GamePad’s screen, and enjoy Dolby Pro Logic II surround output — though you’ll still need a Wii remote to play. Iwata and Co. have also rolled in an image sharing tool that mirrors the one on the 3DS, which lets gamers share screenshots on Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter. With the fresh code in tow, demos from Nintendo can be downloaded automatically and a variety of USB keyboards are supported, to boot. The box’s internet browser also got some attention, as it’s been bolstered with the ability to open PDF files and remember user login details for web sites. If you haven’t already updated your Apple TV to version 6.0, you’ll have to wait: Cupertino has discreetly pulled the software upgrade. Although no official statement has been made, users on Twitter have been reporting connectivity issues and accidental resets throughout the weekend. An unlucky few even saw their devices bricked entirely. Now, manually checked boxes report that version 5.3 is “up to date.” There’s no word yet when a more stable version of the software will be available for download, but when it is, it should bring users the AirPlay from iCloud support (for devices running iOS 7) and iTunes Radio access Apple promised on Friday.

Perhaps this is what Samsung meant when it said it would addressing GS4 storage capacity concerns through “software optimization.” An update for the flagship has begun hitting Snapdragon 600-loaded handsets in Germany, and it enables an option to move apps over to the SD card, freeing up some of that precious on-board storage. Other changes, as noted by mobiFlip and SamMobile, include a partially see-through notification bar when using a custom wallpaper, new camera firmware with an HDR video recording option and an “increased legibility” display mode. S Planner and settings icons apparently have a slightly new look, and a Smart Pause toggle has been added to the drop-down list. Samsung may have achieved a modicum of optimization, too: the update reportedly claws back an extra 0.8GB of internal storage. The update will hopefully see a wider release soon, but make sure you’re connected to WiFi before you accept any OTA prompts — it’s a whopping 366MB.

The first of Nintendo’s planned Wii U firmware updates went live just yesterday, bringing a much needed speed boost to software load times. And in that short time since, Nintendo’s also made its retro-gaming Virtual Console portal available to users, effectively bypassing the need to boot into the Wii emulator for access. The downside to this new, belated convenience is that users will have to re-download any previously purchased Virtual Console titles, though that additional cost is relatively low at $1.00- $1.50 for NES and SNES games, respectively. Unfortunately, you’ll still have to wait a bit longer for those beloved Game Boy Advance and N64 classics to make their way to the VC, as Nintendo plans to include those games sometime “in the future.” Still, with band-aid number one out of the way for the ailing console and a host of tried-and-true classics now easily accessible, Wii U owners have a little something to tide them over until that late summer Pikmin 3 launch.

Last month, Sprint served up a dose of Jelly Bean for its variant of LG’s Optimus G, and today it appears that AT&T is following suit. We’ve received a flurry of tips and screenshots like the one above denoting that Ma Bell is slowly starting to trickle out Android 4.1.2 to its Optimus G owners. Seeking confirmation, we’ve reached out to AT&T and will provide an update of our own once we receive official word on the matter. Until then, if you’re rocking an Optimus G on Big Blue’s network, now might be the time to manually check your device for new software.

Update: It’s official — the Jelly Bean rollout has begun on Big Blue’s network. Along with the usual upgrades associated with the OS, AT&T’s over-the-air patch enables Isis mobile payments for those who happen to live in Austin or Salt Lake City.
