Sonos PLAY:1 leaks in full
Posted in: Today's ChiliSonos‘s entry-level Play:1 speaker surprise was spoiled by Target, and now we can see what’s going on inside the box, too. Target isn’t processing any sales until October 13th, but SlashGear reader Steve managed to pick up a Play:1 ahead of time through eBay, and has shared some photos of the $199.99 streaming speaker with […]
Last month, we learned via FCC filing
Sonos‘ upcoming – and currently unannounced – Play:1 speaker, the $199.99 entry-level model to the streaming media range, has been caught on sale early. A Target shopper flagged up the prematurely stocked speaker to The Verge, having spotted it in their local store already on the shelves in black and white. Full details of the […]
Sonos is primed to expand the lineup of speakers for its wireless audio system. As usual
Sonos’ Play:3 speaker ran away with our editors’ choice award back in 2011, so there’s probably a little pressure on the device that’s just turned up at the FCC. Ahead of any official announcement, the Play:1 has been outed toting 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, all thanks to our boys in blue lab coats. Now that the hardware has been deemed fit for human consumption, we can expect some more solid news in the near future. The only question left, therefore, is if “1” is above or below “3” in the minds of Sonos’ marketing department.

Multi-platform home automation hub Revolv has gone up for preorder, offering a $299 way to harness your Sonos, Hue lighting, Yale automatic locks, and more, all from a single app. The smart home base-station – previously known as Mobiplug – packs a total of seven radios so as to communicate with a broad variety of […]
To date, Sonos owners have had to use iOS to stream music directly from a mobile device. They’ll have a little more choice as of today: Sonos has updated its Android app to support direct streaming. If a device has a local audio library, the controller software can send tracks, albums, playlists and podcasts to any Sonos-equipped speaker in the home. Listeners with the most recent Sonos firmware just need to grab the updated Android app from the source link to start playing.

Sonos is one of the go-to companies for wireless streaming options, and Android users can finally get in on the fun, thanks to an update to the Sonos Controller app. The update now enables users to play music and audio stored on their Android phone or tablet anywhere that they have a Sonos wireless speaker or player.
Luckily, the app supports Android 2.1 and higher, so most if not all Android users should be able to use the new app and stream their local music to a Sonos device. All you have to do in order to get the update running is update the app from Google Play, make sure all the devices are on the same WiFi network, and then you’ll be able to play your music stored on your Android device.
Once you have the app updated, there will be a new menu called “This Mobile Device.” Tapping on that will bring up the expected categories, including Artists, Albums, Genres, Tracks and Playlists, as well as Podcasts. The app isn’t completely fleshed out, though. We noticed some issues with podcasts showing up in different categories other than the Podcasts category.
Another caveat is that music downloaded directly from the Google Play Store can’t be played through the Sonos app right away. You have to download them from Google Play to your computer, and then transfer them to your Android device’s Music folder in order to get them to work with Sonos. This is kind of tedious, but hopefully Sonos can find a way around it sooner or later.

If you’re peddling wireless speaker systems that offer internet streaming support, it’s only natural to want to get cozy with Spotify. Sonos’ latest update for its iOS and Android Controller apps does just that, and you can now log-in to the streaming service using your Facebook account. What’s more, version 4.1 makes handling mixtapes easier, as you can access, edit or build new Spotify playlists from within the app. Revising your Sonos playlists, or creating new ones altogether, has also been tweaked so you no longer need to involve the ‘now playing’ queue. Lastly, the alarm function can now be set to wake you with the sounds of your preferred subscription service, taking you straight from dreaming to streaming.
