Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet Review: Hardware Triumph, Software Facepalm

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet Review: Hardware Triumph, Software Facepalm

Last year, the original Xperia Z Tablet was one of our absolute favorite tablets . It was so wonderfully thin and light, plus waterproofiness? Fantastic. But the laggy software Sony put on top kind of knee-capped its potential. This year, the hardware is even better. Bordering on masterful! But some lessons Sony just refuses to learn.

Sony Pictures Register BioShock Movie Domains

Sony Pictures Register BioShock Movie DomainsGiven the steampunk nature of BioShock, we can totally see how the movie might be pretty appealing to moviemakers, although oddly enough we haven’t really heard anything about the possibility of a movie, at least until now. It seems that Sony Pictures has recently registered for a trio of domain names: bioshock-movie.com, bioshock-movie.net, and bio-shock.net.

The latter doesn’t really tell us much although the former two domain name registrations seems to suggest that Sony Pictures could be interested in making a BioShock movie, or are at least looking to protect the IP in the event that a movie is made. Of course it is possible that the domain registrations are fake as we have seen in the past, but at the same time it’s not so far-fetched.

After all ever since the first BioShock game was released, there have been talks about turning it into a movie, but so far this is pretty much the most concrete “evidence” we have to date. While we’re sure that BioShock fans are looking forward to the idea of a movie, we remain a bit skeptical. Video games turned to movies have typically never fared very well.

In fact a professor at a university even offered up his opinion on why video games that are made into movies tend to fail. In any case BioShock fans should probably not get their hopes up just yet, but we’ll definitely keep our eyes peeled. In the meantime are you guys excited at the possibility?

Sony Patents Self-Washing Robot

Sony Patents Self Washing RobotI would suppose that Sony’s most famous robot release would be their beloved Aibo, which happens to be a robotic pooch that was the bomb back in the day, although the $1,900 price tag back then would make any potential customer think more than just twice as to whether to splurge that kind of money on what is essentially an expensive toy. I think that even when we factor in inflation today, $1,900 can still do plenty for the average man on the street who is more interested in bread and butter issues. Well, it seems that Sony is not quite out of the robotics scene just yet, having filed for a patent that will focus on a camera lens that could be used in a robot hand.

So far, it remains rather tricky to determine as to how this particular patent is going to be implemented, although the patent filing was accompanied by images of a few robots, where one of them can be seen above. It looks like NEC’s PaPeRo from certain angles, and the idea put forward by Sony seems to point to this robot being able to wash itself whenever it becomes dirty, allowing it to maintain itself while helping humans out in everyday chores.

Sounds convenient, no? This patent sees Sony crossing their fingers that such a robot can clean its sensitive camera eyes alone, and know just when it is due for a cleaning. This is made possible by comparing images snapped across time to figure out whether there is grit and grease building up. I do wonder whether the Transformers have such inclinations…

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition To Get Android 4.4.3 KitKat (Rumor)

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition To Get Android 4.4.3 KitKat (Rumor)In the past week, we did hear about how Sprint mentioned about Android 4.4.3 KitKat for the Nexus 5 smartphone, which leads to the question as to which particular device is going to be the next one to receive this particular mobile operating system update. There is every chance that the Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play edition is all up for it, at least according to the Bluetooth SIG.

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play edition is a device that falls under the phablet category, sporting a 6.4” display, and it has been certified for some Android 4.4.3 KitKat action. For those who want definite proof on the Bluetooth SIG, it is not there, but rather, one would stumble upon a reference to the “Togari GPE”.

Togari happens to be the code name for the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, while GPE stands for Google Play edition. As for the software version listed, it happens to be the KTU72.S1.3013, which is widely believed to represent Android 4.4.3 KitKat. Google Play edition smartphones rely on a stock Android OS, which makes it faster to update compared to unlocked and carrier models. After all, these updates are sent out straight from Google without having to go through any intermediary.

Sony a6000 Review: A Solid Mirrorless Camera That's a Small Step Up

Pretty much all mirrorless cameras—Fujifilm X, Samsung NX, to name a couple—with APS-C size sensors can take a damn fine picture these days. The a6000 does its best to stand out with a pinch of style and updated tech, but it’s still largely the same as the camera it’s replacing, 2012’s NEX-6 .

The Xbox One Still Lags Behind The PS4

Xbox Controller Titanfall was supposed to change it all, but it didn’t work. So far, Microsoft announced that it has shipped 5 million Xbox One units to retailers. In comparison, Sony has sold 7 million PS4 units to customers. It doesn’t look good for Microsoft as the company doesn’t even say how many people actually bought an Xbox One. Microsoft’s announcement fits well with NPD’s… Read More
