Sony’s QX10/QX100 Could Be Making Its Way Onto Tablets

xperia_tablet_qxBack in 2013, Sony announced the QX10 and the QX100 which were essentially camera lenses that you could attach to your smartphone. The great thing about the lenses was that it did not favor any particular device or platform, meaning that it worked on iPhones as well as non-Sony Android devices as well. Perhaps looking to further put an end to device discrimination, it seems that Sony could be considering releasing a mount for the QX10/QX100 that would make it compatible with tablets as well! Thanks to an image snagged by the folks at Xperia Blog, it shows how the QX10/QX100 could be strapped to the back of a tablet.

Sony has yet to make an official announcement but apparently this new mount is expected to arrive only in April and will be available in Japan first before making its way to the rest of the world. While our tablets are starting to come with better cameras these days, it has become something of a tech faux pas to use your tablet to snap photos or record videos, so we’re not sure if strapping a camera to the back of a 10-inch tablet will help make it better. Then again the larger display of a tablet makes it easy to perform edits so it is understandable why some people choose to use their tablets for such purposes. In any case what do you guys think? Would you be caught strapping the QX10/QX100 to the back of your tablet?

Sony Xperia Z2 And Castor Tablet Spotted At The FCC

sony-xperia-z1-review-6Come MWC 2014, we are expecting to see a handful of new devices from Sony. The company did take off the wraps for some handsets during CES 2014, such as the Xperia Z1 Compact, but at MWC 2014 many are looking forward to Sony’s next flagship handset, the Xperia Z2 which has also been known by its codename, Sirius. Well thanks to an FCC filing, a certain Sony PM-0740-BV has made an appearance which many are speculating is the Sony Xperia Z2, despite the Xperia Z2’s other model number being the D6503. The device found at the FCC does come with several different LTE bands which would make it compatible with a variety of different carriers in the US, depending on which are enabled.

However apart from the handset sighting, it seems that another Sony device has been spotted at the FCC as well, this time in the form of the TM-0043-BV which has some thinking that it could be the rumored Sony “Castor” tablet. The tablet has been rumored about for a while now and it is expected to see a release in Japan in the second quarter of this year, but an FCC sighting would suggest that a US release could in the cards as well. With the last tablet from Sony being the Xperia Tablet Z from back in 2013, chances are the Castor could be its successor, but we guess more details will be shared come MWC 2014, so check back with us then for more information on either device.

Sony A77 Successor Rumored To Cost €1,200

sony-a77If you were thinking about getting your hands on the Sony A77 or want to upgrade from the A77, you might have heard that there could be a Sony A77 successor in the works. This has been rumored about for a while now and last we heard, it is possible that the A77’s successor could even see a release in June following a rumored announcement in April. That’s well and good but how much could the camera cost? What sort of price tag could we be looking at here? According to the sources of Sony Alpha Rumors, it has been revealed that the price of the A77 will cost €1,200 for the body-only, but unfortunately did not mention how much the kit version will cost, although if we guess had to guess it’d probably be a few hundred Euros extra.

Sony Alpha Rumors believes that the A77’s successor, whose name is currently unknown, will be the only Sony APS-C A-mount camera coming in 2014. We still do not know what sort of specs the A77’s successor will have under the hood but the rumors claim that we can expect some new and exciting hardware, rather than incremental upgrades over its predecessor. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully we will learn more further down the line. In the meantime what do you guys make of the rumored price? Is that something you’d be willing to pay?

Sony Rumored To Buy Nintendo’s DRAM Manufacturing Plant

nintendo-wii-u-gamepadSony, Nintendo, and Microsoft are all competitors in the gaming industry, but it looks like Sony could soon be making a move that could possibly interfere with Nintendo’s business as the rumors are suggesting that Sony could be acquiring the semiconductor plant that is currently producing the DRAM chips used by Nintendo in their Wii U console. According to the reports, the deal is said to be worth ¥7 billion which is around $68 million after conversion. Apparently this deal has been in the works for a while but we guess it could finally be happening.

After the rumored takeover, Sony is expected to further invest ¥20 billion into the operation and will also absorb the existing staff as part of the deal. It is unclear as to what Sony might use the semiconductor plant for, but it seems that it might not have to do with gaming as reports claim that Sony could use the plant to help boost their CMOS smartphone sensor outputs by as much as 30%. Naturally neither Nintendo nor Sony have commented on the alleged acquisition, but at the same time it is said that Nintendo has managed to stockpile the DRAM chips to act as a buffer against any potential shortage.

Sony To Shutdown Four MMOs Later This Year

vanguard7Back in 2013, we reported that Sony would be ending online support for some of their first-party PS3 games. This included Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, and Resistance 3, MAG, SOCOM: Confrontation, and Gran Turismo 5. Well the bad news is that Sony has since announced that they will be closing four of their MMOs in March and July. The MMOs affected include Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Wizardry Online, Free Realms, and Clone Wars Adventures. Apparently there aren’t that many people left playing these games that justifies keeping the servers running, and given that some of the titles are pretty old, we guess it is understandable and it is an eventuality that all MMOs will face at the end.

It also seemed that Sony was done making child-focused games as apparently kids don’t spend enough money on games, and it is also difficult to run a kids games as kids apparently do mean stuff to each other, according to John Smedley during a Reddit AMAA. Free Realms and Clone Wars Adventures are expected to close at the end of March 2014, while Vanguard and Wizardry will close at the end of July. It was also during Smedley’s Reddit AMAA that he confirmed that EverQuest Next will arrive on the Sony PS4.

siriusSo come MWC 2014, Sony is expected to take the wraps off their new flagship smartphone, the Sony Xperia Z2, which has also been referred to as the Sony “Sirius” which is the device’s codename. In any case much like the Xperia Z1, the Xperia Z2 is expected to be somewhat camera-centric with an emphasis placed on the device’s camera abilities, and with that being said, thanks to photos that have made their way online, we can now compare how the Xperia Z2’s camera fares against the likes of its predecessor, the Xperia Z1. Sony’s Credit Rating Cut To “Junk” By Moody’s

    6_sony_logo_w

Bond credit rating agency Moody’s cut the credit rating of Sony from Baa3 to Ba1 with a stable outlook — Ba1 is also just below investment grade. In other words, Sony is considered a speculative investment right now and it will become harder for the company to borrow money.

Today’s downgrade comes from its volatile net profit. Despite many staff cuts, some divisions, such as its PC and TV activities, are still losing money or are barely in the black. Increased competition in these areas are to blame.

“We expect the majority of its core consumer electronics businesses — such as TVs, mobile, digital cameras and personal computers — to continue to face significant downward earnings pressure,” Moody’s wrote in a statement.

Yet, the PlayStation 4 was very well received by the company’s customers and reviewers — 4 million units were sold during the holidays. But newly launched consoles don’t generate a lot of profit because margins are very thin after launch. Though it’s still a very good sign for the long term outlook when it comes to selling games and consoles at a later stage in the product cycle.

Finally, Sony currently has a solid lineup of cameras, but other companies could take the lead, or smartphones could bring down prices.

Sony is also a major movie studio and music label. These divisions are apparently doing well, but it’s very tough to predict the future. The vast majority of the profit generated by a movie comes in the few months that follow its release in theaters. You have to start over every year and release hit after hit.

Standard & Poor’s still rates Sony at BBB, two ranks above junk status, while the company is rated junk by Fitch. Shares are currently trading at 16.03, 4.13 percent below Friday’s closing price. With today’s downgrade, Moody’s also notes that the company shouldn’t expect any rating improvement in the near future.

Sony NEX-6/NEX-7 Successor To Ship In April, Could Cost $1,100 [Rumor]

nex-7We have been hearing rumors about a possible Sony NEX-7 successor for a while now, although when exactly will the camera actually be made a reality remains to be seen. In any case according to the latest rumors from Sony Alpha Rumors, it has been suggested that Sony could be looking to announce new high-end APS-C E-mount cameras that will replace both the NEX-6 and the NEX-7, and that it is rumored to begin shipping on in April following its announcement in February. With the February date, it is possible that Sony will be announcing their new cameras at CP+, a photography-related event that will be taking place in the month of February.

Additional rumors about the possible NEX-6/NEX-7 successor includes its price. According to their tipster, the camera is said to cost around 800 Euro, which is about $1,100 when converted which seems about right for the NEX-7’s successor, although admittedly pretty expensive for such a small device. The camera is also rumored to have a faster AF system, a faster imaging processor, and improved image quality and EVF. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully additional details will be revealed come February. After all it has been a while since Sony announced the NEX-7 and we guess it’s about time that it got updated.
