Sony LittleBigPlanet Karting beta promised soon

Sony wants to let you know that the latest adventure for its easily recognizable Sackboy mascot is heading out to fans soon. And if you can’t wait for it to come to stores, you may be lucky enough to grab an early shot at LittleBigPlanet Karting when it arrives in beta form. Sony is encouraging players to keep an eye on the PlayStation Blog for their chance to get into the beta.

LittleBigPlanet 2 was supposed to be the game that let players create any kind of game they wanted. So, arguably, if you wanted a customizable LittleBigPlanet kart racing experience, you’d be able to create that already. But not everyone has that much time on their hands, so Media Molecule and development partners United Front Games will be bringing Karting to the PS3 as the next LBP entry. LittleBigPlanet is also making its way to the PlayStation Vita platform as well, so the series is still going strong.

A post on the PlayStation Blog described the new game, saying, “Our goal with LBP Karting has been fairly simple – provide a fast-paced experience that captures the best of classic karting gameplay, married with the unbridled creativity of LBP. This new adventure will be accessible to players of all ages and have all of the variety necessary to satisfy both the hardcore and more casual players.” Further details, including release date information, will be released at a later time.

Sony Mobile says Xperia S Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update has issues

Last week, we talked about the Sony Xperia S receiving an Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update that normally, if everything goes well and all the planets are aligned together in perfect fashion, you know for sure that it is going to be smooth sailing. Unfortunately, the Xperia S Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update did run into some snags, where there were folks who had trouble upgrading the firmware. The folks who fell under this category owned Xperia S devices that came with an SI number which Sony had listed down as being ready for the Ice Cream Sandwich update. I guess this boo-boo needs to be corrected, and soon – good thing Sony Mobile has acknowledged the issue, and will be re-releasing the updates soon. Here is what Sony Mobile had to say. (more…)

Sony’s Action Cam prototype is incredibly small, we go fingers-on at CE Week in NYC

Sony's Action Cam prototype is incredibly small, we go fingerson at CE Week in NYC

CE Week isn’t typically a venue for major product introductions, then again neither is Sony’s blog. Last night, we got a sneak peek at the company’s new Action Cam on the aforementioned site, and this morning the Japanese manufacturer dropped the black curtain on what appears to be the very same prototypes used in yesterday’s tease. We almost missed it at Sony’s pint-sized booth at the annual week-long CEA event in New York City — the camera, which has yet to get an official name and model number assignment from Tokyo, is massively smaller than yesterday’s snaps may have implied. The adventure shooter is hidden behind glass, but we did manage to pull it out for a brief inspection, and boy is it tiny.

A variety of mounts were on hand to demonstrate the shooter’s versatility, including a handlebar attachment, helmet holster and some sort of plastic enclosure that could presumably be used to shield the Action Cam from underwater hazards, though Sony declined to confirm. Specification details are also quite spotty at the moment, but we were able to confirm that there will be an Exmor R CMOS image sensor and a wide-angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens on board. Things seem to be quite limited on the controls front, with simple navigation buttons, a Start/Stop toggle, a tiny LCD and stereo mics up front representing the entire bounty of I/O offerings. There also appears to be SD and Memory Stick storage on board, based on familiar logos printed on the jet-black housing. For now, that’s all she wrote — we expect more details as we approach the Action Cam’s official launch in the fall. Flip through the gallery below for a closer look.

Sony Xperia Neo L arrives at the FCC

We have seen our fair share of devices make their way through the hallowed hallways of the FCC nearly every single day, so why not add another to the long list with the Sony Xperia Neo L? Apparently, this particular low-end Xperia smartphone will come with a 4″ display, and will be powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the process. It has been stripped down to the bare basics at the FCC, leaving you with the following details – there will not be any support for LTE or AWS connectivity, although it will carry the standard radios for EDGE / GPRS (850MHz, 1900MHz), GSM (850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 1900MHz) and WCDMA (900MHz, 2100MHz). In layman’s terms, that would mean the Sony Xperia Neo L should be made available over at AT&T and T-Mobile if either carrier decides to offer this phone to the masses. Needless to say, this does seem to shape up to be an entry level/mid-range Android-powered smartphone.

Sony has no definitive plans for Resistance series, says report

If you love playing Resistance, the popular first-person shooter/ third-person shooter video game series developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony, you’ll probably be disappointed (hopefully not) to hear that Sony has no definitive plans for Resistance. In an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine in U.K., Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Online producer Daniel Brooke reportedly said “The Resistance franchise has been exciting to work on. But as for the future, we have no definitive plans.”

So far, there have been five Resistance games – three on PlayStation 3, one on PlayStation Portable, and one on PlayStation Vita. The latest is Resistance: Burning Skies, a spin-off of the series that was launched in May this year and is developed specifically for the PlayStation Vita. With the game’s developers, Insomniac Games, out of the picture following its decision to stop working on it, and Sony saying that it has no definitive plans, the future of the game is bleak. We can’t really say that the series is over. We can only speculate based on Daniel Brooke’s words. The word definitive means final. So, the series could go on, but apparently Sony does not have a final plan yet.

Sony flashes new high-definition wearable video camera

What a fine day it is. Sony has just sent us a preview of its new action camera that apparently has yet to be named. Sony was kind enough to give us a first look at the device. It’s actually a high-definition wearable video camera that is tiny and lightweight. Sony said that it will house Sony’s trademark SteadyShot image stabilization technology. In case you did not know, SteadyShot uses motion sensors to ensure that images will remain motionless as much as possible. Sony’s new “action camera” will also sport an Exmor R CMOS image sensor and an ultra-wide angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens.

“That means, whether you’re shredding major powder, jumping out of a plane, or kayaking through an epic waterfall, you’re capturing super high-quality video of it to show off to your family and friends. And there’ll be ruggedized and waterproof housings available so the camera can do its job in even the most extreme environments,” Sony said. Unfortunately, details about the camera are fairly limited, as it’s only a preview. However, the folks over at Sony promised that they will keep us updated. So, stay tuned as we bring you more updates.
