PS4 Has No MP3 Playback and DLNA Streaming: Backlash Awaits

When Microsoft outlined the restrictive lending and always online requirement for the Xbox One earlier this year, it was hit with a wave of hatred so hard that the company was forced to eat its words. Now it’s Sony’s turn to be on the wrong end of publicity, albeit for less offensive reasons. In its recently posted Ultimate FAQ for the PlayStation 4, Sony explicitly states that the console won’t support MP3 playback and streaming via DLNA.

As with the shelved always-online requirement on the Xbox One, part of the reason why gamers are so upset about the loss of two supplementary features is because the previous console had them. I myself used my PS3 to stream videos from my iMac using the excellent PS3 Media Server app. Others used Plex. Bottomline, it’s a downgrade. So why would Sony subtract those features? A possible answer would be to push its streaming services for both music and video, which are both accessible on the PS4 out of the box. Assuming you have an Internet connection. And that the streaming service is available in your country.

In an attempt to quell disappointed customers, Sony Computer Entertainment President Shuhei Yoshida stated on Twitter that he will discuss it with the console’s development team “for future consideration.” Hopefully that means a patch and not the PS5.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra CyanogenMod 10.2 Nightly Builds Rolling Out

Sony Xperia Z Ultra CyanogenMod 10.2 Nightly Builds Rolling Out

After months of endless rumors, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra was announced back in June. Its certainly one of the biggest smartphones that Sony has made, with respect to its sheer size, as it touts a 6.4 inch full HD display. If you don’t like running Sony’s customized Android 4.2 user interface on that gigantic display, there’s now a alternative available which brings an experience that’s much closer to AOSP. CyanogenMod 10.2 nightly builds have started to roll out for the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, not only bringing a refined user interface, but also an updated version of Android.

That’s right, CyanogenMod 10.2 for Sony Xperia Z Ultra brings Android 4.3. Installing the custom ROM shouldn’t be much of a hassle since Sony usually doesn’t lock down its bootloader, if you have a custom recovery installed, you’re good to go. The relevant ROM for Sony Xperia Z Ultra is available under the “togari” codename, it weighs in at 217MB. There’s just one build available as of now, but more stable builds are likely to be released in the near future. Since nightly builds can tend to be buggy, it would be a good idea to create a backup of your data prior to installing the custom ROM. The applicable flashable Google apps pacakage will also be required if access to Google services such as the Play Store is needed after installation. The CyanogenMod 10.2 nightly build for Xperia Z Ultra can be downloaded here.

PS4 Launch Day Patch Can Be Downloaded In The Background

PS4 Launch Day Patch Can Be Downloaded In The Background

Those who are anxiously awaiting the release of the PlayStation 4 were certainly in for a surprise last week after Sony announced the console would require a launch day patch in order for a number of the console’s key features to function properly. The patch would allow Remote Play, the PlayStation App, multiple log-ins and recording and sharing your gameplay screenshots or video to function among other things and is expected to weigh in at a not-so-hefty 300MB. Thankfully, it’s being reported that 300MB patch won’t require you to sit staring at a progress bar as the patch can be downloaded in the background. (more…)

PlayStation 4′s Killzone: Shadow Fall Was Originally 290GB of Data

There are many areas around the US that have speedy broadband Internet service, but some of us still labor behind incredibly slow connections that take forever to download large files.

With the impending launch of the PS4, the premier launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall is getting a lot of press. Incredibly, the original size of the game files before compression was used was a whopping 290 GB according to details recently published. Considering the game has always been intended to be offered as a digital download, I can only imagine how long that download would take at my house.

    kz sf 620x348magnify

Shadow Fall was eventually compressed down to 40 GB to enable it to fit on a Blu-ray disc. That said, 40GB is still a massive download for people who opt to purchase digitally. One reason the game was so large was because all of the textures are incredibly high resolution. The game also reportedly has a very large surface area around 5 to 10 times larger than Killzone 3 offered.

“I think at some point the disc image that we were generating was around 180 gigs,” said Guerrilla Games’ technical director Michiel van der Leeuw. “And if we would have put all the levels in, which we didn’t, because then the disc image generator broke, it would have been around 290 gigs of data.”

The good news for people hoping to purchase the game in digital format is that the PlayStation 4 will have the PlayGo system that allows you to download only a portion of the game before you can play. The bad news is that portion is still 7.5 GB meaning many people will wait many hours just to download the first portion of the game. Probably better to just buy the game on disc, if you ask me.
