Astronomers have been studying a star cluster known as Messier 67 or M67 intently for a number of years. The star cluster is about 2,500 light years away from the … Continue reading
Trying to orbit a comet as it rockets through space is no easy task—but that’s just what the European Space Agency’s Rosetta spacecraft is poised to do
Something must be done to deal with the estimated 100 million bits of man-made space junk circling the planet, and Japan is taking the lead. But can we do? Shoot it with a laser? Invent Wall-E-like robots to collect it? Nah… let’s just blast a big net into space.
What Is the Space Roar?
Posted in: Today's ChiliIn 2006, NASA stumbled across a source of radio waves with six times the intensity of any other source ever measured. In fact, alone it produced a more intense radio signal than all the stars and galaxies in the entire universe put together. So what the hell was it?
Virgin Galactic has completed its third test flight for the spacecraft that will eventually take commercial passengers into space. The flying machine is called SpaceShip Two. The craft was carried … Continue reading
A few days ago, Virgin Galactic successfully completed another test flight. The test flight happened last Friday and saw the craft reach its highest altitude yet.
You might think the pilot behind the controls would have looked out the window for a bit and enjoyed the view at 71,000 feet. Pilot David Mackay said he didn’t get to look out the window because he was too busy checking the thruster system that will be used to control the craft in space.
SpaceShip Two will eventually fly to an altitude of 62 miles above the surface of the Earth, which is the official start of outer space. Passengers aboard the spacecraft will pay $250,000 each to make the trip into space.

A team of astronomers and engineers want to reproduce the atmosphere of a red giant like the one you are seeing in this Hubble image—right here on Earth. To make this happen, project Nanocosmos will build three five-meter-long machines working with hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, silicon, titanium, iron and other metals at 1500 C (2732 F).
It looks as though Santa arrived too late for Christmas where the half dozen space-station astronauts are concerned, as they have finally received their Christmas presents on Sunday. The method where the presents were delivered did not involve any magical flying reindeer and sleigh, but rather, it used a privately launched supply ship which took an extra month to arrive. Well, there is always wisdom in the adage, “Better late than never” as well as “Good things come to those who wait”, don’t you think so?

Virgin Galactic’s space plane, SpaceShipTwo, finished its third rocket-powered test flight
SpaceShipTwo just finished its third rocket-powered test and reached the highest altitude its ever been at 71,000 feet by hitting a maximum velocity of Mach 1.4. You can see the new reflective coating on the rocket plane’s tail booms which perfectly reflects the flame and our Earth. Lovely. Cant wait to book my ticket!
