Hubble Locates Water On 5 Planets

Hubble Locates Water On 5 PlanetsThe Hubble Space Telescope has achieved new imaging techniques, and this has helped scientists to detect some tracers of water vapor across five different planets in our galaxy. Of course, having detected water on other planets does not automatically mean that life can be supported, since none of these five planets are able to support life according to our definition due to other numerous factors – the main one being these planets are made out of gas, and remain too close to their respective suns which does not allow them to sustain liquid water on their surfaces.

For the curious, these 5 planets are known as WASP-17b, HD209458b, WASP-12b, WASP-19b and XO-1b, where they remain tidally locked with their stars. This means the same side of the planet will face the star at all times, making it bombarded with a constant and powerful stream of solar radiation, which makes it extremely hot and hence, impossible for life that we know on earth to be able to exist in such an environment. If only there were some alien crop circles or something of the equivalent to give us a glimmer of hope that there is some intelligent life out there, or any form of life at all.

    Hubble spots five water-likely planets

Signs of water on five distant planets have been spotted using the Hubble Space Telescope, with scientists finessing their measurements so as to better differentiate which stand the best likelihood of potentially supporting life. Evidence of water had been initially spotted on several Jupiter-like exoplanets previously, but the team led by the University of Maryland […]

The best space station time-lapse yet has an incredible comet in it

You may yawn "oh, it’s just another boring space station time-lapse movie—meh!" and don’t watch this video, but that would be a big mistake. This is, by far, the most breathtaking time-lapse from space I’ve ever seen. It even has a comet flying through. Goosebumps.

The Fukushima Earthquake Actually Changed Earth's Gravity

The 2011 Tohoku earthquake, which caused the tsunami behind the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear meltdown, disrupted more than man-made structures. The European Space Agency’s GOCE satellite, measured a significant change in Earth’s gravity after the earthquake before falling out of the sky on November 11th.

US grapples with protecting lunar landing sites as moon missions increase

The US was the first country to put humans on the surface of the moon and the lunar landing sites from those early Apollo missions are a national treasure. As more countries are working on sending missions to the moon, the US is currently grappling with how it will protect the lunar landing sites from […]

SiriusXM FM-6 satellite declared ready for service

Back in October, we mentioned that SiriusXM satellite radio had launched a new satellite into orbit around the Earth. The satellite is called Sirius FM-6 and was launched by Space Systems/Loral known as SSL. In October, SSL reported that the satellite had deployed its solar arrays after a successful launch from Baikonur Space Center in […]

Comet ISON likely a ball of dust now says NASA

Astronomers ranging from the professional level down to the amateur sky watcher are all disappointed with comet ISON. The comet had the potential to be the brightest in hundreds of years and was called the comet of the century by some. Unfortunately, the comet didn’t make it around the sun intact. NASA says that the […]

Bang, Zoom, Straight to the Moon: China Launches Its First Lunar Rover

Just a decade after entering the space race, China is headed to the moon. With the successful launch of a Long March rocket carrying the Chang’e 3 lunar lander earlier this morning, China is attempting to become the third nation in history to land (rather than crash) a spacecraft on the lunar surface.

All the Habitable Planets Within 60 Light-Years of Earth, Visualized

There may well be more than 60 billion habitable planets littering the Milky Way, but it’s virtually impossible to make use of that figure. Instead, how about this picture, which shows you how many planets are within 60 light-years of Earth.
