Elon Musk’s SpaceX has just posted video of a successful F9R launch, their re-usable rocket concept. The shuttle (pronounced “f-niner”, incidentally) is shown taking off, rising to 250 meters, then … Continue reading
The UK designers at Astronomika have launched a limited edition screenprint series that they describe as their attempt to draw everything humans have sent into space. They call it "a growing compendium of beautifully crafted screenprints celebrating the past, present and future of spaceflight."
This week, Bonhams hosted an auction of historical space items in Manhattan. The Space History Sale featured troves of objects and documents, both American and Soviet, dating back to the heyday of the space race. And Gizmodo got the chance to take a peek.
Guy Build Space Shuttle on His Roof
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhat do you do when you just want to get off of this big blue marble we call Earth? Well, you can call NASA and try to hitch a ride to the International Space Station. Or you could build yourself a replica of the Space Shuttle on your roof. One man in China did the latter.
According to Chinese site Xinhuanet, a 60-something year-old farmer in Guangdong province built this space shuttle replica. Naturally he put it on top of his house. I guess the idea is that if he ever takes off, that house will burn up and erase all traces that he was ever here. Good plan.
This replica makes the house stand out for sure. I wonder if the neighbors love it or hate it. I’m sure it does wonders for his property value.

In the late 1950s, at the dawn of the Space Age, the idea that a wingless vehicle could somehow generate lift just from its body shape was seen as beyond preposterous. But less than a decade later, this early forerunner of the Space Shuttle proved the design far more science than fiction.
In 2016, a new kind of space shuttle will rise to the skies atop an Atlas V rocket. Developed by a private company—the Sierra Nevada Corporation—it would be able to ferry seven astronauts to orbit and back. Its name is the Dream Chaser and this video shows its (spectacular) development progress so far. A fine spaceship indeed!

Posted in: Today's ChiliAn emergency clean-up crew was dispatched to a full-size replica of the Space Shuttle Independence in Houston earlier this morning after some miscreants covered it in graffiti. "Houston We ARE the Problem" is almost a political statement, sure—but vandalizing a national treasure with racial slurs? That’s a serious problem. [KHOU]
This week we have a school in England that filled its new capsule with the latest in tech, a casket from the Reagan administration that for some reason includes biscuits and gravy, and a public ceremony in Florida which will show off a capsule for the retired space shuttle Atlantis. And a town that hates fun. Like, really hates fun.
