Spotify 'Discover' functionality now available on iOS app, 'coming soon' elsewhere

Spotify’s Discover area isn’t quite as ubiquitous as we’d hoped by this point, primarily serving computer-based Spotify users. But today that trend begins to change, with Spotify’s iOS app getting an update (version 0.7.1) which adds the long-awaited Discover functionality alongside a slew of other updates. The “Now Playing” section is changing a bit as well, getting a makeover, and playlists can now be edited directly from your phone. Spotify confirms plans for original content at press event with Mayor Bloomberg

Spotify confirms plans for original content at press event with Mayor Bloomberg

Spotify held a gathering in its movie poster-lined Chelsea offices this afternoon to announce that it is increasing its presence in New York City. Part of the plan includes a brand new US headquarters on 6th Ave that is several times the size of its current space. Most intriguing, some of the new office will be set aside to “create unique content,” according to Ken Parks, who heads up the company’s NYC office. The mention was brief, and Parks offered little detail about what that content might be, but it’s probably safe to assume that we’re looking mostly at exclusive live performances. For now though, we’ll just have to wait until Spotify settles in at its new digs.

Thanks to an update, the Google-flavored version of the app now allows playback maneuvering from that screen in addition to a pair of bug fixes and improved radio performance. There’s also a fabled feature that allows for navigating the kit using telepathy to boot (completely true, ’cause it’s totally in the change log). Rdio version 2.21 for iOS gets song stations, autoplay

DNP Rdio version 221 for iOS gets song stations, autoplay

Rdio, the streaming service that hates the letter a, has updated its iOS app to help users find new, yet similar, music. Song Stations will generate playlists from a single artist, which folds in related music as it goes. The feature will let you preview the next four tracks in the list, giving you the power to skip as many time as you like — just in case you find yourself trapped in a singer’s middle-period creative slump. Rdio has also added autoplay to the app, so when your current playlist has ended, it’ll find something similar to ensure you’re never plunged into an awkward silence.
