Daft Punk Breaks Spotify Streaming Records

Daft Punk Breaks Spotify Streaming RecordsDance duo Daft Punk has certainly caused quite a sensation in the past with many of their hit records, and their first new single in eight years that is called “Get Lucky”, has also managed to make more than just some waves, as it has already smashed streaming records over at Spotify. This particular comeback that features singer Pharrell Williams, managed to end the day as the biggest streaming day ever for a single track in the US as well as the UK on the same day that it was released.

Spotify, the Swedish online music site, which recently “set up shop” so to speak in 8 new markets, did not release the total number of streams for the track that proved to be top dog on Daft Punk’s latest album, Random Access Memories. According to Spotify’s Will Hope, he did mention that this album would be “the biggest” this year, saying, “There was never any doubt that the first original single from Daft Punk in years was going to be one of the biggest debut singles of 2013. We expect the album to become one of the biggest, if not the biggest, on Spotify this year.” What do you think?

Daft Punk’s Get Lucky sets streaming record

Daft Punk launched a new single on April 19 called Get Lucky. That single proved incredibly popular and the duo has crushed the streaming record for the number of streams on the first day of songs availability on Spotify. The new track was listened to more times in a single 24-hour period the any other song in the history of Spotify.

The track eclipsed records in both the US and the UK. In the UK, the record was previously held by the track Pompeii by Bastille. In the US the record was previously held by Macklemore’s Thrift Shop. The Daft Punk track also surpassed Justin Timberlake’s first-day numbers for his track called Pusher Love Girl.

Get Lucky is the first single from the coming Daft Punk album Random Access Memories. That album is the duo’s first in eight years. The track also topped the iTunes charts when it was released.

It’s unclear exactly how many times the new track was streamed on Spotify. If you’re a fan of Daft Punk, you can check out the official video for the song below. Vocalist on this particular track is Pharrell Williams.

How Spotify Got Itself a New Logo

It’s not uncommon for a company to redesign its logo over the years (or decades) but for a startup like Spotify who hasn’t been around that long (compared to Microsoft, for instance), it was rather unusual to see the streaming music service ditch its quirky logo for something simpler last month. And with the new logo and icon rolling out to desktop users this week, we just had to find out the who/what/where/when/why. More »

Spotify launches in 8 new markets

Spotify is expanding to more locations throughout the world today. The music streaming service announced today that users in Mexico, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Iceland, bringing Spotify’s reach to 28 markets around the world. The expansion should increase the service’s total number of users.

QuLiJ11

Currently, Spotify has over 25 million users, where free users can stream up to 40 hours of music per week, while unlimited subscribers obviously don’t have a limit, nor do they have to deal with ads. Currently, Spotify has over 6 million paid subscribers, and we’re sure that number will grow now that more markets have access to the streaming music service.

Spotify says that they aim to be available anywhere, but expanding to that point will take time. The company ultimately wants to be available in Asia completely, with today’s expansion in Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore a good start. The continent is a hotbed for internet users, where many online services report having the most users.

Of course, today’s expansions are merely just stepping stones for Spotify in their quest to become available all around the world, but it seems they’re confident in getting to that point in the foreseeable future. The same features are available to international users, including both free and premium subscription options.

Spotify expanding into new markets, now live in Hong Kong, Mexico, Malaysia and more

Rumors around the web have pegged Spotify for an impending expansion into more countries, with an official announcement purportedly slated for tomorrow. But it looks like the company’s jumped the gun, as tips have begun to trickle in reporting the service as currently operational in Malaysia and Singapore. And it could be live in even more territories right now. A quick glance at Spotify’s country selection page lists working sites for Mexico, Iceland, Hong Kong, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. We’ve reached out to the company for official comment on the rollout and will update when we hear back. Regardless, if you’re living in any of those nations mentioned above, your streaming music options just increased by one.

Grand Theft Auto soundtracks now available on iTunes and Spotify

We’re not sure if this could have come soon enough, but it’s here, at last. Rockstar Games announced today that the radio playlist soundtracks from all of the Grand Theft Auto titles, starting with the classic Grand Theft Auto III, are now available either for purchase on iTunes or for streaming on Spotify.

Playlists are included for all the major Grand Theft Auto titles, including Episodes and Stories installments as well. In all, Grand Theft Auto IV, Episodes from Liberty City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto III, Liberty City Stories, and Chinatown Wars are included in the package.

69 albums in total are available, and they’re listed as the radio stations featured in each of the games, including the classic ones like Flashback 95.6 and Lips 106 to induce a little nostalgia during your music-listening sessions. They should no doubt make you want to boot up that Xbox and start playing the game for the heck of it.

Prices for the albums vary depending on which one you get. Some radio stations only include a few songs, and you grab those for only a few dollars for the album, but more filled-out albums will cost as much as $20. However, you can stream the music for free over Spotify, but if you prefer the ad-free approach, you can stream all the music you want for just $10 per month.

GTA radio brings its broadcasts to iTunes and Spotify

GTA radio brings its broadcasts on iTunes and Spotify

From Vice to San Andreas and on to Liberty City, Rockstar Games has digitally boxed up playlists for eight of its Grand Theft Auto titles which are now available on Spotify and iTunes. “As a service for all GTA fans” — and to keep them chomping at the bit for the incoming sequel — Rockstar has curated over 70 playlists from notable faux stations like Radio Espantoso, The Vibe 98.8 and K-Jah. The games studio was limited by the songs that were currently available, so there’s a few omissions from both the streaming service and Apple’s music store. Once you’ve got over that initial disappointment, head to Rockstar’s site to sample the last ten years of GTA’s drive-time listening.

Spotify Rolling Out ‘Follow’ Tab To Desktop App Users

Spotify Rolling Out Follow Tab To Desktop App Users

Spotify’s additional features that will hopefully make it much easier to discover new music started to gradually roll out in late February within its web application, but today, the company has started rolling out those updates to its desktop application.

The update will add its new “Follow” tab on the left side bar in the desktop application after the application prompts you an update is currently available, which it will then install and restart to make the Follow tab available. The Follow tab replaces the not-so-often used People tab, which was just a list where you could view which Facebook friends were Spotify members. Once the Follow tab is available, you’ll be able to discover new music your friends as well as celebrities and a number of popular organizations are currently listening to. (more…)
