Final Fantasy III Headed For PC (Rumor)

Final Fantasy III Headed For PC (Rumor)Square Enix has had quite a fair number of single player RPGs in the past that were epics, and out of sheer necessity at that point in time simply because the infrastructure back then did not really manage to support multiplayer RPGs in the same way that we know of today. Having said that, some of those titles happen to be classics today, such as Final Fantasy III. In fact, it has been almost too long since we have seen Square Enix show a remote amount of interest in delivering single-player RPGs to the PC platform. Apparently, the German ratings board has just published its grade for the PC port of Final Fantasy III, which means that there is a very real possibility of this once rare RPG (as it has already been released on other handheld platforms such as the Nintendo DS, iOS devices and Sony PSP) appear on Steam alongside the likes of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII.

Final Fantasy III happened to be the first title in the series that actually defined ‘jobs’ in the game properly, where thieves could use “Steal” while Dragoons started to make use of “Jump”. The main characters comprise of a quartet of orphans, and with a PC release, hopefully they will gain some named recognition.

Do bear in mind this remains a rumor until mentioned otherwise via an official statement or press release by the folks over at Square Enix. Still, it is nice to be able to dream, isn’t it?

Hitman GO Arriving On iOS 17th April

Hitman GO Arriving On iOS 17th AprilThe Hitman franchise has largely relied on stealth in order for players to complete their missions, although we guess this largely depends on the type of player and whether they’d rather creep their way around, or burst into rooms gun blazing. That being said, Hitman could be getting a less fast-paced version of the game in the Hitman GO title which is scheduled for release on mobile devices.

According to Square Enix Montreal, they have announced that Hitman GO will be seeing a release on the 17th of April where it will launch on iOS devices followed by Android devices at a later date. The game will also be shown off at PAX East this week so there is a good chance we could be hearing about the game in the next few days as well.

The game will be a turn-based version of Hitman and will feature a rather interesting look in the form of a diorama-styled set pieces on a grid. It will sort of play like the Hitman game, except in turn-based style, and will also offer players access to the usual suspects, like disguises, distractions, sniper rifles, and the likes.

The game will also be priced at $4.99 and will offer access to 68 levels, all of which can be unlocked by playing through the entire game. The studio has also announced that there will be additional levels added in the future, so that’s something worth looking forward to. No word on whether the game will have in-app purchases (we’re hoping not) so we guess we’ll just have to wait until the 17th of April to find out. In the meantime who else is looking forward to this new style of Hitman on their phone/tablets?

School Girl Strikers iOS RPG From Square Enix Coming Your Way

Remember how at the beginning of this month we saw a new teaser site that was launched by Square Enix, where it seemed to concentrate a whole lot on ‘Ranobe-Style’ RPG? That happens to be a reference that is commonly used to describe an episodic book and anime series, or if loosely translated, ‘Light Novel’. Well, apparently the teaser points to an iOS RPG that is called School Girl Strikers. I know that the mobile platform is worth looking into since it has grown explosively over the years, but for Square Enix to work on an iOS game instead of a full RPG console release is not something that happens every day.

Apart from that, chances as School Girl Strikers would never make its way Stateside eventually due to the content of the game, not to mention that gamers in the West do have different gaming ideologies or philosophies. At the very least, there is a “Sound & Audio” trailer that was released by Square Enix, and in Japanese no less, to set the tone for the upcoming RPG on Apple devices.

So far, there has been no mention of any other information or leads that are worth exploring, including the availability date, but how much do you think a Square Enix title will cost on the Apple App Store?

Square Enix Opens Teaser Site For New RPG

Square Enix Opens Teaser Site For New RPGWhen it comes to RPGs, you know that very few companies have the caliber and experience of Square Enix to deliver as and when it matters, and this time around, the same rings true. Apparently, Square Enix has made available a new teaser site to the masses which will concentrate on a new ‘Ranobe-Style’ RPG, which happens to be a term that is used all too commonly to describe episodic book and anime series, or if you were to translate it, it would be ‘Light Novel’.

Original Final Fantasy XIV’s Downfall Was Due To Overly Designed Flowerpots (Amongst Other Things)

Original Final Fantasy XIVs Downfall Was Due To Overly Designed Flowerpots (Amongst Other Things)When Square Enix first announced that they’d be attempting a Final Fantasy MMORPG, safe to say many gamers were thrilled by that news. The game was launched to much anticipation and hype, only to fall flat on its face shortly after, leading to Square Enix to relaunch it several years later as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

So what was it that led to the original Final Fantasy XIV doing so badly? Well turns out Square Enix was magnanimous enough to share their thoughts on the failed game during a presentation at GDC, and according to the developers, overly detailed flowerpots was one the problems and was actually a symptom of a much larger problem. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII DeviantART Contest: Current Fashion

Before its Diablo III art contest, DeviantART also held a competition for another major video game – Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. The contest called for the art community’s members to show their own take on the heroine Lightning. The entries were judged by none other than Square Enix’ artist, designer and director Tetsuya Nomura.

The contest was held last month, from February 11 to February 20. Out of the 4,655 submissions, Nomura – known for his character designs for Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII, X and XIII and the Kingdom Hearts series – chose three grand prize winners.

Below is Nicolas Barge’s winning piece, of which Nomura said, “At first glance it looks like a CG, and it has a level of quality that makes it look like it was captured as a screenshot.  While there were many heroic costumes for Lightning, I was drawn to the femininity of this costume and her hairstyle.”

Nomura was also impressed by Randis Albion’s piece, saying, “It’s wonderful as an illustration, but in addition to that, the artist drew in both the front and back views, so I felt the artist’s clear intent when they created this piece. The red and blue color scheme was very beautiful, too.”

Marga Donaire’s submission is one of my favorites among all of the entries, and it sounded like Nomura felt the same way too: “With one look I was hooked. The costume itself is sophisticated, and it’s also very well done as an illustration. The background that reminded me of the Japanese flag (Hinomaru) matched well with the piece and was beautiful.  As an artist, when I look at different works of art, I think to myself “If it were up to me, I would do it differently,” but that thought didn’t cross my mind once when I saw this picture.”

As if earning praise from such an accomplished artist wasn’t enough, Nicolas, Randis and Marga also won an original sketch from Tetsuya Nomura, a custom Xbox 360 and controller, $1000, a keychain, a shirt, and copies of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. They were also featured on the front page of deviantART. Congrats guys! Switch to your browser costume and head to deviantART to check out all of the entries.
