Star Trek Wines, Set Phasers to Stinking Drunk

Many Star Trek fans needed a drink after seeing the latest movie. For many, the modern Star Trek franchise just seems to miss the mark, but wine never lets you down. Here’s a series of $25 a bottle Star Trek branded wines from Vinasa Winery in Sonoma, California. Die-hard Trekkies, drink up and forget the recent movies. As well as the last couple of TV series.

These wines come in three different bottles commemorating three different episodes from the original series: The City on the Edge of Forever (The Hangover on the Edge of Forever), Mirror Mirror (Who is that handsome devil looking back at me? I want to sleep with that guy!,) and The Trouble with Tribbles (Ok, I’m seeing things now. That’s enough booze for me)

All the wine is the same. Just regular red table wine with a Trek label. And that’s all a geek really needs.

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: biospheres, X-wings and energy-creating shoes

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

Inhabitat's Week in Green biospheres, Xwings and

News that Amazon will add three large biospheres to its downtown Seattle headquarters had the tech world buzzing this week. The domed structures will feature a mix of workspaces and gardens, and they’ll be flanked by a public park. Amazon’s big announcement wasn’t the week’s only surprise, though. A multinational consortium announced plans to develop a Dubai-style artificial island with a space hotel and a zero-gravity spa off the coast of Barcelona. And new research finds that “pinkhouses” — vertical farms that use only pink light — are much more efficient than those that use the full light spectrum.

Acer Aspire R7 Hands-on: Spock’s Choice

This week SlashGear is having a peek at the Acer Aspire R7 notebook – that rather unique piece of machinery you saw advertised last month aside teasers for the newest Star Trek movie. It’s no surprise that this device was chosen to take on that role as its mysterious – and here we find rather enticing – abilities allow it to look like a rather familiar starship. With Acer’s “Ezel” hinge, the Aspire R7 can take on several shapes – including that of the Kirk-captained Enterprise.

Up in front the user will be working with a 15-inch display at 1080p resolution, this run by an 3rd generation Intel Ivy Bridge processor – we’ve got i5 but you’ll have the option of i7 as well, depending on when you check the device out. Inside is Windows 8 right out of the box, and the display has 10-finger touch sensitivity.

Also inside you’ll find 6GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive, not to mention a 24GB solid state drive as well. The whole machine weighs in at approximately 5.5 pounds, which is right there on the edge of “this is kind of heavy” and “oh this isn’t as heavy as it looks”.

Under the machine you’ll notice some rather sizable bumpers. These pieces of rubbery material hold the notebook hybrid in place while you’re swiveling your display around and offer a bit of a bump so your speakers can blast out the bottom and the sides. You’re also working with some Dolby technology there for sound – and we’re already sure it’s loud.

As it was with the Star Trek Into Darkness film, so too was this machine available starting on the 17th of May. It’ll run a prospective owner $999 USD, and we’ll be letting you know if it’s all worth it soon – stay tuned for SlashGear’s full review!

Star Trek Knuckles Tattoo: All Hands on Deck

I’ve never loved a TV show enough to get a tattoo of it, but if I did, it would be something unique like this knuckle tatt of the U.S.S. Enterprise D. When his hands and fingers are separated, everything is normal, but put them together and you have yourself a mission to explore strange new worlds. Saucer separation has never been easier.

These knuckles belong to Jason Criss. Much like the Enterprise’s ongoing voyages, his tattoo isn’t finished yet. He plans on adding more shading and colors after the initial outline heals.

I think it should be glow in the dark, so he can sit in a dark room and hum the theme song, recreating the intro. Bonus: If he holds a lightsaber, it looks like phaser fire!

Star Trek Into Darkness leads the weekend box office, misses estimates

The latest Star Trek film, which made its theatrical debut last Thursday, led the way in box office earnings over the weekend, beating out other films like The Great Gatsby and Iron Man 3. Into Darkness brought in $70.6 million over the weekend in the US, and grabbed a total of $84.1 million since its release late last week.

title-580x232

However, the sequel barely missed beating out the 2009 Star Trek film, which garnered just over $75 million over its opening weekend four years ago. The movie’s co-production company, Paramount, seemed to think it would make a lot more over the three-day period, as Into Darkness’s totals so far have missed the company’s estimates. After all, Into Darkness was the weekend’s only major release.

The new Star Trek film did push Iron Man 3 down to the second spot for the first time since its release. Iron Man 3 only brought in just over $35 million over the weekend, but that pushes the movie’s total to $337 million in the US, and crossing the $1 billion mark on a global scale. Of course, that’s far cry from Avatar’s $2.7 billion total, but you know a movie is quite successful when it passes the $1 billion mark. For what it’s worth, only 16 movies have ever made more than $1 billion globally.

While some believe that Into Darkness will make a comeback in the coming weeks to make up for the revenue it could’ve made over the weekend, it’s not likely that the film will see a huge increase anytime soon. It faces some stiff competition from upcoming movies, like Fast and Furious 6 and the third iteration of The Hangover, both of which are expected to bring in big bucks.

The 2009 Star Trek film grossed a total of $385.7 million worldwide while it was in theaters. Of course, it’s possible that Into Darkness could match this, but the chances are slim. After an OK opening weekend, and ongoing competition with Iron Man 3, as well as future road blocks with other summer movies, topping $400 million may be a difficult task for the new film.

Bing Translator gains support for Star Trek language Klingon

Microsoft has teamed up with Paramount Pictures to bring Trekkies a translation tool essential for interplanetary communications: support for the alien language Klingon on Bing Translator. The feature was added in honor of the latest installment of the movie, Star Trek: Into Darkness, which hit theaters today. As with other languages, translation works both directions.

Fixed Klingon

Users can type an English phrase and receive its Klingon translation in the proper alphabet, and for those times when you need a Klingon translation, you can reverse the process and enter the alien phrases, in turn getting the English translation. The feature is available via the Web version of Bing, and via the Bing Translator app for Windows Phone 8 with the update Microsoft rolled out.

Microsoft went into detail on how the translation process project was performed over on MSDN, offering an explanation in both English and another in Klingon, for those fluent among us. The project was done in partnership with the Klingon Language Institute, and was particularly difficult because of the lack of substantial texts in the language, let alone transcribed texts.

That is where the fan community came in, providing feedback and corrections. The translation engine was trained with an initial bought of transcribed Klingon texts using the Microsoft Translator Hub. Over time, the combination of these two things resulted in more accurate results as the project progressed and was refined, and finally the finished project, which is now available.

You can get a translation in either Latin script or in its native plqaD script, but Microsoft advises that you must manually select the language rather than relying on Auto-Detect. If the translation option isn’t enough for you, there’s also a widget that can be added to websites, allowing visitors to translate the pages into the Star Trek language. And just for the record, this is how you say SlashGear in Klingon:

Guy Forges Klingon Bat’leth, Earns Much Honor

If you are a fan of the Awe Me channel, then you already know that for their series Man at Arms, master swordsmith and renowned propmaster, Tony Swatton, forges cool weapons and then takes them into the field to try them out. This week, Tony has created yet another epic weapon – Worf’s Klingon Bat’leth.

batleth weapon
He had gotten his hands on a cheap Chinese copy of a Klingon Bat’Leth, but he wasn’t happy with it, so he decided to make his own. And it isn’t as simple as cutting a piece of metal into shape and then swinging it at your enemies. This weapon was so sharp that Tony says it “almost cut his head off.” So he put on a chainmail cowl, a welding jacket and a leather apron to protect himself while working with it. Check out the build in the video clip below, and be sure to wait around until about 3:44 in to see it in action.

In the end, it is a thing of beauty and deadly sharp. It’s definitely not a toy. This thing will slice and dice you whether a Klingon is wielding it or not.

Star T-Rex T-Shirt: To Boldly Go Where No Dinosaur Has Gone Before

I’m really looking forward to seeing Star Trek: Into Darkness when it comes out this week. I’ve even got tickets to the Wednesday night IMAX advance screening. That said, there’s still nothing quite like The Original Series. Sure, Kirk and McCoy could be pretty cheesy, but that’s part of what made it so classic. Now, you can travel back in time to an even earlier incarnation of Kirk, Spock and Scotty.

The crew of the Enterprise looks just a little bit more intimidating in this shirt designed by Captain RibMan for Design by Humans. Though I have to say their tiny hands are still impractical for much of anything besides holding a phaser. Can you imagine trying to use a tricorder with those things? And forget about fitting onto the bridge of the Enterprise.
