Steam Family Sharing beta rollout begins next week

Steam already had a good setup in terms of being able to get and play games, however one bit that had been lacking was the ability to share those games with friends and family members. While that option is not yet available, it has been announced. This will be arriving as Steam Family Sharing and […]

Steam announces Family Sharing beta, for lending out your digital downloads

Steam brings Family Sharing to its gaming library

You probably thought family plans were just for cellular data. Well, sir or madame, you are wrong. Soon enough you’ll be able to share games you purchased through Steam with your friends and family, as well. The king of downloadable gaming has just announced Steam Family Sharing, which will allow customers to authorize certain devices to access their library of lendable titles. The same way that you’re able to loan out a physical copy of a game or a book, you’ll now be able to lend your digital downloads to others. And, if you see that your brother has a game you’ve been on the fence about, you can request access and try it for yourself. There are, of course, limitations. Your library can only be used by one person at a time. So if you, the primary user, log in to spend some quality time with Call of Duty Ghosts, your buddy checking out Bastion ahead of Transistor’s release will have only a few minutes to either save and quit, or buy the title for themselves. Family Sharing will be launching in a limited beta next week, and you can sign up for it at the source link.

Let the god games begin: 22cans’ Godus beta available on Steam Early Access September 13th (update: iOS and Android release dates)

Let the god games begin 22cans' Godus beta available on Steam Early Access September 13th

A collective effort pulled back Curiosity’s curtain early this summer, and now it’s nearly time to play god. On September 13th, 22cans and Peter Molyneux will make the beta release of Godus, the studio’s latest “experiment” in god gaming, available via Steam Early Access for PC and Mac. The early release will cost eager overlords $19.99 and allow them to “sculpt every inch of a beautiful world,” and, of course, destroy those worlds in multiplayer battles with other virtual gods. The Kickstarter-backed nod to Molyneux’s Populous reached its funding goal in December of last year with the promise of PC, Mac and mobile compatibility and continued his focus on the video game as social experiment. Final release details are still under wraps but you can see an updated trailer after the break.

And for more Molyneux, check out our interview from E3 2013.

Update: We had a chance to catch up with Molyneux following his keynote at PAX and, among other things, he revealed release dates for iOS and Android versions of Godus: October 31st (Halloween) and November 14th (Day of the Colombian Woman), respectively.%Gallery-slideshow77099%

Metro: Last Light’s nuclear horror creeps to Mac in September, Linux later this year

Developer 4A Games is spreading Metro: Last Light‘s bleak vision of a nuclear future (is there any other kind?) to new digs starting September 10th. Next month it’ll be available via Steam — with Steam Play support — and the App Store, but Linux fans have to wait until “sometime later” this year to play another high-profile title on Valve’s favorite OS. If add-on content turns your crank, the extended love the Windows and console versions got will be available at launch, with future releases arriving simultaneously for all systems. If you haven’t played Last Light‘s prequel on one of those other platforms and want to catch up on the story, give the book it’s based on a shot in the meantime. You’ve finished all your feel-good beach novels by now, yeah?

What Age of Empires Online says about Steam’s impact on free-to-play games

What Age of Empires Online says about Steam's impact on freetoplay games

Microsoft’s attempt to reinvigorate its aging Age of Empires game franchise most recently resulted in a free-to-play game distributed on the company’s (now shuttered) Games for Windows Live service. The game, Age of Empires Online, launched as a free title with two civilizations available to play as; any additional civilizations (initially) cost $20 apiece, a hefty price despite the amount of content therein (30ish hours per civilization). Longtime AOE fans, understandably, reacted negatively to the game’s business model, which took the content previously offered in full from older AOE games and broke it up into an a la carte, F2P title.

As Microsoft AOEO executive producer Kevin Perry told a crowd of GDC Europe attendees this morning in a panel titled “F2P the Wrong Way: Age of Empires Online,” the game outright “wasn’t ready for launch” when it arrived in Summer 2011. Though Perry ran through a variety of ways that his team helped to fix AOEO‘s course, he brought up one particularly interesting factor: Valve’s Steam game service. When the game hit Steam in March 2012, the game’s DAU (daily active users) spiked by more than three times — a larger bump than any other change by far, including new content (as seen in the above image).

Microsoft hires former Valve developer liaison to bolster Windows gaming

The future of Microsoft’s digital game distribution systems just got brighter. Jason Holtman, who was heavily involved with the growth of Valve’s Steam platform, has been hired by Redmond. According to a statement he gave Gamesindustry International, he’ll work to flesh out Windows’ native gaming and entertainment efforts. That isn’t plausible without developer support though, and given his history as a liaison between devs and Valve, he’ll be putting those skills to work to “make that happen” at his new gig. However, seeing that Microsoft’s other gaming platform is taking the majority of the company’s focus right now, we don’t expect many new details about Holtman’s duties to surface that soon.

Well for those who loved the arcade and console version of the game and would love to play it on their PC, you’re in luck as it has been announced that The King of Fighters 13 will be arriving on Steam come 13th of September. The game will be priced at $29.99, but for now it is being offered at a 17% discount and will be priced at $24.99, although this offer will end come 14th of September.

The PC version of The King of Fighters 13 will come with the same content as its console version, and will include online, tutorial, and story mode. It will also come with Iori with the Power of Flames, NESTS Style Kyo, and Mr. Karate DLC characters which were originally characters part of the console’s DLC version. SNK also claims to have made improvements to the game’s netcode allowing for better communication speeds, and the ability to “tailor your online experience according to your PC environment”, and also gamers can switch to a less intense graphics mode if their computer cannot handle it.

There is a beta test that SNK will be conducting prior to the release and they are recruiting up to 300 players. The beta will begin on the 20th of August and run to the 29th of August, with the signup period ending on the 18th of August, so hit up SNK’s website for the details.

Twitch update for iOS more than triples live channels, revamps chat

Twitch update for iOS more than triples live channels, revamps chat

Twitch streams a lot of events these days, and it’s improving its iOS app to keep up with the flood of new content. The just-posted 2.3.5 update more than triples the number of accessible live channels from 200 to over 750, giving viewers a better chance of seeing a local tourney or a “let’s play” feed. Chat has also received a thorough makeover that brings both a simpler design and support for Twitch’s unique take on emoticons. And if you’re a dedicated Dota 2 player, you’ll definitely want this upgrade — link your Steam account and you’ll earn item drops in Valve’s arena battler when watching certain streams. There’s no word of corresponding updates for Android or other platforms, although Twitch says it’s improving channel capacities across all its apps.

The King Of Fighters 13 Game Trailer Spotted On Steam

The King Of Fighters 13 Game Trailer Spotted On SteamIf you’re a fan of arcade fighting games, like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, chances are the King of Fighters title is one that is well-known to you. While the King of Fighters 13 title might be considered “old” and the fact that it has been played in arcades, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 over the past few years, it looks like the game could soon be making its way onto the PC as well. This is thanks to a trailer of the game spotted on Steam, along with a logo that reads “The King of Fighters 13 Steam Edition”. Given that Steam is Valve’s distribution service for PC games, presumably this would suggest a PC release is on the horizon. There’s no word on when the game will be released on Steam, or how much it will cost gamers, but if you loved the title and would love to get it on your PC, check back with us in the future for more updates! In the meantime if you’d like to check out the trailer, hit up Steam’s website for the details.
