WD upgrades NASfriendly Red drives with 25inch versions, 4TB desktop model

If you’re looking for hard drives built to withstand the rigors of network-attached storage, Western Digital has a treat in store for you. The company just expanded its Red line of NAS-ready drives to include 2.5-inch models in 750GB and 1TB capacities; both disks fit into smaller enclosures while maintaining the Red series’ power and speed optimizations for always-on media servers. WD is offering a few perks for desktop users, too. The existing 3.5-inch range now includes a high-capacity 4TB drive, and every new Red model ships with NASware 2.0 technology that should improve reliability. All three Red variants are shipping today; the compact 750GB and 1TB disks respectively sell for $79 and $99, while the 4TB behemoth costs $229.

Major Nelson: Xbox One won’t support external storage at launch

Major Nelson Xbox One won't support external storage at launch

We hope you weren’t counting on using the Xbox One’s USB ports for external storage from day one; as it turns out, you’ll likely have to be patient. Speaking at the PAX Prime expo this weekend, Microsoft’s Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) mentioned that external drive support wouldn’t be available at launch because the Xbox team was “working on other things.” It’s not certain when the feature will arrive, Hryb says. We’ve reached out to Microsoft to verify the statement. If it’s accurate, though, you’ll want to be cautious when filling the Xbox One’s built-in 500GB drive with Xbox Game Store downloads.

Tencent ups the ante, offers users 10TB of free cloud storage in promotion

Image

If you thought that the free storage that’s offered by Microsoft, Google and others were generous, then you’ve never been to China. Tencent, in an attempt to crawl past local rivals Baidu and Weibo, is offering customers a whopping 10 Terabytes of space on its Weiyun cloud storage service. All users need to do is sign up with the company, offer up their QQ account number, and download the Weiyun mobile app — which bags ’em an instant 1TB, with the allowance gradually increasing to 10TB the more files they upload. The only downside for us, naturally, is that the promotion does make SkyDrive’s 25GB seem a bit stingy by comparison.
