Samsung unveils not-so-entry-level SSD 840 EVO with up to 1TB of space

Samsung SSD 840 EVO

Disappointed that most entry-level solid-state drives are limited in capacity, speed or both? You’ll be happy with Samsung’s newly unveiled SSD 840 EVO, then. While it’s badged as a starter model, the 2.5-inch SATA drive carries up to 1TB of storage, or twice as much as the regular SSD 840. Thanks to both 10nm-class flash memory and a multi-core MEX memory controller, the EVO range is also faster than you’d expect from the category. Depending on the model, sequential write speeds have doubled or tripled versus the original series, peaking at 520MB/s; the flagship 1TB edition can read at a similarly blistering 540MB/s. Samsung doesn’t yet have US pricing for the SSD 840 EVO line, although it expects the drives to reach “major” markets worldwide by early August, with other regions coming later.

BitTorrent Sync Beta launches with Android app, file versioning

BitTorrent Sync Alpha isn’t ready to equal rivals like Dropbox or Google Drive without a mobile component. It’s a good thing that BitTorrent just launched Sync Beta, then — the more polished release includes an Android app that syncs with computers and shares files with fellow Android users. The update also brings versioning through SyncArchive, which stores previous file iterations in a folder. Sync Beta is available on both Android and the desktop today, and BitTorrent promises that an iOS equivalent is coming in the near future.

Microsoft asks US Attorney General to intervene on security disclosures, denies assisting with NSA interceptions

Microsoft request on FISA disclosures

Microsoft sits between a rock and a hard place when it comes to privacy — it can’t reveal more about FISA requests, but it’s also accused of assisting with NSA eavesdropping. The company is trying to settle both matters today, starting with a call on the US Attorney General for help. Microsoft hasn’t had a response to its June 19th request to publish aggregate security request data, and it wants the Attorney General to directly intervene by legalizing these disclosures. The government official hasn’t publicly acknowledged the request so far, although we weren’t expecting an immediate answer.

At the same time, Microsoft is expanding its denials of The Guardian‘s recent reporting that it facilitates large-scale NSA snooping. Along with insisting once more that it only offers specific information in response to legal requests, the firm claims that its supposedly eavesdrop-friendly actions were innocuous. Microsoft was only moving Skype nodes in-house rather than simplifying the NSA’s access to audio and video chats, for example. It’s doubtful that the public position will completely reassure doubters given the veils of secrecy surrounding the NSA and its collaborators, but the crew in Redmond at least has a full statement on record.

Toshiba Exceria Pro SD card touted as “world’s fastest”

Toshiba is coming out with an ultra-fast series of SD cards that they’re calling Exceria Pro, and the company is claiming that the new SD cards are the fastest around, with speeds hitting as fast 240 MB/s. These cards are aimed at professionals, such as photographers who need photos saved quickly.

id-2044467-Toshiba_EXCERIA_PRO_TM

The card will come in 16GB and 32GB variants and will offer crazy-fast write speeds that are about as fast a typical solid state drive, thanks to the UHS-II standard that the new cards are using. They don’t have any other fancy features, though, like WiFi transferring, but many photographers and videographers should get a kick out of just the speeds alone.

Besides the Exceria Pro cards, there will also be some regular Exceria SDXC cards that will have capacities of 32GB or 64GB. These will also operate under the UHS-II standard, but they’ll have a maximum write speed of 120 MB/s, which is still pretty darn quick if you ask us, so we wouldn’t count those out just yet.

Toshiba hopes to have these bad boys out by October, with the regular Exceria SD cards releasing in November. Prices have yet to be announced, but it’s said that the 64GB Exceria SDXC card will cost around $250. That’s certainly not cheap change, and we don’t expect point-and-shoot operators to carry these cards around on their person, but if you’re in the media business and need a fast memory card, these will probably do.

Toshiba’s Exceria Pro SDHC cards claim ‘world’s fastest’ write speeds of 240MB per second

Toshiba's Exceria Pro SDHC cards claim 'world's fastest' write speeds of 240MB per second

SD cards are a dime a dozen, so any new entrants need a pretty juicy hook to get our ears pricked. Toshiba’s Exceria Pro cards mightn’t have any wireless or special transfer features, but they do claim to take the “world’s fastest” title for one basic spec: write speeds. Intended for top-level cameras, the Pro SDHC cards will come in 16GB and 32GB configurations and tout the UHS-II high-speed standard for achieving write speeds of 240MB per second. Launching alongside the Pro options will be a couple of Exceria SDXC cards with capacities of 32GB or 64GB. Also UHS-II compliant, these have maximum write speeds of 120MB per second; data read speeds of all Exceria cards top out at 260MB per second. They’ll be available in “major markets worldwide,” but will arrive in Japan first, with the Pro cards launching in October before the regular Exceria models in November. Pricing info isn’t available right now, but we imagine they’ll be a little more expensive than the standard cards tucked away in your point-and-shoot.
