Western Digital dishes out world’s thinnest 1TB hard drive

It’s not the thinnest hard drive ever, but Western Digital has launched a new 7mm drive that happens to be the world’s thinnest 1TB hard drive. The company has added the new drive to its Blue lineup of hard drives, and while it’s not the thinnest drive we’ve seen, it’s still a pretty impressive sliver of storage.

wd-1tb

Despite its tiny size, there’s actually a lot going on under the hood. The drive has motor shafts at each end to reduce vibration and absorb shock, as well as improve tracking. There’s also secure parking to keep the heads away from the plates during shocks, and there are electromagnetic and piezo actuators on the inside for more precise movement of all the moving parts.

Western Digital is releasing the drive today to both OEMS and consumers, so not only will you be able to pick up one of these bad boys for yourself, but you’ll also see them popping up in new laptops at some point — most likely even during Computex this week, where we’ve already seen a handful of new machines make their way into the ether.

The new drive is priced at $139 and comes with a two-year warranty, which isn’t a bad deal at all. Granted, we’ve certainly seen cheaper 1TB drives floating around, but if it’s a slim drive you’re looking for, this 7mm beauty is probably your best bet if you don’t mind spending a little more cash for high-capacity, low-profile storage.

Western Digital ships 7mm WD Blue, world’s thinnest 1TB hard drive

Western Digital ships 7mm WD Blue, world's thinnest 1TB hard drive

Move over, Seagate — there’s a new sheriff in slimtown. Not content to introduce the first 5mm thick 500GB HDD, Western Digital just announced that it’s shipping the world’s thinnest 1TB hard drive, the 7mm WD Blue. It features StableTrack which secures the motor shaft at both ends to reduce vibration and improve tracking, plus dual-stage actuators — electromagnetic for coarse displacement and piezo for fine movement. SecurePark keeps the heads clear of the disk surface and increases shock resistance. It’s the same HDD we caught in prototype form at IDF 2012 and we reckon the 7mm WD Black (hybrid) version we saw at CES 2013 can’t be far behind. The 1TB model (WD10SPCXX) is priced at $139 with a two year warranty and is available to OEMs, integrators and consumers right now. We fully expect this drive to appear in one of the laptops / tablets launching at Computex this week, so don’t miss our coverage.

Eye-Fi’s Mobi SD card sends images straight to a phone or tablet

EyeFi's Mobi SD card sends images straight to a phone or tablet

When Eye-Fi first launched its wireless SD cards back in 2006, most of us weren’t carrying smartphones, much less tablets. At the time, the idea was to send your photos straight from your camera to your PC, where you could run slideshows or upload them to the cloud (if you were already into that sort of thing). Lately, though, Eye-Fi has been forced to rethink its product: the company just announced the Mobi, a $50 Class 10 card that sends images directly to your mobile device, bypassing the computer altogether. Designed for people already used to storing pics on phones and tablets, it works with a free iOS / Android app that acts as an image viewer. To set it up, you enter a 10-digit activation code included in the packaging, which you can use with as many gadgets as you like. After that, the card will continuously send photos and video to your device. And because the Mobi is a hotspot unto itself, your gear doesn’t all need to be on the same network, or even in range of a router.

The Mobi is available today, priced at $50 for 8GB and $80 for 16GB. For those of you who expect to do some heavy-duty editing, you can still buy Eye-Fi’s existing X2 cards, which send images to PCs, and can handle both RAW and JPEG. Additionally, those pro-level cards can be configured to send different file formats to different locations. If that seems like overkill, though, the Mobi might be the better option — it’s not like you can’t eventually get those photos off your phone, right?

Seagate ships 5mm Laptop Ultrathin hard drive to ASUS, Dell and more

Seagate ships 5mm Laptop Ultrathin hard drive

Western Digital may have been quick to release a 5mm hard drive, but it doesn’t have a lock on the category: Seagate is entering the fray by shipping its own slim disk, the Laptop Ultrathin. Like its rival, the drive stuffs as much as 500GB of conventional, rotating storage into SSD-like dimensions ideal for Ultrabooks and some tablets. It even costs the same $89 as its WD counterpart, although we’re more likely to find the disk built into our next PC than pick one up as an upgrade. Both ASUS and Dell have chosen the Laptop Ultrathin for new models, and we suspect they won’t be alone.

Acer announces Orbe: a wireless storage hub for its cloud service (update: hands-on photos)

Acer announces Orbe a wireless storage hub for its cloud service

On stage at Acer’s press event at Computex 2013 in Taipei, wrapping up a day of new Ultrabooks, tablets and smartphones, it revealed the Orbe, a new storage hub that connects to AcerCloud. You’ll be able to tap into 2TB of storage with the curiously-shaped device, which will connect to… yep, Ultrabooks, tablets and smartphones — something that’s particularly useful given the cloud service’s relatively recent update allowing any Android or iOS device to connect. Unfortunately we have yet to dig up any more specs on the device, but you can take a closer look at the hardware in our hands-on photos below.
