Christmas Tinner Puts an Entire Christmas Dinner into a Single Can

If Willy Wonka suddenly decided to move out of the candy making business into the canned foods business, Christmas Tinner would be a product he would make. Perhaps inspired by Christopher Godfrey’s 12-course meal in a can, Christmas Tinner is a complete canned meal made by UK gaming firm GAME. Inside the can you will find an entire layered Christmas dinner.

The layers include scrambled eggs and bacon in the first, followed by a pair of minced pies in the second layer. The third layer is turkey and potatoes with gravy in the next layer. The fifth layer has bread sauce and layer six is cranberry sauce. Layer seven is brussel sprouts with stuffing or broccoli with stuffing. I assume this is what we would have as cornbread stuffing in the US. Layer eight is roast carrots and parsnips, with the final layer, number nine, being Christmas pudding.

While I’m sure it would all be quite tasty served in the traditional method, it all sounds pretty disgusting in canned form.

Foodini Home Food 3D Printer: Downloadable Delectibles

We’ve seen a variety of 3D printers designed to make food, but most of them either make only one kind of food or are designed for professional use, like serving astronauts in space. A company called Natural Machines is working on a food printer that will be easy enough for ordinary people to use and will be able to make a variety of dishes.

BBC reports that Natural Machines’ Foodini printer can combine up to six ingredients. Couple that with the ability to swap cartridges and you get a printer that can make a variety of food. But don’t expect the Foodini to be a do-it-all cook. As BBC notes, it can only combine ingredients and not actually cook them. Plus it can only make food using paste-like ingredients.

The Foodini may not make stoves, grills and ovens obsolete, but it could make it easier to prepare complex dishes. The thought of downloading recipes online also makes it easier to try new meals or prepare difficult ones that you may not have the time or skill to do on your own. Natural Machines chief executive Emilio Sepulveda estimates that the Foodini will cost around $1,400 (USD), although they didn’t say when they will release the printer.

Nolab Digital Cartridge Records Digital Videos from Super 8 Cameras: Because You Never Go Full Hipster

Kodak’s Super 8 Film system revolutionized home moviemaking, by making it much easier for people to buy and load film, jump-starting amateur film making, and eventually laying the groundwork for camcorders. Of course nowadays everyone with a smartphone or point-and-shoot can be a modern filmmaker. Designer Hayes Urban wants to make the old Super 8 cameras useful again, so he came up with a digital cartridge for the ancient gadgets.

Hayes’ Nolab is a device that fits into the film cartridge slot of Super 8 cameras. It has a 5mp OmniVision sensor and a custom glass objective lens. According to Hayes, “the sensor focuses on a ground glass image plane pressed against the camera’s film gate.” Nolab records 720p H.264 video with a 4:3 aspect ratio, the same native aspect ratio of Super 8 film. It will also have the ability to apply one of two color correction filters. The Nolab uses SD cards for storage and relies on a rechargeable battery for power.

Hayes claims that he and his partners already have a working prototype of the Nolab and indicates that the digital film cartridge will become a commercial product. Check out his website for more about his invention.

Thanko is a Japanese gadget firm that makes just about anything you can think of and a slew of things sane people wouldn’t think to plug their your USB ports. If you need a set of Santa boots to warm your feet using USB power, Thanko has it. If your boss is a bosshole, and you really need something to help get rid of the headache from listening to him prattle on about spelling and punctuation constantly causes you (maybe that’s just me) Thanko has a USB head massager. It looks as weird as you might expect it too. It will undoubtedly mess up your hair, and will do nothing to impress that cute girl that works down the hall.

What it will do is adjust to fit most domes, no matter how gargantuan, and vibrate when plugged in. The idea is that it will help get rid of stress. If you need to use it and you don’t have a USB port, it can be powered by batteries.

Crowdsourced Reward Offered for Open Source iOS 7 Jailbreak: Codestarter

A small group of DMCA activists and device accessibility advocates are raising funds to reward anyone who comes up with an free, open source and untethered iOS 7 jailbreak. In case you’re not familiar with the term, jailbreaking iOS devices opens it up to software modifications that Apple would never officially allow. They can be as big as file managers, new gesture commands and even shortcut settings (which Apple clearly copied in iOS 7).

The prize was the idea of Chris Maury, an entrepreneur who believes that iOS devices will be more useful to disabled people if combined with jailbreak apps. The other proponents of the fundraiser are Boing Boing editor and author Cory Doctorow, iFixit co-founder and CEO Kyle Wiens and professor and author Biella Coleman.  Head to the fundraiser’s website if you want to donate or check out the criteria for submissions.

NASA’s Hilarious Response to Mentos and Coke Rocket Proposal

NASA is always out to find new way to propel their rockets. One enterprising geek apparently took it upon himself to send NASA a proposal to power a rocket with a “shit load of Coke” and a bunch of Mentos. Clearly, the letter was meant as a joke, but NASA Associate Administrator Steven Malkovich took the time to respond.

mentosnasa 620x610magnify

Malkovich told the sender, one Mr. Jones, that it had no interest in his rocket proposal. NASA says there is no practical use for the tech, even if they used a “shit load” of Coke as Mr. Jones suggested. My favorite part of the NASA response is where they point out it takes years of training to become an astronaut.

Mr. Jones had apparently said that he wanted to be a “spaceman” and that it appeared to be so simple even a chimp could do it. You can click the image of the letter to get a better look at the text for yourself. I’m now crafting a much better plan to fuel rockets involving feeding astronauts a steady diet of Taco Bell Chilitos and a flatulence capturing apparatus.

Built in 1912, the steel and brass safe is currently located in Basel, Switzerland. The actual room itself is up for grabs, along with all 1619 safe deposit boxes, and as a bonus of sorts, it will come with coins that weigh fifteen tons for your ogling and swimming pleasure.

“This is the original bank safe from the former “Schweizer Volksbank” and known to be one of the finest Swiss piece of craftwork in the early 20th Century. It is in very good shape and still usable as a bank deposit safe.”

When (or if) someone buys it, the entire safe, along with its contents, will be moved and installed anywhere in the world. Neat-o.

This gives new meaning to the phrases “drowning in riches” and “neck-deep in money.”

Researchers Find Massive Lost Japanese WWII Submarine Near Hawaii

There is nothing cool about war in the real world, but I am a fan of movies and stories about what went on during WWII. I’ve seen more than a few movies that show submarines used in WWII. Honestly, I thought the Germans and their U-boats were the only subs. It turns out that the Japanese had a number of submarines too.

i 400 submarine 620x330magnify

Close to the end of WWII, the Allies captured five submarines and brought them back to Pearl Harbor for inspection. One of the captured subs was a massive beast called the I-400. It was a Sen-Toku class sub rivaled is size only by modern nuclear submarines. The I-400 was 400 feet long and carried enough fuel to transverse the world 1.5 times before refueling.

After the war was over, Russia wanted access to the subs. With the cold war heating up, the US didn’t want to give Russia access to the tech inside the Japanese submarines and they scuttled the I-400 in 1946 – promptly forgetting where it was sunk. A group of researchers from the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) has been searching for the sunken subs for years and finally found the I-400 in off the coast of Hawaii. The discovery was made in shallower water than expected last August, but was just announced this week. Check out the video footage below to see their first sighting of the sub:

“The I-400 has been on our ‘to-find’ list for some time,” said veteran undersea explorer Terry Kerby, who led the expedition that found the submarine. “It was the first of its kind of only three built, so it is a unique and very historic submarine.”
