TiVo’s new Roamio DVRs include six tuners, streams your favorite TV anywhere

TiVo's new Roamio DVRs include six tuners and integrated out of home streaming

The dream of watching whatever we want, wherever we want, just got one step closer with the new “Roamio” DVR platform from TiVo. Also known as the Series 5, the Roamio family includes a revamped user interface, up to six tuners and 3TB of storage. That’s certainly enough space and tuners to record almost anything you might want, save for maybe the 4K director’s cuts of Lord of the Rings. Perhaps more exciting, though, is the addition of out-of-home streaming. The Roamio Plus and Pro both include integrated TiVo Stream functionality, except it’s not limited to the confines of your home network any longer — an update will bring this to the existing TiVo Stream first, while Roamio customers will have to wait a bit longer. The other new update — also coming to existing hardware — is the long-awaited dynamic tuner allocation for the TiVo Mini, which frees up more tuners for recording and expands the new room limit to nine. What to Watch Now is coming to TiVo Central and there are new guide filters to help you find stuff to watch. Last but not least, there’s a new HTML5 engine that powers a fresh YouTube app and Netflix app has received a minor update as well.

All three models also include a new RF remote as well as WiFi (finally!), but only the top two feature MoCA. You can pre-order the Roamio, Roamio Plus or Roamio Pro now for $199, $399, and $599, respectively (plus service). If you want to know more, then don’t miss our full review. %Gallery-slideshow73096%

Barnes & Noble NOOK Video app arrives on iOS, Android, and Roku

Every big internet company has a movie and TV show store it seems, and Barnes & Noble certainly doesn’t have a problem joining in on the already-saturated market. The company announced NOOK Video almost a year ago, and they’re just now bringing the service to iOS, Android, and Roku streaming devices for free. The new […]

Barnes & Noble posts Nook Video apps for Android, iOS and Roku

Barnes & Noble launches Nook Video app for regular Android devices, iOS and Roku

Now that Barnes & Noble is backing away from producing its own Nook tablets, it has less incentive to keep Nook Video as an exclusive. Accordingly, it’s opening things up by launching Nook Video apps for ordinary Android devices, iOS and Roku boxes. Like on Barnes & Noble’s own hardware, the new apps let US viewers buy or rent movies for streaming; users can also watch any content stored in their UltraViolet collections. The releases may not get customers leaving one of the many existing alternative services, but those who already have an investment in Nook Video can grab an appropriate app at one of the source links.

Aircast Turns Chromecast into an Android AirPlay

Chromecast is great, except for the part where your streaming options are pretty limited. They’re getting better by the day, but soon, it’ll all be a non-issue; a new app called Aircast, can already push all your videos to Chromecast.

AirCast for Android sends local or cloud videos to Chromecast, test it out now

AirCast for Android sends local or cloud videos to Chromecast, test it out now

ClockworkMod dev Koushik Dutta has teased us with a few interesting ways to get our own media streaming on Chromecast, but now he’s actually releasing one to the public. AirCast runs on your Android device and streams video from the gallery, Dropbox or Google Drive to Google dongle, with playback controls available in the app or from the notification bar. So why is this ready for release now? According to the developer, he’s reverse engineered the protocols and is no longer using the SDK. Still, the app is just in testing now and he warns that the button doesn’t appear in gallery apps on some devices, including the HTC One. It will stop working on its own after a couple of days while Dutta works the kinks out, look below for links to the download or more information, and check out a video demo after the break.

Homebrew Kinect app steers Chromecast streams through gestures (update: source code)

Homemade app uses Kinect to steer Chromecast streams video

Chromecast may deliver on promises of sending wire-free video to TVs, but it’s not hands-free — or at least, it wasn’t. Leon Nicholls has unveiled a homemade Kinect app for the desktop that gives him gesture-based control of videos playing through Google’s streaming stick. While there’s just two commands at this point, Nicholls hopes to open-source the code in the near future; this isn’t the end of the road. If you can’t wait that long, though, there’s a quick demonstration available after the break.

Update: A few days later, Nicholls has posted the source code for his project; you’ll need to whitelist your Chromecast for development to use it.

Microsoft axing Zune Marketplace rentals and sales, recommends Xbox Video and Music

Coinciding with the impending abandonment of Microsoft Points, the ability to rent and purchase media from Zune Marketplace will also be hitting retirement come August 22nd. A recently-posted FAQ on the Xbox website details the changes, directing current users to hurry up and use their remaining points as they’ll be worthless come that EOL date. For future service Microsoft is unsurprisingly pointing users to Xbox Music and Video, noting that the latter will also be accessible on Xbox One, Windows Phone 8 and browsers “later this year.” Unlimited streaming will be accessible through the Xbox Music Pass as you’d expect, and your existing media will continue to function as normal. Better yet, OG Zune Music Pass subscribers will still be able to stream tunes and obtain their 10 free downloads per month. Consider it another inevitable nail in the Zune brand’s coffin, while it lives on through Xbox.

Syfy Now app streams full episodes to iOS today, Android next month

The Syfy for iPhone app is relaunching as SyFy Now, while the old Syfy app for iPad is reborn as Syfy Sync, dedicated solely to the network’s second screen ambitions. Why the changes? Now is all about TV Everywhere with streaming of full episodes of Syfy’s original series the day after they air and bookmarks that sync across devices with iCloud. This app can’t put Alphas back on the air, but it can bring Defiance, Robot Combat League and Being Human to wherever you are, assuming you have a compatible TV provider. At launch, customers with Armstrong, AT&T U-Verse, Cablevision’s Optimum TV service, Charter, Comcast’s Xfinity TV, DISH, Mediacom, Suddenlink, Verizon FiOS, and Wide Open West (WOW) are ready to go, and others are coming soon.

Don’t have authentication? The show clips and behind the scenes video previously featured in the app are still available. Syfy’s app for Android isn’t updated yet (and still isn’t ready for the new Nexus 7) but the press release promises Now will launch there in September — hopefully the network can figure out how to include TV movies like Sharknado 2 in the package by then.
