BBC iPlayer viewing on tablets overtakes that on phones

BBC iPlayer viewing on tablets overtakes that on phones

When we think of BBC iPlayer use on mobile devices, we most often picture someone catching up on dramas with their smartphone during the commute home. Not anymore: newly available March stats from the Beeb reveal that tablet viewing has overtaken phone viewing for the first time. The difference is slight — tablets are only 200,000 requests ahead, at 41 million — but it’s enough to suggest that many now prefer bigger screens when they’re away from a computer or TV. While the broadcaster hasn’t directly explained the change in demographics, it’s not hard to see a possible explanation based on viewer habits. The BBC notes that most tablet-bound iPlayer users watch TV, and most iPlayer TV time overlaps that of traditional viewing, when audiences are more likely to be at home with the larger devices at hand. If you’re one to curl up on the couch to watch Panorama on an iPad or Android slate, then, you may just be part of a growing trend.

NASA live-streaming six-hour ISS spacewalk right now

This isn’t the first time that NASA has live-streamed a spacewalk, but we certainly don’t get treated to them very often. Today, NASA is live streaming a six-hour spacewalk aboard the International Space Station, as two Russian cosmonauts venture their way out into deep, dark space to fix a broken reflector and install weather monitoring equipment on the exterior of the station.

Screen Shot 2013-04-19 at 11.10.49 AM

The spacewalk will last a total of six hours, and it’s going on right now, and you can view what the cosmonauts are seeing thanks to their helmet cameras, and you can also hear the audio transmission between the two cosmonauts and the mission control on the ground, which is pretty neat. Pavel Vinogradov and Roman Romanenko are the two cosmonauts making the spacewalk.

The spacewalkers will be tasked with installing what’s called the Obstanovka experiment on the exterior of the station’s Zvezda service module. The equipment will study plasma waves and the effect of space weather on Earth’s ionosphere. They will also retrieve the Biorisk experiment, which studied the effect of microbes on spacecraft structures.

The cosmonauts will also replace a faulty retro-reflector device, which is just one of the navigational aids that provides assistance to the European Space Agency’s Albert Einstein Automated Transfer Vehicle 4 cargo ship, where it will automatically dock to the space station later in June.

Amazon releases all 14 original series pilots for free

We heard back in December that Amazon would be releasing a slew of pilot episodes for the company’s original series initiative in order to compete with Netflix. It turns out that there are 14 pilot episodes in total, and all of them are available now for streaming for free. Amazon will be accepting viewer feedback to narrow the pack down to just a handful of shows.

Screen Shot 2013-04-19 at 10.39.49 AM

We’ve already heard about a couple of them in the past, one being a Zombieland original series, as well as a geek-oriented comedy called Betas. Both pilots of these shows are available now, as well as 12 other shows split between the comedy genre and children’s variety. The six children’s shows include Annebots, Creative Galaxy, Positively Ozitively, Sara Solves It, Teeny Tiny Dogs, and Tumbleaf.

As for the remaining comedies not already mentioned, there’s Alpha House, Browsers, Dark Minions, Onion News Empire, Supanatural, and Those Who Can’t. You can watch all 14 episodes right now, but you’ll need an Amazon Prime account if you don’t have one already. You’ll get free two-day shipping, as well as access to Amazon Instant Video.

As for how many shows Amazon wants to begin producing, it seems that the company’s goal is to get half of the 14 shows currently available ordered up for a full season of about 13 episodes each. However, there’s no set number that Amazon has decided on, and it could turn out that even less than seven shows end up getting picked, so be sure to submit your feedback if you want to see the episodes you like continue on.

Netflix’s latest original series ‘Hemlock Grove’ is available for streaming

Netflix's latest original series 'Hemlock Grove' now available for streaming

Netflix’s original content assault continues today with the debut of Hemlock Grove, a “supernatural” series directed by Eli Roth. This series takes place in a small Pennsylvania town which has suddenly come down with a bad case of werewolf attacks. Previous releases Lilyhammer and House of Cards chased viewers interested in quirky foreign humor and political drama, respectively, so this series represents a bit of a shift. Later this year, the streaming service will debut Orange is the New Black from Weeds creator Jenji Kohan and the second season of Lilyhammer. Cards is also due for a second season, and sci-fi fans have Sense8 to look forward to in 2014.

We’ll see if its data-based approach to picking series has found another quality option in Hemlock Grove, however early reviews suggest that may not be the case for all viewers. Hitfix’s Alan Sepinwall referred to it as a “streakbuster” between Cards and the upcoming season of Arrested Development, and a New York Times evaluation of the first few eps notes “it barely gets around to telling its story.” Of course, it may just be targeted to viewers with different priorities, who will appreciate its style more than they did, and the company’s algorithms are just waiting to dig those people out of the crowd. Whatever the case, with Netflix’s characteristic all-episodes-at-once release schedule you can power through all 13 episodes and find out for yourself right now.

Sky Go for Android now streams to the HTC One, Galaxy S 4 and Xperia Z

Sky Go for Android now supports 1080p phones and the RAZR HD

Brits accustomed to catching up on their shows with Sky Go likely don’t want that seamless viewing experience broken just because they bought that latest 1080p-capable Android flagship. Thankfully, they won’t have to. An update to the Android app now supports the HTC One, Xperia Z and the upcoming Galaxy S 4: while none of them will stream in 1080p, the software will at last do more than take up space. Those on the “merely” 720p-native RAZR HD can also tune in with the upgrade. Swing by Google Play for the update if you’re a Sky subscriber with a shiny new device.

Sky Movies lands deal with Entertainment Film Distributors to stream top movies

Sky Movies strikes deal with Entertainment Film Distributors to stream top movies

The core of any good movie service is… good movies. We’re glad to hear, then, that Sky Movies has struck a years-long deal with UK outlet Entertainment Film Distributors to stream a large number of recent and back-catalog titles. The pact gives Sky access to Silver Linings Playbook and a slew of other notable movies during the initial pay-per-view and pay TV windows, which usually start six months after the releases leave theaters and last for over a year. The agreement isn’t so hot for those on rival services when Sky has an exclusive on subscription access, but its viewing is at least independent of both the platform and business model: customers can see the newly added flicks through a Now TV pass on their phones or rent them through the Sky Movies Box Office, for example. Older included titles like Gangs of New York are already available; if you’ve been waiting for Sky to get a healthier video selection before signing up, now’s as good a time as any to take a closer look.

Deezer launches on Windows 8, streams music with Charms and Snaps (video)

Deezer streaming music launches on Windows 8

Deezer has had an obsession with new apps lately, redesigning its Android app and kicking off its mini-app platform on mobile devices. It’s only fair that Windows 8 users get to join in with a new Deezer app of their own. The software offers the same mix of curated and on-demand streaming music as elsewhere, with a few accommodations for Microsoft’s universe: listeners can use Charms to search or share their music, and multitaskers can rely on Snap to keep an eye on their tracks. Early Windows 8 adopters have free, ad-backed access to music for up to a full year, which is as good as incentive as any to give the app a whirl if they live in a Deezer-friendly territory.

Spotify launches in 8 new markets

Spotify is expanding to more locations throughout the world today. The music streaming service announced today that users in Mexico, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Iceland, bringing Spotify’s reach to 28 markets around the world. The expansion should increase the service’s total number of users.

QuLiJ11

Currently, Spotify has over 25 million users, where free users can stream up to 40 hours of music per week, while unlimited subscribers obviously don’t have a limit, nor do they have to deal with ads. Currently, Spotify has over 6 million paid subscribers, and we’re sure that number will grow now that more markets have access to the streaming music service.

Spotify says that they aim to be available anywhere, but expanding to that point will take time. The company ultimately wants to be available in Asia completely, with today’s expansion in Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore a good start. The continent is a hotbed for internet users, where many online services report having the most users.

Of course, today’s expansions are merely just stepping stones for Spotify in their quest to become available all around the world, but it seems they’re confident in getting to that point in the foreseeable future. The same features are available to international users, including both free and premium subscription options.

Thanks to HTML5, Streaming Movies on Netflix Might Suck Less

Netflix currently uses Microsoft’s Silverlight plugin to run its streams. It’s an inelegant solution that sometimes makes for subpar and bogged down streaming experiences. But Silverlight is possibly dying! And Netflix wants to get better! So Netflix is planning to move on from streaming on Silverlight and move towards HTML5 video. When that happens, streaming movies on Netflix might suck less. More »
