Study Claims the Avatar You Use for Gaming May Affect Your Real World Behavior

A very strange new study has been published by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign that tries to link the behavior of gamers in the real world to the avatars they use on gaming services. The study took 194 undergrad students and got them to play a game where they were assigned one of three avatars. The avatars were either heroic (superman), villainous (Lord Voldemort), or neutral in the form of a circle.

After playing the game, the students participated in another study. In this study, the student had to taste and then give either chocolate or chili sauce to a future participant. The study showed that the players who were assigned the Superman avatar overwhelmingly chose to give future participants chocolate. On the other hand, the players assigned the evil avatar more often chose to give the chili sauce.

The study participants generally claimed equivalent levels of self-identification with heroic and villainous avatars, so they weren’t aware that the avatars were influencing their attitudes. Of course, correlation does not imply causation, so it could just be that the meaner people happened to be selected as Voldermorts.

Study Finds Mobile Data Consumption Up By 80% From Last Year

mobile-dataMany years ago before 3G became widely available, most of us were surfing on 2G/EDGE internet speeds, which while slow, got the job done. Then again our phones back in the day weren’t exactly designed for surfing the internet in mind although it did have the feature. Fast forward to today where we are starting to see LTE become more widely available, and in some cases even LTE-A. That being said with our mobile internet being faster, and in some cases faster than what we get back home, it is no surprise to learn that mobile data consumption has actually increased by 80% over last year.

This is according to Akamai who managed to get their data from Ericsson who has a presence in over 180 countries and on over 1,000 networks, and as there was no sampling of users, all the data compiled by Akamai was raw data taken from hard numbers. Unsurprisingly Akamai found that South Korea was leading the way with average Mbps and we can only expect those numbers to rise as the country deploys LTE-A networks in the near future. Pretty interesting stats, what do you guys think? Do you agree that over the past few years you have started to consume more data than ever?

Study Suggests Android Has A “Weak Gravity”

Study Suggests Android Has A Weak GravityWithout doubt Android is the leading smartphone platform at the moment, followed by the iPhone. This is thanks to Android devices being manufactured by multiple vendors, and also because of how some users find Android more “open” to customization and tweaks, versus the iPhone which is pretty much what you see is what you get, unless you were to jailbreak it. Android phones also range from being affordable to expensive, so for the first time smartphone owner, a cheaper phone would be a good way to see if they enjoy the platform. However according to a recent study by Foolproof, it has been found that the Android platform had a “weak gravity”, suggesting that Android users who start with Android eventually find themselves drifting towards iOS. Microsoft More Trusted Than Apple According To Study

Microsoft More Trusted Than Apple According To StudyWith all the paranoia and news that the NSA’s PRISM program has caused, how much trust can you place in tech companies these days? For the most part, most, if not all, tech companies have denied working with the NSA in allowing their products to be easily hacked into to gather information, but we guess there are many who remain skeptical. Well interestingly enough despite the paranoia and mistrust many are having about their favorite tech companies, a recent study has found that as far as tech companies that consumers trusted, Microsoft was at the very forefront, which the folks at Forrester who did the research admitted that it came as quite a surprise. Mac Sales Experience Increase Last Quarter While PC Sales Take A Dip

Mac Sales Experience Increase Last Quarter While PC Sales Take A DipAs most of you guys know, Apple’s Mac computers don’t quite have the same market share as their Windows competitors. There are many reasons for it, such as Windows computers being more affordable, more familiar, and also having more software available for it that is used by professionals around the world. However Apple’s Mac computers are slowly gaining traction, thanks to a research by Gartner where it was found that Apple’s Mac computer sales have actually increased by 28.5% in the last quarter, while PC sales actually found themselves going down and have actually shrunk by 7.5%!

Of course given the PC’s market share and the Mac’s market share, the PC is still very much in the lead, although it does look like Apple is playing catchup, albeit slowly. It was found that as far as PC vendors were concerned, companies such as Toshiba and HP saw themselves making a loss of 13.9% and 10.3% respectively, while companies such as Dell and Lenovo found their sales going up a modest 7.4% and 3.5% respectively. Some are blaming tablets as one of the reasons that PC sales have gone down. With tablets being generally cheaper and portable, those buying PCs for simple use, such as watching movies and surfing the web, might turn to a tablet instead.

There’s no telling if Apple’s Mac computers will be able to continue this momentum. It is possible that the surge in sales could be attributed to the holiday season, which was admittedly true as far as tablets were concerned.

Controversial “Study” Finds That iPhone Users Are “Smarter”

Controversial Study Finds That iPhone Users Are SmarterWhen it comes to choosing a smartphone platform, there are definitely stereotypes involved and that’s definitely a debate for another time, but according to a recent study, which is sure to raise a few eyebrows and spark some intense arguments, it seems that iPhone users are found to be smarter compared to other brands and platforms. This is a study conducted by British betting company, Ladbrokes. The test involved about 1,000 respondees where they were first asked which smartphone were they using, followed by a series of questions involving problem solving, pattern recognition, and other brain teasers.

The results found that iPhone owners had the quickest wits and an average completion time of 94 seconds. Unfortunately it was found that BlackBerry users did the worst and were the slowest with a completion time of 118 seconds. Samsung users did slightly better with an average completion time of 103 seconds. Like we said this is a study bound to cause arguments and is pretty controversial, but it’s hardly a scientific study and as an Android user, I hardly found it to be offensive. One of the reasons the test should not be taken seriously is also because there is no penalty for wrong answers as users could simply keep clicking until they got the right one.

In any case it’s just a fun quiz that you can use to poke fun at your BlackBerry friends with, depending on which platform you are using, and should definitely not be taken seriously!
