Microsoft just sent out invitations for an event in New York City on Monday September 23rd, two weeks from today. It will be showing off the new Surface. Which is to say, it’s going to be showing us the future of Microsoft.
Despite Microsoft’s Surface tablets, both RT and Pro, garnering mixed, if not mostly negative, reviews, the company seems to be intent on continuing the line, with rumors of a next generation Surface Pro tablet in the works. If so, Microsoft seems to be learning from its and others’ mistakes and is planning to release a […]
Surface Power Cover rumored to ship after the Surface 2, provide the whole family with extra juice
Posted in: Today's ChiliDespite Microsoft’s claims that the Surface family of tablets was a representation of “no compromise,” many road warriors have found the battery life to be… well, compromised. In order to address said concerns, it’s looking as if Microsoft will be launching a line of Power Covers. In a nutshell, these battery-inclusive Type Covers will snap onto Surface tablets as the existing ones do now, but a bump in thickness (from 0.21-inches to 0.38-inches) will add “significant” life. Interestingly, WinSupersite is reporting that the covers won’t ship until after the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, and the original Surface RT won’t be compatible. Oh, and as for pricing? Mum’s the word, as you might expect for an unconfirmed accessory.

We’ve known for a while that Microsoft is working on a successor to its Surface Pro tablet, something that will hopefully better meet consumers’ expectations after the company experienced less than anticipated enthusiasm for its Windows 8 tablet. Details on the tablet have surfaced, among them being a Haswell processor, more memory, and an improved […]
Microsoft has been going absolutely insane with the amount of discounts they’ve been offering to potential Surface RT and Surface Pro customers. We saw the Surface RT get its price cut by $150 in July, and the Surface Pro’s price was cut down by $100 for a limited time. It appears the limited-time $100 discount on the Surface Pro will no longer be the case as Microsoft is announcing the price cut is here to stay. (more…)

The temporary price cut that Microsoft made to its Surface tablets earlier this month will be permanent, it has been revealed, leaving both the Surface Pro and the Surface RT varieties of the tablets — as well as the Touch Cover — a fair bit cheaper. The price change isn’t instantaneous, however, with the company […]
Microsoft’s foray into the tablet market the second time around (remember the tablet PC that did not take off all those years ago?) is not exactly a happy experience, as both the Surface RT and the Surface Pro has yet to achieve the kind of crazy sales figures which would make an Apple executive proud. Still, this does not mean that Microsoft has given up the good fight, having rolled out firmware updates for the Surface RT and Surface Pro as recently as this week. For those of you who do not think much of the Surface Pro, perhaps seeing what a certain Keith Elder has done with his might change your mind.
Elder happens to be a Director of Software Engineering at Quicken Loans during the day, and his project concerning the Surface Pro is something worth checking out – this rather diminutive tablet has been hooked up to a quartet of generous sized PC monitors, by hooking up the Surface Pro’s USB 3.0 port to a $95 Plugable USB 3.0 docking station. This is followed up by connecting the right number of Plugable UGA-3000 video adapters to the docking station, and you have a four monitor workstation which is ready and raring to go, with the Surface Pro being the “brains” behind everything. This might take some work, and it definitely is no replacement for a gaming machine, but the possibility of it as a casual email/Facebook machine is very real.

Just last month, Microsoft introduced a new firmware update for their Surface RT tablet which admittedly, has not fared as well as expected in the market. Well, I guess Microsoft has been in such a situation before with their original Xbox console that didn’t make much headway, if any, in Japan, but they persevered and the Xbox 360 did a whole lot better in comparison after that. Here we are with word that Microsoft has just introduced a new firmware update for both the Surface RT tablet as well as the Surface Pro tablet, which would be part of the monthly Patch Tuesday event.
The Surface RT patch notes point out that the UEFI firmware update was specially designed in order to improve the tablet’s audio capability even when its volume levels have been set to low. Not only that, this update will also fix what Microsoft called a “perceived pulsing” in the audio volume whenever the Surface RT happens to run on selected content, while the updated drivers help to “enhance stability and reliability.”
As for the Surface Pro, both the UEFI and System Aggregator firmware have been improved, so the entire system should be more stable and reliable. Have you patched up your respective Surface tablet already?

It’s not that often when you see a hero product cut down to size, so to speak, less than a year into its lifespan in the wild. What we’ve got here is a reaction to Microsoft’s low sales numbers in both the Surface Pro and Surface (with Windows RT) sales in the first segment of […]
Last month rumors were circulating that Microsoft would be slashing the prices of its Surface RT tablets. Indeed it did, a couple of weeks ago the company announced that Surface RT prices were being cut by as much as 30 percent all around the globe. At that time there was no indication that the Surface Pro tablet would also see a price cut. The Verge now reports that Microsoft has confirmed to them a $100 price cut for both 64GB and 128GB Surface Pro tablets. The price cut will be in place for U.S., Hong Kong, Canada and China.
It remains to be seen if this price cut is permanent. As per the company’s statement, customers in the aforementioned markets will be able to pick up a Surface RT for $100 less between August 4th and August 29th. For all we know, Microsoft may extend the price cut and may even apply it in other markets as well. This may be viewed as a move to drive sales or to clear inventory. There have been rumors that the company is working on its next generation Surface tablets, but no one has any idea right now when they will be launched.
