In light of the new Surface 2, Microsoft has made some interesting claims regarding its tablet competition to the folks over at Tech Radar, where the company seems to take a passive swipe at Apple while saying that others are playing catch-up. Microsoft isn’t the only company to be pushing out its big-name tablet offerings […]
Earlier this year in July, we saw how Microsoft reduced the price of its Surface RT tablet (which is now simply known as Surface) by a whopping $150 in an effort to boost its flagging sales figures. That plans must have worked, or the statistics could have been massaged, but Microsoft was proud to announce that in the for the third quarter of 2013 (which happens to be July to September) sales of Surface tablets have actually more than doubled in comparison to the second quarter of this year.
According to Microsoft’s chief financial officer Amy Hood, that particular statement was made as part of the company’s quarterly financial conference call with analysts earlier this morning. Microsoft did make an announcement earlier on that revenues from the Surface device family amounted to some $400 million for the quarter, which is quite a large jump when you compare it to the $853 million in revenue that occurred from the tablet’s launch in late October 2012 all the way to the end of June 2013. Of course, we still do not know just how many Surface tablets were sold during the third quarter, so exact figures would always be better to give us a more accurate picture of the situation.

It has been a couple of days since the Microsoft Surface 2 as well as Surface Pro 2 has made its way to the US as well as another 20 countries, but I am quite sure that all of those are no larger than the regular tablet size. Why do I say this? If you happen to walk by the historic Trafalgar Square in London, there is no way you are going to miss this massive Surface 2 which has been constructed to measure 17-feet tall as well as 27-feet wide. This particular monument to the Surface 2 tablet comes complete with a purple Type Cover 2 which allows you to actually step on, as well as type with, now how about that for interactivity? I am quite sure that both adults and kids alike would find this particular installation fun to spend time with, especially when it comes to playing alphabet games on the massive keyboard and screen.
Just for some context on how large it can be, it measures 33” across diagonally, which is approximately three dozen times larger compared to the actual Surface 2 tablet. Interestingly enough, the entire shebang took just 12 hours to build, and the huge screen is controlled by a single Surface tablet.

The industrious folks at iFixit have taken to tearing into Microsoft’s Surface Pro 2, putting it through the same dismantling process the Kindle Fire HDX, iMac 2013, and other devices have recently undergone. Unfortunately, those who grab the Microsoft slate are going to have quite a battle if they ever elect to go the DIY […]
The war is on for the most sought-after tablet on the market, and the differentiation between the front-runners appears now, more than ever, to be strikingly high. What we’ve got from Apple is the iPad Air, a new far-smaller iteration of the same Retina display as the 4th generation unit. From Google there’s the Nexus […]

Don’t you just love concepts? We absolutely do. After all, when it comes to concepts, one does not have to think too much when it comes to hardware and software limitations at the moment, since you can go totally wild with your imagination, and let the engineers sort out whatever issues that would arise after that. It is fr this particular reason that we are interested in this short video that Microsoft released, where it depicted how a group of students over at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, were recruited simply to tap into their brains as they came up with concepts for “blades”. These “blades” happen to be the accessories which are able to hook up to the Surface range of tablets.
The video does offer a rather fascinating look into how these students were able to work all the way from concepts with their initial designs drawn on paper, to crude mock ups that came in a variety of shapes and sizes. Hey, isn’t variety the spice of life after all? Depending on which student you were to concentrate on, some of them came with a keyboard, while others had more interesting items such as a percussion and DJ set-up, an artist tool kit, a solar panel, a cash register and even a method so that a couple of folks are able to view a video in a 3D space. Will these concepts make it eventually to the market? Perhaps, but Microsoft does not have that much time to dabble around in the highly competitive tablet market space.
