Microsoft Surface 2 To Appear On September 23rd

Microsoft Surface 2 To Appear On September 23rd

Over the past few weeks we’ve heard a number of rumors about Microsoft’s next generation tablets. The company has finally revealed when it intends to unveil the new Surface tablets. The Surface 2 launch event takes place on September 23rd in New York City, Microsoft sent invites to the media today. It was rumored that perhaps Microsoft will also launch a Surface mini tablet this year, but according to various sources, that device is not going to be unveiled on September 23rd.

The design of Microsoft’s next generation tablets is expected to be similar to the existing Surface tablets. The Surface Pro 2 is expected to get Intel’s new Haswell processors and 8GB of RAM. A refined kickstand is rumored for both Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets. A recent rumor suggests that a docking station might also be unveiled, the station would allow Surface Pro 2 to be connected to an external display. For the entry level tablet, Microsoft has apparently gone with NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 processor and a 1080p HD display. It is expected to drop the “RT” label, even though it will run on Windows 8.1 RT. Now that the launch event date has officially been announced, we can start counting down the days until Microsoft shows us how it has made the Surface tablets better.

Surface 2 rumors point to 1080p screen, Tegra 4 chip and two-stage kickstand

Surface 2 rumors point to 1080p screen, Tegra 4 and white model

We’ve seen rumors of new Surface covers and docks; now, it’s time for rumors regarding the tablets themselves. Both Neowin and WinSuperSite claim that the next-generation Surface with Windows RT will simply be called the Surface 2, and should represent a performance boost rather than a complete reinvention. In addition to the already confirmed Tegra 4 processor, the new Microsoft slate reportedly includes a sharper 1080p display and 4GB of RAM in an otherwise familiar design. The only noticeable changes to the form factor would be a more flexible two-stage kickstand and a white option, according to tipsters. There’s no word on when the Surface 2 might reach stores, although the mid-October launch of Windows 8.1 would certainly be convenient. We’ll likely find out more at the September 23rd event.

Dock For Microsoft’s Surface Tablets Is Apparently In The Pipeline

Dock For Microsofts Surface Tablets Is Apparently In The Pipeline

As per rumors, Microsoft might launch its new Surface tablets later this year. The Surface Pro 2 tablet is expected to have more RAM, Intel’s latest Haswell processor and a refined kickstand. It is now being said that the company may also release a dock for its new tablet. The dock will apparently allow the user to attach Surface Pro 2 to an external display. Attaching keyboards and other peripherals might also be easy since the dock is said to have three USB ports as well. At this point in time it is not known exactly when this dock will be released and what it will cost. One can assume that it will be released alongside the new tablet, or soon after.

The dock will enable customers to have a better and complete desktop experience with the tablet. Rumor has it that this dock will also work with the existing Microsoft Surface Pro tablet. Microsoft hasn’t revealed as yet when it intends on releasing the next generation Surface tablets. The Surface Pro 2 isn’t expected to see any price cuts and it is said to have the same design as its predecessor. Microsoft had said earlier this year that it has no plans to create a dock for its tablets, if these reports are true, then it has evidently changed its mind.

Latest Surface Pro accessory rumor points to a desktop dock

DNP Desktop dock rumors swirl for Microsoft's Surface Pro tablets

Microsoft is supposedly working on a desktop docking station that’s compatible exclusively with Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2 slates (following yesterday’s rumor of a battery packing keyboard cover), according to reports from Neowin and WinSuperSite. So what could the Docking Station bring the Pro and its (still unannounced) sequel? Possibly, USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports as well as gigabit Ethernet and audio in / outs. Even if your typical workflow requires multiple monitors, Redmond has you covered thanks to an external video output. These are box-standard features on any recent PC, sure, but they could help fix the issues we had with the Pro’s basic usability. We don’t have price or availability info, but there’s likely an announcement coming soon — we are over a year out from the Windows 8 tab’s reveal, after all.

Microsoft Surface Mini Rumored To Be In The Pipeline

Microsoft Surface Mini Rumored To Be In The PipelineYes, what looks like the upcoming Surface Pro 2 (or there has also been talk of the Surface 2, depending on which particular school of thought you belong to – whether Microsoft will roll out one or two tablets down the road) has been spotted in a patent filing, but here we are with whispers of Microsoft actually mulling over the possibility of rolling out the Microsoft Surface Mini tablet which, if realized, will be launched in the future as well.

So far, we only have heard rumors concerning a 7” or 8” Surface tablet that is in the pipeline, because that happens to be one of the first features that was made known in the Windows 8.1 update, touting that support for smaller sized tablets is on its way. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft would be the ones behind the manufacturing of the rumored Microsoft Surface Mini, but considering the fact that Microsoft swallowed up Nokia recently, for them to churn out hardware of their own does seem to be extremely plausible. Other than an alleged name of the Microsoft Surface Mini, we do not have any other additional information concerning the Surface Mini. It remains to be seen whether it will feature a similarly sized kickstand as with its siblings, or the exact size of the display, and neither do we have an idea on whether it will feature specially sized Touch or Type Covers as accessories.

New Surface Pro Power Cover tipped to have built-in battery

Despite Microsoft’s Surface tablets, both RT and Pro, garnering mixed, if not mostly negative, reviews, the company seems to be intent on continuing the line, with rumors of a next generation Surface Pro tablet in the works. If so, Microsoft seems to be learning from its and others’ mistakes and is planning to release a […]
