T-Mobile Will No Longer Offer BlackBerry Devices In Their Stores

T Mobile Will No Longer Offer BlackBerry Devices In Their StoresEarlier this month it was rumored that T-Mobile was thinking about removing BlackBerry devices from their retail stores due to poor sales. As it turns out the rumor was true after all as BlackBerry has since confirmed to Reuters that they will no longer be offering BlackBerry devices via their retail stores in the future. According to David Carey, the executive vice president for corporate services at T-Mobile, he claims that “keeping stock in the retail distribution system was inefficient” as BlackBerry devices weren’t exactly in high demand.

For T-Mobile customers who are looking to get BlackBerry devices from T-Mobile, they will still be available for purchase online although with the carrier dropping BlackBerry from its retail stores, we expect it might be a matter of time before support is dropped altogether. As it stands BlackBerry is looking to be bought out and hopes to be taken private to sort out their problems. Fairfax Financial is a likely candidate as BlackBerry has signed a letter of intent with the company worth $4.7 billion. At this rate will we see other carriers drop their support for BlackBerry as well?

    T-Mobile dropping BB10 devices from brick-and-mortar stores

The bad news for BlackBerry just keeps on coming; two days after the company entered a buyout agreement, it’s confirmed that T-Mobile will no longer sell BlackBerry devices in its brick-and-mortar stores. We’d heard as much earlier this month when rumblings hit the Crackberry forums, but additional confirmation came today, with one T-Mobile employee reporting: “My manager told me…that all BlackBerry 10 devices will now only be available via direct ship.”

It’s hardly a surprise that the carrier would be pulling the plug — lackluster sales of BB10 devices contributed to an expected net operating loss of more than $950 million in Q2. Still, one additional nail in the coffin’s gotta hurt for the (former) Canadian phone maker.

Alcatel One Touch Evolve and Fierce coming to T-Mobile this October

Alcatel One Touch Evolve and Fierce coming to TMobile this October

Not only is Alcatel One Touch on a roll in Europe and Asia, it’s starting to make more strides in the US. Sure, this isn’t the company’s first rodeo in this neck of the woods — the Shockwave came to US Cellular last fall, while the Idol has been available online as an unlocked handset for a few months — but it’s refreshing to see it get its foot in the door with one of the big four networks. This morning, Alcatel announced that it has two budget-friendly devices coming to T-Mobile next month: the Evolve (pictured above) and the Fierce (pictured below).

The Fierce is the nicest of the pair, featuring a 4.5-inch qHD display with a 1.2GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, 1,800mAh battery, 5MP rear camera and Android 4.2. The Evolve, on the other hand, has a 4-inch WVGA screen, Android 4.1, 1GHz MT6575 SoC, 4GB total storage, microSD support up to 32GB, a 5MP rear camera and 1,400mAh battery. Certainly prime material for the budget category; the Fierce will come in silver and slate and will retail for $170 off-contract (that’s $20 down with monthly payments of $6), while the Evolve will start at $100 off-contract ($28 down with $3 monthly payments). Alcatel tells us that both phones will be offered for a slightly lower cost during the holiday season, in case you’re looking for a more basic smartphone for the kiddos.

T-Mobile Sprint Merger ‘The Logical Ultimate Combination,’ Says Magenta’s CFO

T Mobile Sprint Merger The Logical Ultimate Combination, Says Magentas CFO

There is no shortage of rumors predicting a T-Mobile Sprint merger. Both of these carriers have lagged behind Verizon and AT&T in the U.S., a merger would make them strong enough to put on a brave offensive. Magenta’s chief financial officer Braxton Carter, in an interview with Reuters, has said that a T-Mobile Sprint merger is “the logical ultimate combination.” Though he hasn’t said if both of them have been involved in discussions, so even if this isn’t a totally bad idea, its not like a merger of this size and nature will just materialize out of thin air.

Carter believes that this merger will be good for the industry, as it’ll effectively become a tool to break the “duopoly” of both AT&T and Verizon, that it’ll “create a more competitive environment.” Only recently the CEO of AT&T, Randall Stephenson, said that its unlikely that any major mergers in this industry can take place as regulators seem to want four national networks in the U.S. Back in 2011, regulators blocked T-Mobile’s multi-billion dollar sale to AT&T on similar grounds. Carter acknowledges that the regulatory environment in the U.S. is “tough,” and that it is no longer a question of if consolidation will take place, now it is more the question of when further consolidation is seen in the industry.

T-Mobile Moto X Receives Update That Improves Its Camera

T Mobile Moto X Receives Update That Improves Its CameraGood news T-Mobile Moto X owners, if you thought that the camera on the Moto X could do with some improvement, you’re in luck because it seems that the Moto X for T-Mobile has recently been issued an update where the emphasis will be on improving the camera experience. The folks at Droid-Life have actually been enjoying the update for about a week now and have taken some test photos for comparison, and based on what we can see on the before and after shots, the difference is pretty obvious.

According to Motorola, the changes made include enhanced auto-white balance performance and color accuracy, improved exposure in both outdoor and backlit scenes, and reduced noise in low-light scenes. The sample photos taken by Droid-Life are pretty obvious and if you’re a T-Mobile subscriber with a Moto X, this update is one worth looking out for, so check your phones for updates if you haven’t been notified already. No word on when this update will make its way onto Moto X devices on other networks or for the unlocked version of the phone, but for now it looks like T-Mobile customers will get to enjoy it first. Let us know in the comments below if you have received your update and if you’re enjoying your new camera experience!

T-Mobile Moto X gets updated with significant camera enhancements

TMobile Moto X gets updated with significant camera enhancements

In our review of the Moto X, we determined that while its ClearPixel camera was decent, its performance was hit or miss. Fortunately, Motorola has taken a lot of feedback and has cranked out a software update with improvements to the camera’s performance, specifically in the areas of exposure, color accuracy and focus speed. The refresh, which is so far getting pushed out to T-Mobile phones — we expect it to roll out to other carriers as soon as each one is done testing the new firmware, though nothing is currently confirmed — appears to make a rather substantial difference in several scenarios, such as reducing noise in low-light and eliminating haze in outdoor shots. Anandtech’s Brian Klug had the opportunity to take the updated shooter for a test run and declared it to be “nothing short of the biggest [improvement] I’ve ever seen come across in an OTA update.”

In addition to the camera improvements, Motorola also threw in a few other enhancements as well. Users who have downloaded the update should expect increased Touchless Control accuracy, a fix for the choppy audio issue some have experienced in voice calls and an improvement to Moto Assist as well.

T-Mobile Ad Draws Flak Over Alleged False Claims

T Mobile Ad Draws Flak Over Alleged False ClaimsIt seems that the folks over at T-Mobile seem to have run into a little bit of an issue here, as they have now caught the attention of folks over from the National Advertising Division. The National Advertising Division happen to be a group which monitors advertising on behalf of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, concerning some of its more recent advertisements that have been directed at AT&T. The NAD (as they are known in short) are not too happy with a bunch of T-Mobile’s claims concerning AT&T’s network in its ads, where one of them claimed that T-Mobile’s network delivers 50% additional bandwidth compared to AT&T.

The NAD has gone ahead to describe such a claim as “flawed” as it compares T-Mobile and AT&T’s HSPA networks, all the while ignoring AT&T’s 4G LTE coverage. Not only that, the NAD is confident that they can back up their stand as there simply is not enough evidence available to depict that AT&T’s combined HSPA and LTE networks will plod along slower in a more congested compared to T-Mobile’s service. Not only that, T-Mobile has been asked to stop laying claim that they have the “most advanced technology” and “faster 4G service” in its ads.

T-Mobile reprimanded for false advertising by industry watchdog (update: T-Mobile responds)

T-Mobile reprimanded for false advertising by industry watchdog (update: T-Mobile responds)

Apparently AT&T isn’t the only one thinking that T-Mobile’s Uncarrier advertising campaign might be a touch too aggressive. The National Advertising Division, which is administered by the Council of Better Business Bureaus, has put out a statement scolding the magenta carrier for “flawed” advertising claims against its GSM rival. It takes particular issue with the assertion that T-Mobile offers 50 percent more bandwidth than AT&T because it only compares HSPA networks and doesn’t take into account the latter’s ever-increasing LTE grid. The NAD goes on to conclude that there’s “insufficient evidence that AT&T’s combined network, including LTE is more (sic) likely to be slowed by congestion than T-Mobile’s,” suggesting that T-Mobile halt all pronouncements otherwise. If it wishes to continue those claims, the NAD says it should outline the conditions where they would occur, such as the situations, locations or type of phones required to have an advantage.

Further, the NAD recommends that claims such as “most advanced technology” and “faster 4G service” should be discontinued or modified as well as the use of its 4G / 4G LTE coverage maps. It also said that T-Mobile’s call quality claim was overly broad. T-Mobile has responded to NAD, stating that it believes it’s already communicating its message well, but will take the suggestions into consideration. John Legere, T-Mobile’s outspoken CEO, has already taken to Twitter in defense of the company’s bold marketing approach. We’ve reached out to T-Mobile for a statement and will update this post when we get it.

Update: T-Mobile’s Chief Marketing Officer, Mike Seivert has seen the NAD’s recommendations for T-mo to make some minor modifications to its claims, and while they’ll be taken under advisement, his company won’t be changing its tune:

NAD’s findings are a validation of our marketing approach. In fact, today’s NAD findings won’t result in any substantial changes to our marketing claims. We will continue to spread the word about our coast to coast 4G coverage, superfast 4G network, and superior call clarity, along with our message of simple, no annual service contract plans, unlimited data and the best upgrade program, JUMP!

T-Mobile Cuts Prices Of Older iPhones To Clear Inventory

T Mobile Cuts Prices Of Older iPhones To Clear Inventory

In less than a week the new Apple iPhones will be launched in ten select markets. All four major U.S. carriers will offer the new smartphones on launch day, T-Mobile is one of those carriers. The carrier apparently cut prices of older iPhones quietly last week as it looks to clear inventory ahead of the launch. The 16GB iPhone 5 price has dropped from $149.99 upfront and 24 equal monthly payments of $21 to $99.99 upfront and monthly payments of $18.75. Given that the iPhone 5C replaces last year’s flagship in Apple’s smartphone lineup, the company has officially discontinued the iPhone 5.

The carrier is also offering an overall price cut of $100 on both the 32GB and 64GB iPhone 5 models. iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S were sold by T-Mobile in locations where its HSPA+ service was available, it is expected that T-Mobile might further slash their prices in order to move more inventory out the door. As previously mentioned, the new iPhones will be launched on T-Mobile come September 20th. The iPhone 5C won’t require an upfront payment, will customers will have to make 24 equal monthly payments of $22 for the 16GB variant. The iPhone 5S is being offered for $99 upfront and 24 equal monthly payments of $22.91 for the 16GB variant as well. [Image via TmoNews]
