Nintendo Pulling Plug on Online Play for Wii and DS on May 20

Let’s face it. Nintendo is going down the drain very quickly. Its 3DS and Wii U consoles have been unable to sell in the volume that previous systems enjoyed. The company is selling fewer games and less hardware meaning that losses are stacking. You might think that with people not buying Nintendo games and hardware that Nintendo would want to do all it could to take care of the gamers that are still loyal and playing.

That would be wrong. Nintendo has announced that as of May 20 it will be ending support for online play for the DS and Wii game consoles. The end of support for Wi-Fi Connection service will come on May 20. After that date, gamers will only be able to play games in offline mode. I know there are a bunch of Mario Kart fans out there not happy at all right now.

Nintendo does gladly say 3DS and Wii U gamers will get to continue playing online. The crux of the story here is upgrade to a new device if you want to play Nintendo games online. Boo Nintendo, boo to you!

Rolls-Royce Shows off Drone Ships That Could Revolutionize Shipping on the Oceans

Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc is touting what it thinks could be the future of shipping on the high seas. The company has been working on a design for drone ships that ditch the crew so they can carry more cargo and cut expenses. The ships would be controlled by sensors and a captain that sits in a remote VR cockpit on land that shows them what they would see standing on the deck of a ship.

The firm says that the drone ships would not only be cheaper to operate, but they would be safer and less polluting as well. The idea is to get rid of the bridge and all systems that are needed to support a living crew and replace that with more space for cargo.

By eliminating the crew on the ships, the company thinks it could cut 40% of the costs of a cargo shipment right away. The drone ship would have redundant systems like an aircraft and would be able to continually monitor itself to improve efficiency. Supporters of human-crewed vessels say that nothing can replace the eyes and thought processes of humans aboard a ship in the ocean.

The remote-controlled ships could be ready to sail the seas in the next decade.

Square Pickup Lets You Order Food to Go Without Calling in

I’m sure that you have been sitting in the office or at home, at some point and decided to order up some take out for lunch. The problem with many eateries at lunch time is that they are so busy you end up waiting forever for someone to pick up the phone, only to be greeted by a harried worker that often messes up your order. That’s where Square Pickup comes in.

Square Pickup is an app that is currently in development for iOS and Android devices. The app allows any restaurant that participates in Square payments to enable their entire menu to be ordered and paid for directly from the app. The upside for the restaurant is that no one has to take an order. The upside for the person ordering is that they can choose what they want and pay without having to wait for someone to pick up the phone. The orderer also doesn’t have to wait to checkout since they pay with the app, all they need to do is get their bag and walk out.

There are other services out there that offer similar capabilities – like GrubHub – but so many restaurants are already using Square for payments now that this could be a good alternative.

The app is currently in a limited preview mode, so you’ll have to wait before you can use it unless you’re fortunate enough to have received an invitation code.

MakerBot Replicator Mini 3D Printer Hits Pre-order for $1375

If you liked the idea of the MakerBot Replicator 2 3D printer that launched a couple years ago, but didn’t want to spend the money the thing costs, check this out. MakerBot has announced that it is now taking pre-orders for the cheapest 3D printer it has ever offered. The new printer about half the cost the Replicator 2 demanded when it launched.

The printer is called the MakerBot Replicator Mini and it will sell for $1375(USD). The 3D printer is sized for use on cluttered desks at home or in the office. It is also aimed at use in educational environments. The Mini has a bed that doesn’t need to be leveled. It can create objects up to 3.9″ L x 3.9″ W x 4.9″ h.

Default print resolution for the device is 200-microns, though its motors are capable of stepping at just 11 microns on the X/Y axes and 2.5 microns on the Z axis. The Mini is optimized to use the MakerBot PLA Filament that comes in over 17 colors. It’s also got an onboard camera so you can monitor prints remotely. The printer is also compatible with print projects on Thingiverse.

While it’s certainly not the cheapest small 3D printer, it is made by one of the most experienced 3D printer manufacturers, and its build quality, industrial design and feature set look very good. The Replicator Mini will ship sometime this spring.
