Bioprinting Uses 3D Printers to Make Living Tissue: Frankenstein 2.0

We’ve seen a lot of notable applications of 3D printing technology, but this one has to be the most cutting edge of them all. Some companies have made considerable progress in special 3D printers and ink. Instead of printing replicasfood or gadgets, they print living tissue.

The screenshot above is from a presentation made by Andras Forgacs at a conference held by The Economist. Forgacs is the co-founder of Organovo, one of the companies who are looking into 3D printing live tissue, which is now being called bioprinting. Forgacs implies that Organovo is interested in using bioprinting to help pharmaceutical companies reduce costs in developing drugs. Listen to Forgacs explain bioprinting in a nutshell in the video below, courtesy of Fora.tv:

As noted by the Wall Street Journal, researchers and “bioengineers” in various academic institutions have also been experimenting with bioprinting. Some have been able to print blood vessels, while others are making a portable printer designed to print tissue directly to a wound to make it heal faster.

All of these experts hope that someday they will get to the next level and print entire organs. Perhaps by then we can “map” the organs of other people, then copy and print those templates. Want to be smarter? Download a template of Stephen Hawking’s brain, print it then have it transplanted on your noggin. Want to be stronger? Download and print Lebron James’ physique. Want to be braver? Download and print the heart of a champ. Or not.

Belkin iPad Mini Cases: A Little Something for Everyone

While I have to admit that I’m on the fence on whether to get the iPad Mini, I’ve been told by a couple of friends that they’d appreciate a smaller iPad because it would be easier to carry around with them everywhere. That being said, if you’re planning on getting one, you’ll need a case to protect it from bumps and scratches in your bag, and Belkin just released a couple of good ones.

iPad Mini Teardown: Apple Fans Get Ready to Cringe

I’d wager most people out there who ordered the new iPad mini have yet to eveb get the tablet in their hands. I know several people who were due to have theirs delivered today, but a few folks already have theirs. The geeks over at iFixit have their hands on an early delivery iPad mini and they are naturally taking out the heat gun and tools to tear the thing apart as usual. Such a vivid gadget autopsy may make Apple fans a little sad.

The teardown isn’t quite complete, but there are plenty of pictures to show you what the iPad mini looks like on the inside. The gadget killers do report that the glass is much easier to remove on this device than previous Apple gadgets. The brains of the operations include an Apple A5 CPU, and various other custom Apple chips.

It also appears that Apple is very serious about screws when it comes to securing components inside the little tablet. Cupertino used 16 screws to hold down a plate underneath the display. Underneath that plate hide the juicy insides including the battery and other various bits of hardware.

Be sure to stop by iFixit today as they continue their disassembly and wrap up the teardown step-by-step.

GoPro HERO3 Camera Now Available

About a week and a half ago we talked about the official unveiling of the awesome new GoPro HERO3 action camera. The camera was up for pre-order when we mentioned it last time with an estimated ship date to be somewhere around the middle of November. GoPro has now announced that the camera was now officially available for purchase in its three main versions.

The HERO3: Silver Edition is available right now and has all the same features as the HD HERO2 it replaces – and more – including 11 megapixel still photo capability, up to 1080p HD resolution video, and adds integrated Wi-Fi. This camera sells for $299.99. The HERO3: White Edition offers five-megapixel picture resolution, up to full HD video recording, and has integrated Wi-Fi for $199.99. This camera is a direct replacement of the original HD Hero. As with all GoPro cameras, there is a vast array of mounts available to suit just about every recording need.

The top-of-the-line HERO3: Black Edition ships starting on November 14th for $399.99(USD) and includes the Wi-Fi Remote accessory that normally sells for $79.99. That remote accessory allows you to turn on the camera and start recording even if the camera located too far away from you to reach physically. That is a big deal if you use one of these cameras for motorsports where deeply bolstered seats and racing harnesses make movement very difficult within the vehicle. The HERO3′s resolution is pretty incredible, with full 1080p/60 and even a 4k mode (only 15fps, though.)

All these new features make my original HD HERO look pretty lame.

Oakley Airwave Goggles: Become the Robo Skier You’ve Always Wanted to Be

I have to admit that I didn’t think that heads-up display goggles would be initially be marketed to snowboarders, but I now look forward to having a HUD in my everyday eyewear, or on my motorcycle helmet.

The snow-sport focused Oakley Airwave Goggles have a little prism at the bottom right of your peripheral vision that displays useful information. You can see GPS/navigation routes, buddy tracking to find your friends with goggles, or friends who don’t have them but are running the app, as well as music controls, speed and jump analytics, and more.

You can even pair them to your smartphone and view incoming calls and texts. All of these features are controlled via a wrist remote, and the companion app will work on Android or iOS.

The HUD is perceived as a 14-inch screen that is five feet away, so refocusing of the eye isn’t necessary. The goggles have built-in GPS and accelerometers, so your data can be stored in them when your phone runs out of juice. The goggles are being launched today, and will sell for $599 (USD) at the Oakley Store.

Urbanears Plattan Tweed Headphones: The Retro Executive Headphones

You have to give it to Urbanears, their headphones are really distinctive, so much that I almost bought a pair without finding out how they sounded. This Plattan Tweed Edition is part of the Urbanears Editions range, and once again, these look pretty spiffy.

The Urbanears Plattan Tweed Edition headphones are enveloped in hand-woven Harris Tweed, which is made out of 100% virgin wool. They have brown ear caps, and a brown textile cord with a Kevlar core, so it won’t end up all twisted. These headphones are pretty interesting, and will nicely match any Harris Tweed clothes you might have.

There is a plug to share music with a friend, who will need to use his or her own headphones. These headphones sell for $80 (USD), but unfortunately, they are currently sold out. For now, be sure to check out the additional styles of Plattan headphones over on the Urbanears website.

Evil Controllers Rechargeable Xbox 360 Controller Kills AA Batteries (for Good)

Still not living up to its name, Evil Controllers is back with another invention that should be very beneficial to Xbox 360 gamers. The company has come up with an Xbox 360 controller with a built-in rechargeable battery, just like the PS3′s controllers.

evil controllers rechargeable xbox 360 controller

I’m actually surprised that Microsoft hasn’t released a controller like this, although to its credit it has released external rechargeable battery packs that can last for an entire day of gaming. But as Evil Controllers mentions in its Kickstarter video below, a controller with an internal battery is more environment-friendly and much lighter. Plus, Evil’s version is a long-lasting Lithium-ion battery, so you can play for up to 10 hours straight without recharging. You can skip to about 1:10 in the video for the meat of the pitch:

Here’s a quick look at the controller:

If you watched the Kickstarter video then you know that Evil Controllers is very considerate with their reward tiers. Pledge at least $80 (USD) and you get an Xbox 360 controller with their custom backplate built-in, or just pledge $50 to get a DIY kit so you can install the backplate on your own controller. You know where to go.
