Sony unveils the world’s first curved LED TV: pre-orders open now for $4,000

Sony unveils the world's first curved LED TV, takes preorders today for $4,000

Sony didn’t mention this during its IFA press event, but it just unveiled a big treat for home theater fans: meet the S990A, the world’s first curved-screen LED TV. The introductory 65-inch, 1080p model uses the same color-rich Triluminos display technology that we’ve seen in Sony’s recent TVs, just in a more immersive (or at least, more impressive-looking) form factor. Its built-in sound quality reportedly gets a boost, too. Since the eight built-in speakers are angled at different directions, Sony can simulate surround sound more convincingly than it could with a flat-panel set. As you’d expect, the TV also includes mobile-friendly features like Smart Connect media sharing, One-touch NFC remote pairing and second screen interaction through SideView. The S990A won’t ship to the US until late October, but Sony is taking pre-orders today — and at a $4,000 asking price, the curved LED set is much more affordable than its OLED counterparts.

Sky becomes first UK TV network to broadcast live 4K video

Sky becomes first UK TV network to broadcast live 4K

Remember how we’d heard that a British broadcaster is trialing 4K TV? We have a hunch as to which company that is: Sky now claims that it’s the first UK TV network to have conducted a live 4K broadcast. The firm captured a weekend Premier League match in ultra high resolution using the same infrastructure it normally requires for a live show, with satellites delivering a feed to the company’s Isleworth broadcast center. Commercial service remains distant, mind you — Sky requires both more research and wider adoption of 4K TVs to justify an upgrade. If everything falls into place, though, Sky could have an advantage over rival providers that have yet to venture beyond HD.

Xbox Live viewers will get the channels soon, the broadcaster says. Twitter acquires Trendrr to bolster real-time coverage of TV trends

Twitter acquires TV analysis firm Trendrr

If it wasn’t already clear that Twitter is serious about monitoring TV trends, the company just proved it by acquiring Trendrr. The deal gives Twitter new tools for both tracking social network activity during TV broadcasts and delivering that information to advertisers and media producers. While the two companies aren’t specific regarding their plans, Trendrr is scaling back its operations: its Curatorr service will keep going, but it will stop taking customers for its Trendrr.TV engagement tracker. It will be some time before we see the results of the acquisition, but the increasingly tighter links between Twitter activity and TV suggest that the buyout could prove worthwhile in the long run.

Online Car Insurance’s Mascots Flo & The Gecko Are Social Media SuperStars

Car Insurance's Mascots Flo & The Gecko Are Social Media SuperStarsThere’s a lively debate as to whether an intangible service as mundane
as online car insurance could possibly benefit from the value of social media.
However, when these marketers realized that the marketing and selling of
auto insurance is no different than the marketing and selling of
another intangible product such as hotel accommodations, they quickly
seized the opportunity with vigor – and with mascots to boot!
