Tesco To Start Introducing Face-Scanning Customized Ads At Its Gas Stations

If you have seen the movie Minority ReportTesco To Start Introducing Face Scanning Customized Ads At Its Gas Stations starring Tom Cruise, you might remember several scenes in the movie where a camera scans the eye of the person and will display advertisements that are relevant to said person. Well it looks like something similar will be happening over in the UK at Tesco, and if you’re planning on shopping at Tesco anytime in the near future, this is an interesting feature you might want to check out. Basically these ads are similar to those found in the movie, where a screen with a built-in camera will be placed at Tesco’s gas stations where it will have the ability to identify users bby their gender, approximate age, and will be able to customize its ads accordingly.

The ads will come from a UK digital media company, Amscreen, who will utilize face-tracking technology made by French company, Quividi that will help identify the traits mentioned above. On top of being able to detect the age and gender of a person, it will also act as a data collection device where it will be able to record how long a person is looking at the ad, allowing companies to modify their ads to make them more effective, although presumably at the start people will be looking at the ads longer due to the novelty of having ads customized to them. It sounds pretty cool and Amscreen is hoping to introduce these screens to Tesco’s supermarket outlets in the future as well. What do you guys think?

Tesco sells 35,000 Hudl tablets in first few days following launch

Tesco sells 35,000 Hudl tablets in first few days following launch

Wondering how your old buddy Tesco is faring with the launch of its first branded bit of hardware, the £119 Hudl tablet? Well, according to Tesco’s CEO Phil Clarke, via a tweet from Retail Week’s Jennifer Creevy, not too shabby: the supermarket chain has offloaded about 35,000 of the devices over the past few days. We very much doubt the likes of Google and Amazon, which have never been forthcoming with early sales figures, will be threatened by the number, but it’s surely not a bad start from a retailer that knows more about selling bread and milk than tablets. Incidentally, Amazon’s just dropped the price of its soon to be last-gen 7-inch Fire HD to £119, matching that of the Hudl — if you’ve got no ClubCard points to secure a discount, that is. We now have one of Tesco’s tabs in our possession, so look out for the review. We’re assessing the display by rewatching the entirety of Game of Thrones, however, so it might take a while.

Tesco Hudl tablet features 7-inch screen and quad-core 1.5 GHz processor

Popular UK retailer Tesco has launched a new tablet running the Android operating system designed specifically to combat Amazon’s Kindle. The Tesco tablet is called the Hudl and features a seven-inch screen with a resolution of 1440 x 900. The tablet runs Android 4.2.2 and the first rumblings that the tablet was coming surfaced in […]

7-inch Tesco Hudl Tablet Announced For £119

7 inch Tesco Hudl Tablet Announced For £119Thanks to Android being an open-sourced operating system, it basically means that just about anyone with the resources would be able to create a smartphone or tablet with their own branding, and UK retailer Tesco has announced a new Android tablet in the form of the Hudl, which we guess is pronounced as “huddle”. The tablet is a 7” device and sports a 1.5GHz quad-core chipset under the hood. It will also feature a display resolution of 1440×900, which while isn’t Full HD, should look pretty sharp crammed into a 7” display.

The tablet will also come with WiFi connectivity, 16GB of onboard storage which can be expanded up to 48GB thanks to a microSD card slot. The Hudl will also come with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean preinstalled and will have access to the Google Play store, Tesco’s BlinkBox and Clubcard TV platforms and based on what we can see, appears to be running on a somewhat stock version of Android, which is good news for those who aren’t a fan of companies imposing their own UIs on their devices. Available in a black, blue, purple, and red, the Tesco Hudl tablet will set customers back £119 and will be available via Tesco’s website or physical retail outlets. No word on whether it will be making its way stateside, although we doubt that it would.

Tesco puts its name to a budget 7-inch tablet in the UK: the £119 Hudl (hands-on)

DNP UK supermarket Tesco puts its name to a budget tablet the xx Hudl

Not content with flogging other companies’ tablets, today UK supermarket chain Tesco is launching one of its own. Priced at £119 and available from September 30th, the Hudl features a 7-inch (1,440 x 900 resolution) display for watching those Blinkbox titles in 720p, a quad-core Rokchip 1.5GHz processor, stock Android 4.2.2, a microSD slot for supplementing the 16GB of internal storage and, according to Tesco, a battery that’ll last around 9 hours on a full charge. Some of the specs, such as dual WiFi antennae and stereo speakers on the rear face seem carefully designed to square up against Amazon’s elderly (and soon-to-be-replaced) Kindle Fire HD, which, at £160, may suddenly look expensive beside the Hudl. Amazon, however, can claim the stronger ecosystem, while Google’s £199 Nexus 7 boasts better all-round hardware.

The device is slightly chubby and plasticky, as you’d expect, but it’s not some rebadge. Tesco says it worked directly with a manufacturer (Archos, as it turns out) to produce a tablet of its own design. Also, to the retailer’s credit, the tablet feels sturdy, which seems to be a theme of certain optional Hudl-branded accessories, too. These include a pair of headphones and a rubbery case intended to make the slate more child-friendly. Tesco says it’ll double the value of ClubCard vouchers put towards a Hudl purcahse, meaning customers can pick one up for free if they have enough points for a £60 voucher. There’s also an offer coming for Blinkbox vouchers, designed to tempt you into Tesco’s content ecosystem that complements its first foray into hardware — we hear the promotion starts next week and vouchers will be half-price, so you’ll be able to get £20 of streaming content for a tenner.

    Tesco supermarket prepping tablet launch

British supermarket giant, Tesco, is looking to enter the competitive tablet market with their own brand of device. Tesco Tablet Rumored To Be In The Pipeline

Tesco Tablet Rumored To Be In The PipelineTesco has certainly come a long way from being a supermarket that carries just about all kinds of stuff that you need for your home and office, to churning out their very own brand name items. In fact, some of their foodstuff are pretty good, too, and here we are with word that Tesco will be working on a tablet of their own. Of course, this is but a rumor, and needless to say, this particular rumor does not hold much weight at all, considering how details about it have been non-existent to date – either that or Tesco has been pretty good at ensuring details about it did not leak out beforehand.

There is also speculation going around that this particular tablet from Tesco will arrive pre-loaded with video, music and e-books, in addition to apps for Tesco’s online shopping, banking and Blinkbox services. Does it make sense for a company like Tesco to roll out a tablet? Absolutely, as it would be in line with what Amazon and Google have already done in the past, that is, to sell extremely affordable hardware that gets the job done, all the while carrying the other covert nature of its existence, that is, to showcase Tesco’s digital content offerings. Who are we to deny the possibility of a 3G variant that will be powered by Tesco Mobile?

Tesco rumored to launch its own tablet, hopes you’ll add one to the shopping list

Tesco's reportedly getting into the hardware business with branded tablet

Tesco’s grown from supermarket heavyweight to digital content contender thanks to its paid Blinkbox TV / movie and music streaming services, Clubcard TV ad-supported video platform and in-development e-book store. According to The Times, Tesco’s about to get into the hardware business, too, with the launch of homegrown tablet sometime before Christmas. Details of the rumored device are non-existent, but it’s said to come loaded with video, music and e-books, as well as apps for Tesco’s online shopping, banking and Blinkbox services. It’s a completely plausible next step for the company, and would mimic Amazon and Google’s model of selling low-cost hardware, in part, to showcase their digital content offerings. Presumably, there’s also scope for a 3G variant running on Tesco Mobile. We’d guess that if the retailer does release a tablet, it’ll run Android and be extremely budget-friendly — it’ll have to be to go up against the new Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Fire slates (let alone the rumored next-gen). As always, we’ve hit up Tesco for confirmation and comment, and will update you if we hear anything back.

Blinkbox goes HD for Game of Thrones season three, available July 15th

Blinkbox goes HD for Game of Thrones season three, available July 15th

Tesco’s VOD service Blinkbox beat all other UK players to the punch when it hosted the second season of Game of Thrones well before the box-set launch, and it’s doing the same with season three. It’s only just ended, but from July 15th, the latest series will be available to download or stream in its entirety, and what’s more, its arrival marks the first time HD content has been accessible on Blinkbox. You’ll also be able to watch season three in SD, should you want to, and both previous seasons will get HD options when the third lands. Pricing isn’t yet confirmed, but we’d expect the cost to be similar to that of season two, which was £1.79 (around $2.80) per episode, or £17.99 (around $28) for all ten. If you haven’t seen Game of Thrones yet, and we highly recommend you do, you’ve got just over a month to prepare for the Blinkbox launch and subsequent marathon.
