Tizen And Firefox OS Should Team Up, According To Samsung

Tizen And Firefox OS Should Team Up, According To SamsungIt is safe to say that in the smartphone platform market at the moment, the main players are probably Android, iOS, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry. There are of course other platforms out there such as Sailfish OS, Tizen, and Firefox OS. While not to say that these smaller operating systems have no chance at beating out the big guys, doing it on their own could be a long and tough journey, which is why Samsung’s Chief Secretary, Wonsuk Lee, recently expressed interest in teaming up with the folks at Mozilla to bring Firefox OS and Tizen closer together. This is not necessarily a merger, but rather a combination of forces, especially since both platforms support the development of HTML5.

While Samsung continues to rely on Google’s Android operating system for its revenue, Tizen and Firefox OS have been designed to support low-end devices which could help them break into emerging markets. At the moment Microsoft’s Windows Phone and BlackBerry devices are doing relatively well in emerging markets such as India, so perhaps by combining forces, they will be able to gain some traction there. Samsung has also expressed their belief that one day both Tizen and Firefox OS could grow to the point where they might be able to give iOS and Android a run for their money, a little ironic given that Samsung is very reliant on Android at the moment. In any case what do you guys think of the idea of Mozilla and Samsung teaming up?

Prototype Tizen Smartphone Reportedly Being Tested By Korean Carriers

Prototype Tizen Smartphone Reportedly Being Tested By Korean Carriers

Samsung is yet to announce its Tizen smartphone, which was originally supposed to be released this year. As it stands, the device has been delayed to early 2014. It is rumored that Samsung delayed its launch so as to refine the Tizen OS more. The company’s first Tizen device is going to be a camera, and it might even launch a Tizen powered smart fridge before it launches the smartphone. That said, the latest reports coming in from Korea suggest that the country’s carriers have already started testing a prototype Tizen smartphone that Samsung has provided.

While this doesn’t reveal in any way when the company’s first commercially available Tizen smartphone is going to be released, it does indicate that things are going along nicely. Korean carriers might be the first ones to receive the device when it is released, so it makes sense that Samsung’s allowing them to test out a prototype on their network. Unfortunately, not much is known about the prototype itself, there’s no word on its specifications or design. It was also rumored recently that NTT DoCoMo, one of the largest carriers in Japan, is pushing Samsung to release its Tizen smartphone in early 2014. As of now, the Korean manufacturer has not confirmed when we can expect to see the device next year.

Samsung Reportedly Launching Tizen Powered Smart Fridge At CES 2014

Samsung Reportedly Launching Tizen Powered Smart Fridge At CES 2014

Samsung has made it clear that its Tizen operating system won’t only be limited to tablets and smartphones. The company aims to create an entire ecosystem which will include all sorts of devices, from smart TVs to infotainment systems in vehicles. Apparently Tizen might find its way into your kitchen as well, if reports coming in from Korea are true. Samsung will reportedly launch a “smart fridge” at CES 2014, one that will be powered by Tizen. This would be the company’s second Tizen device, the first being its smart camera.

Apparently the smart fridge will have a built-in PAD with a large display, it will run on Nexell’s Application Processor and is likely to have 512MB or 256MB of RAM. Nominal built-in flash storage is expected, and so is Wi-Fi b/g/n support. Samsung hasn’t commented on the rumor as yet, and hasn’t confirmed if it plans to bring Tizen over to home appliances as well. There’s no word as yet when the first Tizen powered smartphone will be released, there’s quite a lot of hype surrounding it. Samsung was initially rumored to launch it this year, but it has apparently delayed it to 2014. It is unclear if Samsung plans on making a Tizen phone related announcement as well at CES 2014.

NTT DoCoMo Reportedly Pushing Samsung To Release Tizen Smartphone Early Next Year

NTT DoCoMo Reportedly Pushing Samsung To Release Tizen Smartphone Early Next Year

Samsung and Intel have been working on Tizen for quite some time, the OS will run on a widely variety of devices, the first being a camera. Earlier this year it was rumored that Samsung will release its first Tizen powered smartphone in a few months, it was then rumored that the release has been delayed until late 2013. The year is now nearing its end and there’s still no Tizen smartphone. Recent reports suggest that Samsung has delayed the smartphone until next year, and its not known when it will come out in 2014. Local media reports coming in from Korea claim that NTT DoCoMo, a major Japanese carrier, is pushing Samsung to finally release the first Tizen smartphone as early as January, 2014.

The carrier is a major backer of the Tizen foundation, so it would make sense if its getting frustrated by the repeated delays. Though it remains to be seen though if the pressure it is mounting on Samsung will have any effect on the release of the first Tizen smartphone. Samsung has already said that the first Tizen device will be a camera and that the smartphone will follow later. It has also detailed plans for a smart TV, which will come after the smartphone has finally been released.

Tizen Lite Will Target Lower-End Devices With 256MB Of RAM

Tizen Lite Will Target Lower End Devices With 256MB Of RAMWhen it comes to targeting emerging markets, Microsoft’s Windows Phone appears to be doing pretty well for itself, with low-end budget devices like the Nokia Lumia 520 selling like hotcakes over in India. Well it turns out that Samsung wants a bigger piece of that pie and has introduced a version of Tizen known as Tizen Lite. This particular version of Tizen is meant to target lower-end devices that might not feature such great hardware specs, and according to Samsung’s specifications, will play nicely with devices with RAM as low as 256MB.

Other supported hardware specs of Tizen Lite include a display resolution 320×480, which is almost pitiable by today’s Full HD standards, and 1GB of onboard storage, with 512MB of that storage going to the operating system alone. Of course depending on the manufacturer (who might not necessarily be exclusively Samsung), those specs can be improved, but given that Tizen Lite will require such minimal specs, budget devices do appear to be its target market. In any case it is likely that these budget devices will make its way to emerging markets, as opposed to more developed markets where the market is already considered to be saturated, but it’s worth keeping an eye out for nonetheless.

Samsung NX300M camera is first Tizen-based product to launch

Samsung’s Tizen has been the source of rumors for more than a while, with some expecting to see a handset hit shelves with the OS. As it turns out, the Korean company doesn’t seem too keen on butting heads with Android and iOS, and instead has elected to launch the Samsung NX300M, a digital camera […]

Samsung NX300M Is The Company’s First Tizen Product

Samsung NX300M Is The Companys First Tizen ProductWe have heard how Samsung plans to launch Tizen-based products in the near future, but as it turns out, they have already done so. If you might recall, earlier in October Samsung announced the NX300M camera which was essentially a minor upgrade over the NX300 and was destined for launch only in South Korea. Little did we know, the NX300M is actually Samsung’s first product that is running on the Tizen platform which apparently aided in the camera booting up reportedly twice as fast, and also improved its camera performance, which we can’t attest to since we have yet to try it ourselves.

For those who have tried the NX300M or have read reviews and you like what you see and hear, hopefully this camera technology (software side, of course) will make its way onto Samsung’s Tizen-based smartphones, which according to Samsung during their Tizen Developer Summit In South Korea, will make their debut in Q1 2014, although no specific dates were mentioned. The Tizen smartphones are expected to run in Tizen 2.2.1 but will see an update to Tizen 3.0 when the update is available come Q3 2014 which will see multi-user accounts, 64-bit architecture support, better 3D rendering and more.

Tizen Smart TV On The Cards, Won’t Come Before The Phone

Tizen Smart TV On The Cards, Wont Come Before The Phone

It was back in 2011 that Samsung and Intel came together to work on Tizen, a new open source operating system. So far no device running said operating system has been released in the market, a smartphone was expected to be released earlier this year, but it hasn’t come out as yet. A few months back it was rumored that Tizen is almost dead, but Samsung brushed aside those rumors and said that work on the OS will continue. Samsung also plans on launching a Tizen smart TV. Head of Samsung Electronics’ visual display unit, Kim Hyun-seok, revealed at the Smart TV Global Summit 2013 in Seoul today that the company has seen “much progress” in the Tizen TV, but confirmed that the phone will be launched first.

Samsung has not confirmed anything about its Tizen smartphone plans as yet. a few weeks back it was rumored that the company’s CEO had deliberately pushed back the launch so that they could enhance the experience of the new OS. Just last week it was rumored possibility of a Tizen smartphone releasing in 2013 looks bleak, the consensus in the rumor mill now is that the smartphone might come out early next year. Despite the delays, Tizen seems far from being dead. Intel’s vice president of software and services, Imad Sousou, also reiterated the chip maker’s commitment to Tizen by called it a “significant investment.”

Samsung’s Tizen Smartphone Delayed To 2014 [Rumor]

Samsungs Tizen Smartphone Delayed To 2014 [Rumor]Is Tizen dead? Perhaps not, although the platform and its accompanying hardware have yet to see the light of day, at least as far as Samsung is concerned. We had originally heard that Samsung’s first Tizen smartphones were due for a launch in Q3 2013 but that has obviously not happened, and last we heard, Samsung’s CEO had apparently delayed the release on purpose so as to create an operating system whose experience would be an amazing one. In any case according to recent rumors, chances of seeing a Samsung Tizen device in 2013 would be unlikely as it would seem that Samsung has since delayed the operating system (again) and will see a launch in 2014 instead.

While it is understandable and greatly appreciated by many that Samsung would be willing to delay the platform to create the best experience possible, just like how game developers delay games to iron out all the kinks, the practice might not be so applicable for smartphones. Platforms such as Windows Phone are slowly gaining market share and with new platforms such as Sailfish and Mozilla’s Firefox OS entering the market, a delay would just mean that Samsung would be late to party with customers having already committed themselves to another platform. What do you guys think? Is Samsung making a mistake by delaying Tizen yet again?

First Tizen Tablet In Japan Launched For Developers

First Tizen Tablet In Japan Launched For DevelopersAh, the Tizen OS. Much has been said about it, that sometime in the middle of this summer, it was reported that the mobile operating system was “almost dead”. Well, there were still some life signs left as Tizen 3.0 was spotted to run on a Samsung Galaxy S3 a couple of months after that. All in all, a simple conclusion can be made – that devices which run on Tizen are pretty difficult to come across, it is sort of going round and round trying to snag that legendary Pokemon.

Well, developers who happen to have a heart for the platform over in Japan will have an additional option, thanks to the Tizen build kit that hails from the good people over at Systena. This happens to be a package which will include developer tools, manuals and technical and consulting services, all of them from Systena. Of course, those are essentials, but the main attraction of the kit would be the 10.1-inch developer tablet.

This particular tablet would run on a quad-core 1.4GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, where it is accompanied by 2GB RAM and 32GB of internal memory. Coupled with that would be a 1,920 x 1,200 display, delivering a Tizen 2.1 experience that was specially built for app development and product demonstration. No public pricing details are available just yet, but those who are interested developers can place a request additional information via the company’s website.
