Tizen NFC Features Shown Off On Video

NFC or near field communication technology has been widely implemented in various premium smartphones on different platforms such as BlackBerry, Windows Phone and Android. Apple has kept itself and iOS out of the fray for quite some time now, none of the company’s mobile devices feature this technology. It seems that Samsung’s homegrown Tizen OS will come with support for NFC from the get go. The NFC features of Tizen have been shown off on video, which hints at the possibility that the first Tizen device will come with NFC.

The video shows off a NFC tag writing app. NFC tags are basically small stickers that can be configured to invoke a number of actions on a mobile device when it is tapped against that sticker, such as calling a number, launching the browser to access a specific URL or even switching Wi-Fi on and off. The possibilities are endless. Looking at this video, one can speculate that perhaps this app will come pre-installed on Samsung’s first Tizen device. This may definitely be a unique plus point for Samsung’s nascent platform. The company has already labelled Tizen as a simple alternative to Android. It is speculated that in a bid to end its reliance upon Android, Samsung is working hard to develop its own platform. Though the company probably won’t switch all of its devices from Android to Tizen abruptly. First Tizen device is expected to come out this October.

Samsung SGH-N055 “Confirmed” As DoCoMo Tizen Handset

Samsung SGH N055 “Confirmed” As DoCoMo Tizen HandsetEarlier today, we did mention a possible rumor of how Samsung could very well introduce the first Tizen device later this coming October, and here we are with additional word on such a possibility. In fact, I guess one would say that this is closer to a “confirmation” than anything else, as a bug report page on the Tizen project website did mention that Japanese mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo already has a Tizen smartphone in the pipeline which carries the model number SGH-N055. Having said that, don’t you think that it is rather strange for Samsung to rely on “SGH” as a model number for a Tizen device? The device in question was mentioned by a user on a bug report’s comments section, touting that the “SGH-N055, docomo version, does not have this bug,” which further points out that this particular device is already being tested by third parties.

Well, chances are pretty high that we will most probably be able to check out the SGH-N055 get announced at Samsung’s developer conference, with a possible launch date sometime happening in November or December, although one would not rule out the rumored October release date, either. So far, specifications and hardware bits and pieces of the Tizen device remains unknown.

Samsung To Roll Out First Tizen Device In October [Rumor]

Samsung To Roll Out First Tizen Device In October [Rumor]Just yesterday we heard that Samsung had allegedly slowed down the development of their Tizen-based devices in a bid to focus their efforts on maintaining their position in the Android market and fend off their competition. Assuming yesterday’s rumor was true, perhaps Samsung will not be slowing Tizen down too much, because according to industry sources based in Korea, we are hearing reports that Samsung could be looking to launch their first Tizen smartphone in October in countries such as Japan, France, the United States, China, and Russia.

Apparently the decision to launch in the countries mentioned above is because Tizen already supports the languages of these countries, so there will be apps available in the native languages of those regions, thus saving customers time and possibly a headache of looking for apps in their language. Samsung has also reportedly done their research on those markets and have found that some regions like Russia, France, and China were quite big on Bada OS, and we guess Samsung is hoping that they will be just as welcoming with Tizen. Samsung is also expected to hold a developer conference on the 27th of October, so an announcement made then would not be out of the question.

Samsung Reportedly Slowing Down Tizen Development To Fight Off Android Competitors

Samsung Reportedly Slowing Down Tizen Development To Fight Off Android CompetitorsWe had previously heard that Samsung was looking to start rolling out Tizen devices in a bid to diversify their offerings and to not be so reliant on Google’s Android operating system, despite the South Korean company doing quite well for themselves with their Galaxy phones and tablets. However according to a recent report from DigiTimes, it seems that Samsung is not resting on their laurels as being one of the top Android manufacturers, and that they have reportedly slowed down development of Tizen to refocus on Android in a bid to prevent other competitors from swooping in and stealing their market share.

Naturally if Samsung were to start focusing on Tizen, it would mean that their focus would not be placed 100% on Android, and competitors from HTC, Sony, LG, and even Motorola could step in and pick up the slack which Samsung might find hard to regain. There’s no telling how accurate DigiTimes’ report is, but last we heard Samsung had refuted rumors that the Tizen operating system was “almost dead”, but we guess we will need to wait and see for ourselves just how extensive Samsung’s Tizen efforts truly are.

Samsung touts Tizen for “internet of things” convergence glue

Samsung may not have made much of Tizen so far, but sees the little-known OS as being the key to its multi-platform convergence strategy, not Google’s Android. The platform, building on MeeGo in partnership with Intel and other OEMs, may not have produced its first commercial Samsung phone, Samsung Electronics CEO J.K. Shin conceded to […]

Samsung Believes Tizen Is A “Simple Alternative” To Android

Samsung Believes Tizen Is A Simple Alternative To Android

Samsung develops some of the most successful Android devices, look no further than its Galaxy S4, which has become the fastest selling Android smartphone of all time. This success has greatly helped Samsung in its battle against Apple for the global market share, it has also helped Android boost its global user base. Though over the past few months we’ve heard rumors that Samsung is looking to end its reliance on Android, essentially ending its dependence upon Google. Samsung announced its homegrown Tizen OS earlier this year, the company’s co-CEO termed it as a “simple alternative” to Android in an interview earlier this week.

Samsung co-CEO J.K. Shin says that Tizen will allow them to offer “cross-convergence” between various devices such as PCs, smartphones, cameras and even banks or cars to users. There exists a possibility that somewhere down the road, the company’s flagship devices might be powered by Tizen. We heard a rumor recently that perhaps Samsung was abandoning Tizen, the company released a statement saying that Tizen wasn’t being shelved, instead it launched a challenge for developers to create apps for this platform and earn a generous amount of money in the process. Though it might take quite a while for Tizen to power every Samsung device, the company certainly won’t abandon Android abruptly.

Samsung Developers Conference aims to join big guns as cross-platform yearly event

In what’s fairly clear to be the spirit of such developer events as Apple’s WWDC and Google I/O, Samsung has this week announced the creation of their own Developers Conference. Starting October 27th and lasting two days, ending on the 29th, this event takes place right in the heart of San Francisco, aiming to bring in both developers and industry leaders to a software-centric series of events living in the Samsung universe.

At the moment, Samsung has only suggested that registration and full details for the event will be going live later this summer. Here in the early summer of 2013, Samsung’s full plans for their own attempt at joining the likes of Microsoft’s BUILD – aka their own yearly developer-centered conference – stay simple.

“Engage with industry leaders. Collaborate with fellow developers. Learn about new Samsung tools and SDKs. Create what’s next.” – Samsung Dev Con

Over at SamsungDevCon’s initial web presence, the company brings a similarly scant set of details. It is known at this early stage that this event will include more than just mobile products. It’s not just going to be about Samsung smartphones and tablets. This will be, according to Samsung, a “major, Samsung-side, cross-product (multi-screen) developer event.”

Sound like a good time to you? Have a peek at our Google I/O tag portal for one direction this multi-day event series might take, and our WWDC tag portal for another.
