Toshiba Chromebook 13-Inch Hands-On Preview

Toshiba Chromebook 13 Inch Hands On Preview[CES 2014] Toshiba joins the club of OEMs which are featuring Chromebooks in their computer line-up. So far, and to the surprise of some, Google’s Chrome OS has had more traction than expected, especially in the education field. That’s because Chrome OS computers are simple, easily manageable and difficult for students to hack – thus making them a platform of choice for many schools, hotels and other places where users are given a short-term computer. Toshiba is coming to this market with a cautious approach and has taken a good look at the competitive landscape before launching its own product.

    Toshiba L7400 55-inch TV Is Feature-Packed

Toshiba L7400 55 inch TV Is Feature Packed[CES 2014] At CES 2014, Toshiba is positioning itself to “win in the long-term” as the company puts it, and while it is not an easy thing to do, Toshiba’s new TV line up does have some very interesting features. The L7400 is a 55-inch model which is one of the best-selling sizes on the American market. In terms of image quality, this television has a full array of LED lights which should translate into fine-grain intensity control and ultimately better contrast and luminosity control. We will have to take a closer look, but keep in mind that trade shows are not exactly the best place to judge image quality, and the video demos are often super-contrasted with over-saturated colors. The specs however look pretty good. (more…)

Toshiba announces USB adapter for TransferJet technology

transferjet-adapterThe folks over at Toshiba must be on to a good thing here – they have just announced an adapter which will be able to play nice with the TransferJet close proximity wireless transfer technology, and not only that, this particular adapter will also feature an USB 2.0 interface that makes it compatible with a whole lot more devices. This particular adapter is already on sale in Japan at various electronics retail stores, and will arrive in a couple of models – one with a Micro-B-type connector that is more often than not found in modern day smartphones, while the other happens to be a Type A connector that is commonly used when it comes to the world of personal computers. Either way, folks using both devices are more than used to seeing either one of them in action.

Toshiba has big plans for this particular adapter, where they hope to use it when it comes to exchanging image and video files between a smartphone and a personal computer, not to mention the ability to do so between a couple of smartphones to boot. Toshiba is also mulling over the very real possibility of using it when it comes to kiosk terminals, so that interested parties will be able to purchase video files at such kiosk terminals, as well as transferring such image files to printers sometime down the road.

So far, no manufacturer’s suggested retail price has been put forward, although there has been speculation going around that the expected retail prices of the Micro-B and Type A models happen to be ¥4,000 to ¥5,000 (approximately $38 to $48, respectively, and you will also be able to pick them up as a set from ¥8,000 to ¥9,000. We are all for a greater level of connectivity between devices, and just so you have an idea on how speedy file transfer speeds are with TransferJet, we are looking at a maximum transfer rate is 560Mbps (effective transfer rate: 375Mbps) over a range of 3cm, now how about that?

Toshiba Announces Dual 5MP Camera Module Capable Of Stereo 3D-like Images

Toshiba Announces Dual 5MP Camera Module Capable Of Stereo 3D like ImagesIt was a couple of years ago when companies such as HTC and LG attempted to released 3D smartphones. Presumably this was to capitalize on the popularity of the Nintendo 3DS which allowed gamers to enjoy games in 3D without the need for special glasses, as well as how more movies were seeing releases in 3D as well. Safe to say that while both phones were somewhat novel in nature, they did not exactly catch on and become big hits, but it seems that Toshiba thinks that there is still a place for 3D and have recently announced a dual 5MP camera module that allows smartphone owners to produce something similar to a stereo-3D shot.

However if stereo-3D shots aren’t your thing, fret not because the module appears to do more than just that. Due to the fact that dual cameras are used, it will allow photographers to manipulate the photo digitally, such as tweaking its focus (similar to the Lytro camera) as well as erasing entire objects. The resulting image will be generated as a 13MP image, and because of this, Toshiba claims that the dual camera module will allow for thinner smartphones as well. No word on when this module will enter mass production and make its way to manufacturers, but we’ll definitely keep our eyes peeled for more info.
