OCZ Formalizes Toshiba’s $35 Million Buyout Offer

OCZ Formalizes Toshibas $35 Million Buyout Offer It was just a few days ago when we brought you word that OCZ Technology Group has filed for bankruptcy, and if all were to be in good order, Toshiba could very well be the one to pick up OCZ’s assets afterwards. Well, while seeing a company fall victim to bankruptcy is always not a pretty sight, even more so when you have had some fond memories of the products/services that the company has rolled out or provided in the past, it is nice to hear that Toshiba has ambled along to acquire just about all of OCZ’s assets in a Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding – with an exchange of $35 million.

Of course, this move has been agreed upon by both parties in principle, but it happens to be subject to customary regulatory approval still. Both Toshiba’s and OCZ’s board of directors have already approved of this buyout offer. Ralph Schmitt, CEO of OCZ, mentioned, “Over the past year, OCZ has dealt with numerous issues which have stressed the company’s capital structure and operating model, posing a challenge to achieving near-term profitability. The combination of NAND flash supply constraints and credit issues have impacted our ability to satisfy the demands of our customers; this combined with increased pricing pressure in our industry have contributed to our on-going operating losses. On an operational basis, we completed a complex investigation, several restructurings and a multi-year restatement that added significantly to our working capital requirements. We have been working diligently on this partnership with Toshiba and we believe that this is the best outcome under our current corporate conditions.”

OCZ Files For Bankruptcy, Toshiba Offers To Purchase Assets

OCZ Files For Bankruptcy, Toshiba Offers To Purchase AssetsOCZ is a pretty popular name for those who love high end parts in their DIY desktops, but today is a rather sad day for the company that has introduced some impressive peripherals in the past. In fact, OCZ has not been on steady waters for quite some time now, having quit the DRAM business in order to focus on SSDs alone in 2011, but sad to say, OCZ has just filed for bankruptcy. Is there hope for the company to carry on, except that it will be under a whole new owner? The answer would be yes, as they have recently picked up an offer from Toshiba Corporation in order to acquire just about all of OCZ’s assets in a bankruptcy proceeding.

Of course, this particular offer from Toshiba would be in good standing only if OCZ manages to maintain its value as a company in the meantime. This is a particularly sad ending for a company which was once associated with blazing fast RAM modules as well as SSDs, but something tells us that their technology will still have descendants down the road through other routes. Hopefully there will be a budding “OCZ” somewhere down the horizon to continue carrying the flame, no? [Press Release]

OCZ declares bankruptcy, may sell its assets to Toshiba

    OCZ Vector SSD

OCZ dropped off the radar shortly into 2013 as it struggled to correct dodgy accounting and stem ongoing losses. Unfortunately, it couldn’t turn things around quickly enough — the one-time legend in memory technology has declared bankruptcy. That isn’t necessarily the end of the story, though. Toshiba has offered to buy all of OCZ’s assets as long as the ailing company maintains its value. The bankruptcy represents a sad (potential) end for a firm that was once synonymous with speedy RAM and SSDs, but there’s a good chance that its work will live on in future products.

Toshiba Regza AT374/28K Is Japan Version Of Excite 7

Toshiba Regza AT374/28K Is Japan Version Of Excite 7Earlier this morning, we brought you word that Toshiba has unleashed their latest 7” Android-powered tablet which comes in the form of the Toshiba Excite 7, where it will sell under that moniker in the US of A. Well, what about the rest of the world, especially when we are talking about the home country of Toshiba itself, Japan? Fret not, folks who live in the Land of the Rising Sun and are on the lookout for a budget oriented tablet – Toshiba also has got your back covered except that this time around it will be the Excite 7’ s equivalent, being known as the Toshiba Regza AT374/28K instead in that part of the world. No prizes for agreeing just which particular model number is easier to spell out!

The Toshiba Regza AT374/28K will come with a rather fast Rockchip RK3188 quad-core processor underneath the hood, where it is accompanied by 1GB RAM and 16GB of internal memory. The 7” display is nothing much to shout about, however, where it sports a 1,024 x 600 resolution count, a 3-megapixel shooter at the back with a VGA camera in front, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice. Your ears will be treated to stereo speakers and SRS audio, while connectivity options include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. I’d get the US version which retails for $170, since after conversion in Japan, it would cost approximately $300.

Toshiba Excite 7 Is Their Latest 7 Inch Android Tablet Retailing For $170

Toshiba unveiled a number of new 10.1 tablets earlier this year with the Excite Pure, Excite Pro and Excite Write and it looks like the company is heading back into the 7-inch tablet market with their newly-announced Excite 7. (more…)

Toshiba gives 7-inch Android tablets another shot with the $170 Excite 7 (hands-on)

    SONY DSC

Back over the summer when Toshiba refreshed its tablet lineup, it appeared that the company was pulling out all the stops: two of its new models had super-sharp 2,560 x 1,600 screens and made use of NVIDIA’s new Tegra 4 chip. At the high end, one even allowed for pen input, thanks to a pressure-sensitive Wacom digitizer. There was, however, at least one glaring omission: there were no smaller-screened tablets in the lineup, and none of them cost less than $300. Well, lest you think Toshiba was giving up on the budget space, it just started selling the Excite 7, a 7-inch Android slate priced at $170.

This is something of a full-circle moment for Toshiba. If you recall, the company’s first 7-inch tablet suffered from cheap build quality and short battery life. Then, Toshiba overcompensated by coming out with the Excite 7.7, which rocked a vibrant AMOLED screen and featured what was then a top-of-the-line Tegra 3 processor. It cost $500, the same as nice 10-inch tablet, and not many people bought it. Now, the company’s back with the Excite 7, and it clearly falls in that first category, if only because the price is so low. Heck, who are we kidding? The specs are low-end, too. For the money, you get 8GB of built-in storage (expandable via microSD), along with a quad-core 1.6GHz Rockchip processor, 1GB of RAM, dual 3MP/0.3MP cameras and a 1,024 x 600 display.
