Apple reportedly hiring new talent to solve iWatch design problems

Apple reportedly hiring new talent to solve iWatch design problems

Rumors, suggestions and trademark applications have been building a case for an wrist-worn Apple product for some time now — an official iWatch to fulfill the wearable potential of the iPod Nano. Now, the Financial Times says the company is “aggressively” hiring to help it get the product ready for release. According to the usual sources familiar with the matter, the new staff might have been sought out to help Apple wrap its head around wearable computing, moving the project to the next stage of development. The timing of the hires might also imply that the iWatch won’t be ready until late next year. Of course, if you can’t wait that long, you can always just make your own.

Intel may launch internet TV service using OnCue name

Intel may launch TV service under OnCue name

Intel has been open with its plans to introduce an internet-based TV service, but many of the details remain up in the air — not the least of which is the name. However, GigaOM has done sleuthing that suggests the offering could be called OnCue. A reported shell company for Intel, Sest, has registered trademarks that include the OnCue title, a logo and a “TV has come to its senses” slogan. Simultaneously, an employee at the marketing agency OMD claims to have worked on the OnCue launch. Intel isn’t commenting on the apparent discoveries, but we wouldn’t count on the trademarks arriving in tandem with a product. When the company is taking a very cautious approach to entering the internet TV field, there’s a chance that the names will be all we ever see.

Apple iWatch trademark war ahead

After filing for a trademark for “iWatch” in several countries, including Japan, Mexico, Russia, Taiwan, and Turkey, Apple may have a bit more trouble filing for the same trademark in other countries such as the US, UK, and China, mostly because “iWatch” has already been trademarked in these countries.

A smartwatch company in the US, known as OMG Electronics, has already trademarked the name, but they ultimately ended up failing when they couldn’t raise the necessary funds on Indiegogo to create an “iWatch.” As for the UK, the trademarked name is used for a monitoring smartphone app (get it?). In China, iWatch trademarks are currently invalid, but “iWatching” isn’t, and if Apple ended up trademarking “iWatch” in China, it could be enough for legal action.

However, it seems Apple shouldn’t have too much of an issue gaining these trademarks in the US and UK, but China will be a bit more difficult to obtain, as Apple has had to some tough times in the past dealing with trademarks in China. For instance, the Chinese company that owned the “iPad” trademark essentially blackmailed Apple into paying more money than originally settled upon.

We’ve been hearing a lot of talk about an upcoming smartwatch from Apple, but not a lot of solid evidence until recently, when Apple filed for the “iWatch” trademark in several countries. We still have to know what to expect in the rumored smartwatch, but it’ll most likely run iOS and do nifty tricks like bring up notifications, and possibly act as a second display of sorts.

In the end, there will indeed be a trademark war between Apple and a few companies who own the “iWatch” trademark, but the Cupertino-based company will most likely come out as the victor if they cough up enough money for the rights to the name. It’ll certainly be interesting to see how it plays out in the next few months.

Samsung GEAR hinted as upcoming smartwatch name in trademark filings

On May 19, Samsung confirmed that it is working on a smartwatch, something it has been doing for quite some time, according to Executive Vice President Lee Young Hee. We’ve seen various mockups and artists renderings of what the smartwatch might look like, but thus far its design is unknown. The name, however, may have just surfaced in a trademark filing: the Samsung GEAR.

The trademark filing was found by the folks at Phandroid, and we’ve had a look through both of them. There’s a large description of the device that talks of software and many terms vague enough to leave the device in question open to interpretation. One of the couple filings, however, go on to specify things like “wrist watch” and “bracelet,” strongly indicating that GEAR is a smartwatch.

Under “Identification”, amidst such keywords as Clocks, Watchbands, and Wristwatches, we see a description talking about “watches that communicate data to personal digital assistants, smart phones, table PCs, PDA, and personal computers through internet websites and other computer and electronic communications networks; watchbands that communicate data to [the same aforementioned devices].”

Back when Mr. Lee confirmed the rumors that Samsung is working on a smartwatch, he said, “We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.” Whether the GEAR will be a companion type of wearable device to complement one’s smartphone, or as a more robust offering, isn’t indicated by the documents.

This comes a day after a patent filing surfaced hinting at a future smartwatch in the work from Qualcomm called TOQ. It is anticipated that the watch will be a vendor-only deal to showcase the company’s hardware rather than a consumer offering, but that is yet to be seen. In following in line with these bits of speculation is a leak that surfaced indicating the the Pebble smartwatch will be sold at Best Buy stores this month.

Apple iWatch trademark spreads: Applications in Russia, Taiwan, Mexico & Turkey

Apple continues to quietly hunt down trademarks for iWatch in multiple markets, with the Japanese filing spotted this weekend followed by similar applications in Russia, Taiwan, Mexico, and Turkey. Apple files application for ‘iWatch’ trademark in Japan

Apple files application to register 'iWatch' trademark in Japan

Evidence is mounting that Apple might out a smartwatch in the near future after Yahoo Japan noticed that the company applied for the “iWatch” trademark in Japan on June 3rd. Our Japanese editor noticed that several other companies have applied for that term as well, though this one (released on June 27th) is from Apple Inc. of Cupertino. That follows a patent application from Apple we saw earlier in the year for a watch-like AMOLED device that proposed a slap bracelet, kinetic energy charger and “end-detection” user sensor, among other features. In addition, other rumors from Bloomberg back in February suggested that 100 Apple employees were working on a smartwatch of some kind. If we don’t see a device after all that, Cupertino’s gone to a heck of a lot of trouble for nothing. Check after the break for a screen grab (in Japanese) of the trademark application.
