Virgin SpaceShip Two Achieves New Height Record

Virgin SpaceShip Two Achieves New Height RecordVirgin’s SpaceShip Two has broken its fair share of records in the past, but this does not mean that the spacecraft is unable to shatter even more records right here, right now. No sir, the Virgin SpaceShip Two reusable space vehicle has managed to touch new heights today, where the craft was blasted nearly 13.5 miles into the air where it touched a speed of Mach 1.4, now how about that.

The Virgin SpaceShip Two took off from the Mojave Air and Space Port at approximately 7:22 a.m. PST as it was strapped to the WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft, where the latter brought the former to approximately 46,000 feet. Virgin Galactic Pilot Mike Masucci and Scaled Test Pilot Mike Alsbury were at the controls, and this particular test leads the SpaceShip Two one step closer to its ultimate goal as Sir Richard Branson put it succinctly, “’2014 will be the year we will finally put our beautiful spaceship in her natural environment of space. Today, we had our own Chief Pilot flying another flawless supersonic flight and proving the various systems required to take us safely to space, as well as providing the very best experience while we’re up there.”

When WhiteKnightTwo dropped the plane, the SpaceShip Two then relied on its own rocket motor in order roar to 71,000 feet high, setting a new record along the way.

Ford Hybrid Semi-Solar Vehicle Could Usher In A New Era Of Green Rides

Ford Hybrid Semi Solar Vehicle Could Usher In A New Era Of Green RidesThe idea of a green vehicle has definitely gained traction. After all, fossil fuels are finite in terms of its availability, and it is wise to start paying attention to renewable fuel and energy sources to keep the constantly growing automotive industry moving along in the right direction. Ford has taken a look at hybrid cars, and they intend to work on a hybrid sei-solar vehicle that will be able to run partly on sunlight, which is a good thing. After all, the sun still rises in the east and sets in the west every single day, right? At least for most of us, unless you live in some faraway place that gives you half a year of sunlight and another half a year of darkness. What you see above is not what Ford has in mind on our roads, but it is just there for illustrative purposes. Ford’s focus on the concept would be based on the C-Max platform known as the Solar Energi.

C-Max happens to be a compact which has already been constructed with special regard to gas mileage, where the photovoltaic panels that line the car’s roof are capable of giving up to 34 kilometers of range on pure electric power alone, and it can hit a whopping 1,000 kilometers based on electric-assisted gas power. Of course, we have no idea on how long the charge time is at the moment, so hopefully details will be ironed out in due time.

Electric Buses Charged Wirelessly, Set To Begin Service

Electric Buses Charged Wirelessly, Set To Begin ServiceWireless charging is a topic that we have covered from time to time, even as recently as earlier this evening. Here we are with word from developers of electric buses that are about to begin service will also be able to enjoy wireless charging capability. This new fleet of electric buses will comprise of 8 vehicles in total, where they will be operating along a busy route in Milton Keynes from late January onward. These buses have the ability to run for a longer period of time thanks to a wireless booster charge that they will receive right at the beginning as well as at the end of the route, thanks to plates which are embedded in the road itself, making such buses the first of their kind in the UK to enter service.

The inductive charging capable fleet will run on the Number 7 route, where it will cover the length of 25km (15 miles) between the Milton Keynes suburbs of Wolverton and Bletchley, and it has been estimated to carry around 800,000 passengers annually. A full night’s worth of charging at the depot should be able to let it go to “work” with vigor, and being on the receiving end of the booster charges throughout the entire working day.

Audi Demonstrates Qi Wireless Charging At CES 2014

Audi Demonstrates Qi Wireless Charging At CES 2014[CES 2014] At every edition of CES, you can be sure that there will also be an area that showcases vehicles as well as the different kinds of technology that has been incorporated within, or in this particular case of the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), from without. We are referring to how German automaker Audi has been demonstrating Qi wireless charging capability at this year’s edition of CES.

This would place Audi alongside the ranks of Daimler, Toyota, Jeep and others who have already incorporated Qi wireless charging capability in current and future car models. Needless to say, cars are but a natural fit for wireless charging, so to have Qi wireless charging capability just about everywhere the consumer needs it makes perfect sense. The Audi phone box that debuted in 2012 has been refreshed to include Qi wireless charging capability, where the electricity in the floor of the phone box will flow to a receiver coil in the smartphone via induction. Future versions will see the very same Audi phone box provide perfect cell reception, in addition to making sure that a user’s smartphone will remain fully charged all the time. Apart from that, Audi makes use of the WLAN hotspot in the car so that it can combine the world of smartphones and tablets with the automotive world in an intelligent manner. [Press Release]

How the Downtown Project Is Solving Vegas' Urban Problems In-House

When I meet Josh Westerholt at the offices of Project 100, the Las Vegas urban mobility startup that’s funded by the Downtown Project, we decide it would probably make sense to head out into downtown Vegas to tour their project area in person. From the other room, his co-worker has an even better idea: "Take the Tesla."

InMotion SCV Hands On: A Cheaper, Lighter Segway That’s a Lot of Fun

If you’ve ever been to a touristy locale, you’ve likely seen flocks of tourists riding Segways—the electric, two-wheeled, lean-steered, (dorky) personal transporters. There are two major problems with them, though: They’re very expensive, and they’re very heavy. But a small company called Inmotion may have just solved those problems. I got to zip around the sidewalk outside this year’s CES on one of InMotion’s SCVs, and I had way more fun than I should have.

BMW Self-Driving Car “Drifts” Around Bends

BMW Self Driving Car “Drifts” Around Bends[CES 2014] When it comes to self-driving cars, the technology in that particular department has grown by leaps and bounds over the years. BMW, the company that churns out the “ultimate driving machine” for many years now, has showcased their very own self-driving car which is capable of performing a “drift” around bends as well as slalom between cones. This is an important development, since to drift is not an easy thing to do even for an experienced driver. The self-driving cars from BMW happen to come in the form of the modified 2-Series Coupe and 6-Series Gran Coupe, where they can move fast enough to hurtle round a racetrack while take full control a power slide – all in an automatic manner without the need for any kind of driver intervention.

Magic is not used here, but rather, good old fashioned technology, where we will find the incorporation of a 360-degree radar, ultrasonic sensors and cameras, allowing the cars to sense and adapt to their surroundings. If you are interested to see such autonomous driving technology, you might want to drop by CES 2014 and check it out. They aren’t the only ones to experiment with such technology, as Japan’s Toyota has also been showcasing their very own autonomous car on the CES showfloor.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally Debunks Rumors Of Being Next Microsoft Boss

Ford CEO Alan Mulally Debunks Rumors Of Being Next Microsoft BossA good rumor never dies, or so it seems. In fact, it does sound as though we are looking at a deja vu situation here, as Ford CEO Alan Mulally has shot down rumors which are making their way around news circles that he is being lined up to be the next person in charge of Microsoft. Mulally has informed the Associated Press yesterday, saying, “I have no other plans to do anything other than serve Ford,” and will remain with the motor giant at least until the end of this year.

In the past, the many reports concerning Mulally’s “imminent departure” have proven to be an unwelcome distraction for the motor giant Ford. Good thing it has not affected the price of Ford’s shares negatively in the past, since we have seen the prices of these shares more than double ever since Mulally hooked up with Ford all the way back in 2006. Something tells us that this will not be the last time we will hear of Alan Mulally joining forces with Microsoft right at the very top, since as late as October last year, we have heard Mulally issuing a similar negative response to such baseless rumors. Why do you think that this rumor has such a long shelf life?
