IFA 2013 Wrap-Up

IFA 2013 has come and gone, and with the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch, various super-sized (and often curved) TVs, and a number of superlative-toting smartphones, there was no shortage of geek appeal. As ever, the Berlin tech show saw a few key themes surface, and while not everybody is necessarily ready to snap a cellphone […]

LG sports a new 77-Inch Ultra HD curved OLED TV to wow the masses

lg-ultra-hd-oled-curveJust how much larger do you think that TVs in the living room will get eventually that having a projector around is redundant just for screen size alone? We are not quite sure where the glass ceiling is set in terms of measurements, but one thing is for sure – LG has just edged closer to a new record. In fact, their latest offering comes in the form of a 77” Ultra HD curved OLED TV that might just set the tone for the next-generation TV market. You might get a sense of deja vu out of reading this, but that is because the South Korean consumer electronics giant rolled out a 55” curved OLED TV earlier this year at CES, leaving this 77” monster to debut at IFA 2013 instead.

Havis Kwon, president and CEO of LG Home Entertainment Company, shared,“LG was proud to be the first company to commercially launch an OLED TV and we are once again setting our sights high with the ULTRA HD CURVED OLED TV. This 77-inch TV is proof that we will never stop pushing the boundaries and exploring new possibilities.”

Needless to say, this bad boy from LG would clearly make it the largest OLED TV in the world at the moment, not to mention being the new flagship from LG at the moment, boasting some of the most advanced next-generation TV features in a single chassis. It measures a whopping 77” diagonally, where the large screen’s IMAX-like curvature would ensure that you, the viewer, has a field of vision which is filled more completely compared to a conventional flat-screen TV.

Not only that, it will also merge with LG’s exceptional WRGB OLED and ULTRA HD technology, which would let it deliver infinite contrast ratio and resolution that amounts up to four times greater compared to regular Full HD. No idea on pricing, but chances are pretty high you have got to pay for this through your nose – and more!

Samsung brings its first OLED 4K TV to IFA, we go eyes-on

Samsung brings its first OLED 4K TV to IFA, we go eyes-on

Sony outed the very first 4K OLED television at CES last January, and now Samsung is catching up with its very own. We swooped by the firm’s slice of show floor at IFA to lay eyes on its latest TV, and walked away quite impressed. The 55-inch Ultra HD set packs a powerful visual punch, delivering sharp visuals and incredibly vivid colors. So vivid, in fact, we were suspicious that the sample footage was HDR video — it may very well be, but that doesn’t take away from the hardware’s color reproduction prowess. Big blue’s panel far and away outpaces non-OLED 4K displays when it comes to bright and lively color. Viewing angles on the screen are remarkable too, as glancing at the screen just a few degrees askance won’t blur or mute picture quality. As for form factor, Samsung’s set is contained into a sleek and extremely thin shell. No pricing or release window is on the docket, but you can check out the gallery below to ogle at the TV for yourself.%Gallery-slideshow83288%

LG 77-inch Ultra HD Curved OLED eyes-on

Big, curved, and OLED: every year there are some keywords IFA’s prime competitors cling to, and in 2013 LG is leading the pack with its whopping 77-inch Ultra HD Curved OLED TV. Full 4k resolution spread across a near-painfully bright, sweeping pane of OLED technology; does the world need a set so big, so detailed, […]

Philips Elevation Ambilight+Hue TV eyes-on

Given Philips’ addiction to LED lighting on both its Ambilight TVs and its hue wireless lightbulbs, it’s a surprise it took the company so long to cook up the Ambilight+hue system in the new Elevation TV. Announced back in July, the 60-inch Elevation builds on the existing Ambilight system by hooking in the rest of […]

Simple.TV reveals second-gen streaming DVR and Version 2.0 interface

SimpleTV preps secondgen streaming DVR with international tuning, sleeker design

Simple.TV’s first streaming DVR had its rough edges, but the company is clearly willing to make improvements — it just announced the second generation of its set-top box. The redesign is more flexible, sporting both a second tuner and compatibility with international broadcast standards like DVB-C, DVB-S2, DVB-T2 and ISDB-T. Both first- and second-generation owners will also get a revamped Version 2.0 interface that offers personalized content, faster updates and new streaming clients for Android, iOS, Roku players and the web. Simple.TV doesn’t yet have pricing for the new DVR, but it tells us that both the device and the Version 2.0 upgrade will reach the US by mid-to-late November; Europeans will get the hardware next spring.

Haier’s new OLED TV is harder to push over than most

Haier shows off an OLED TV with a builtin stand at IFA

Eye control is all well and good, but what Haier was really pumped about at this year’s IFA was its new 55-inch OLED set. And, granted, the set is nice and thin at four millimeters, with a 1.5 millimeter bezel. What the company was really excited about, however, was the built-in stand. Yep, it’s a four millimeter thick TV that can stand on its own, making it really difficult to push over in one direction, at least. We appreciate the sentiment, but we’ll be more excited when we can start controlling the thing with our brains.

Haier shows off its latest eye-controlled TV at IFA, we go eyes-on, naturally

Haier shows off its latest eye-controlled TV at IFA, we go eyes-on, naturally

Let’s face it, it wouldn’t be a proper IFA if we didn’t take some time out of our busy schedules to pop by Haier’s booth for a little alternative TV action. In past years, we’ve seen gesture and mind control, transparent sets and, of course eye-control. The company’s tweaked the latter a bit, hitting this year’s show with the latest prototype. Asked if we’d actually see the set in our lifetimes, the Haier rep we spoke with assured us that the company would have something “soon,” so take that as you will. So, what are the changes from last year? For starters, the set is slimmer. More importantly, it’s got a new sensor from Tobii, which promises sharper eye detection.

We’ve got to say though, as ever, it takes some getting used to. After calibrating, you move you eyes to different parts of the screen to engage different functions — like, say, top for menu and bottom for volume. When your eyes drift up there, a menu will pop up. In the case of volume, you move your gaze (and the cursor in turn) to volume up and blink to select. Why this is better than a good old fashioned remote, we’re still not sure — particularly when moving your head can throw the whole thing off. But we’ve lost our remotes enough times to seriously consider giving it a shot.%Gallery-slideshow79671%
